Grindr is not a cure for coronavirus anxiety

In moments of great anxiety, it is not uncommon for me to embark on late-night Grindr sessions. My fraught relationship with the ubiquitous gay dating app goes back several years, and doesn’t include a whole lot of actual dates, frankly. The endless grid of headless torsos and explicit usernames usually don’t want dates; they want “pics.” The whole exhausting experience often concludes with me staying up way too late on a weeknight, and uninstalling the app in shame.

But I keep coming back, addicted to the slot machine-like feel of the app, which LGBT researcher Jack Turban defines as the psychological concept of variable ratio enforcement. In his 2018 piece for Vox examining Grindr’s impact on the mental health of gay men, Turban says Grindr awards its users for clicking at unpredictable levels, and that’s one of the most effective ways to reinforce human behavior. In other words, Grindr works like a slot machine: once in a while you score, but more often, you fail — sending endless inquiries into the digital abyss.

Like many people, I have struggled with my mental wellbeing during the coronavirus pandemic. In a recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation, nearly half of Americans said the crisis has negatively impacted their mental health. Early on, I attempted to cure my quarantine despair with Grindr, despite the obvious futility of the endeavor. While I had no intentions of actually meeting up with strangers in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, I still logged onto the app religiously, looking for an escape from my loneliness. Of course, being unable to actually meet up with anybody only increased my feeling of isolation, worsening the vicious cycle.

Baltimore turns to aerial surveillance as homicides continue

Starting Friday, the roughly 600,000 people living in Baltimore will be constantly recorded whenever they step out under the open sky.

Marvin L. Cheatham Sr., for one, knows he could be watched as he goes to a doctor’s appointment or visits friends. He’ll be spied upon in his back yard, and as he steps into his car, and when he drives around the city, his entire trip will be recorded, too.

All his movements will be captured, and he’s OK with this — even though police will have no search warrant, and the overwhelming majority of Baltimore’s citizens will have committed no crimes — because the city is so besieged by violence.

“I am so upset and angry about all these people that have died, I’m willing to give up some of my rights, as bad as that sounds, and I’m a staunch civil rights person,” said Cheatham, who led his local NAACP chapter in the 1990s. “I had 19 homicides two years ago in my neighborhood.”

Teen with lesbian moms forced to listen to anti-LGBTQ “sermons” before school basketball practice

In a lawsuit filed earlier this month, two mothers in Tennessee allege that their son’s middle school basketball coach forced kids to attend his sermons in order to stay on the team.

The lawsuit, filed by the mothers who identified themselves only as “K.K.” and “K.K.,” says that their son signed up for the school’s basketball team, but no one told him that he would have to participate in any religious instruction to be on the team.

But Coach Chuck Comer then allegedly told the students that participating in a “Teens for Christ” program was a requirement for the team. Specifically, students had to show up 30 minutes before practice in the morning on Tuesdays and Thursdays to listen to Comer “read from and interpret the Bible for approximately 30 minutes.”

Even worse, the son went to one of the sermons, which was allegedly about LGBTQ people and “sin.” The teen was forced to endure “harassment on the basis of his parents’ sexual orientation” to be on the team, the lawsuit states.

Backlash against LGBT+ rights sees hate and neo-Nazis rise across Europe

Anti-LGBT+ hate speech and physical attacks are rising across Europe – including in Spain, Finland and the UK.

That’s according to international LGBT+ rights organisation ILGA-Europe as they publish their annual report today.

In particular they highlight a rise in the number of neo-Nazis on the fringe of Pride events. And they point to Chechnya where LGBT+ people were again detained without trial in concentration camps. They also say hate attacks against LGBT+ people have risen in Britain since Brexit.

Evelyne Paradis, executive director of ILGA-Europe, said the report dispelled the myth that the community was only making progress.

She said: ‘It is not all bad news. The issue of bodily integrity for intersex people continues to gain more prominence on the political agenda of governments and institutions.

‘2019 was a year of positive developments for rainbow families in the region, with an expansion of family rights in a few countries. And important advancements continue to be made on reforming or establishing legal gender recognition procedures, even if in many countries progress is slowing down.

‘However, the lived reality of LGBTI people in many parts of Europe and Central Asia is increasingly difficult and for a large part remains invisible, even to organisations like ILGA-Europe. Action is needed.’

More than a third of millennials share Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's worry about having kids while the threat of climate change looms

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made headlines last week when she suggested that some young Americans are concerned about having children because of the threat that climate change could pose to future generations.

"Our planet is going to hit disaster if we don't turn this ship around ... there's scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult," Ocasio-Cortez said on Instagram Live. "And even if you don't have kids, there are still children here in the world, and we have a moral obligation to leave a better world for them."

The 29-year-old New York progressive went on to say young people are grappling with the question: "Is it OK to still have children?"

#MeToo firestorm consumes Bollywood and Indian media

India's #MeToo movement arrived in a cascade of allegations as women took to Twitter to call out comedians, journalists, authors, actors and filmmakers - in the process, they have sparked a debate about consent and complicity.

Unlike its American counterpart, it has not been spurred by investigative journalism. Rather, it has been a spontaneous outpouring in the last few days, amplified by journalists themselves. And it has hit Indian media the hardest.

Veteran actor Alok Nath is the latest to be named for an alleged sexual assault nearly 20 years ago. His accuser, the director of a television show starring Nath, recounted the alleged incident in a Facebook post that has since gone viral.
