Man caught on video hurling racist comments at Lyft driver fired from job

The man who was caught on video hurling racist comments at a Lyft driver in Washington state has been fired from his job, his ex-employer said.

Video of the Tuesday night encounter in Issaquah shows the man identified as “Joe” lashing out at driver David Kangogo after he told him to put his mask back on.

“What’s a sandn—–r? Do you know what a sandn—–r is?” the man asked Kangogo outside of the car. “‘Cuz I do.”

Woman attacked after argument over face masks in NYC subway station

A 60-year-old woman was assaulted by two suspects at a Brooklyn subway station last Friday after she told the pair to wear face masks, police said.

The beatdown occurred just outside an elevator at the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center subway station at about 12:20 p.m., cops said.

Before entering the elevator, the victim told the assailants — a man and a woman — that they could not ride with her unless they used face coverings, authorities said.

Monuments to Black lives have no value without justice and meaningful change

It seems like performative activism is here to stay. America seems just fine with white people, corporations and other organizations simply saying "Black Lives Matter" and doing nothing more. In fact, in the months since I first said I was tired of performative bullshit, it's gotten worse. The COVID-19 pandemic is still raging, even though Americans have decided it's over. Jared Kushner thinks that Black people need to want to be successful to survive – and the presidential election has shown us that America's inherent racism is alive and well. We have a white supremacist majority in the Supreme Court that threatens to dismantle what's left of democracy, and a new justice with a highly-questionable résumé that a Black woman would be sent home immediately for even producing. And the response? Though it was nice to have people from all walks of life join us at protests, white folks still appear to be marching themselves into the abyss months later.

A few of us thought this moment might be different because we were hanging onto a thread of hope that white people might actually get themselves together and make real change. But alas, here we are … I'm still tired.

Fox Anchor Pauses Mid-Segment Over ‘Very Disturbing’ Sign at MAGA Rally

A Fox News anchor briefly paused mid-segment on Saturday after a sign carried by a demonstrator at the so-called “Million MAGA March” in Washington, D.C. appeared on the screen bearing a racist threat. Fox anchor Eric Shawn broke from his conversation with a Republican strategist to say, “We’ve just seen a very disturbing sign. It said, ‘Coming for Blacks and Indians first welcome to the New World Order.’ Who the hell knows, you know, what people have and what they say on these things?” The march, intended to show support for President Donald Trump and his false claims that he won the presidential election, drew a significantly smaller crowd than a million people, with attendees numbering in the thousands.

Needlessly Sexy Statue Stirs Massive Row

The British have erected a statue to “mother of feminism” Mary Wollstonecraft in north London, and it is unexpectedly sexy? Rather than depicting Wollstonecraft herself, artist Maggi Hambling instead gave the world a silver lady to embody all the ladies, nude and toned and shapely. These choices have polarized the statue’s public, some of whom have wondered, Where are the “Everywoman’s” clothes? Why does she have the flat abs of a fitness influencer and a spherical topiary bush? Is this historically accurate? What is the point?

(Fuck You Daddy) Bill Maher: ‘Let’s not have a civil war with the Trumpets’

Maher mocked “rich celebrities” who threaten to leave the country but never do and said that citizens who want to divide the country into red and blue states should “shut the fuck up.”

“Take it from someone who has traveled this country my whole life: There are no red states or blue states. They’re all like Mitch McConnell’s hands — some shade of purple,” Maher said.

Maher called out Democrats for mostly staying silent despite months of civil unrest and looting this past summer.

“Have we lost our minds?!? Stealing? BAD!” Maher shouted. “No looting the mall and also no Gucci-loafered Republican looters ransacking our government because I know what you’re thinking, Don.

“You lose the election and everything must go! We lost our lease, going out of business!

“Oh yes, you’ll be selling pardons on Craigslist. Jared will turn the Smithsonian into condos.

The Church’s Black Exodus

Across the country, Black Americans feel under siege from the coronavirus pandemic and raw from the police brutality fueling Black Lives Matter protests. But some are nursing another intimate wound: their church’s failure to acknowledge their pain. Many Black parishioners, especially those at multiracial institutions, bristle when they hear rhetoric from church leaders that ignores how health inequities and racism are affecting the Black community right now. Others are hurt by their church’s conspicuous silence on these issues. The result is a quiet but resolute contingent of Black church members leaving their congregation to seek spiritual healing elsewhere.

Like others I talked with, Delisha, 58, isn’t one to miss church. For the past seven years, she has made sure to be in the faithful number of a large, multicultural New Orleans congregation. But after the pandemic hit in March, she decided to attend services only via live-stream. Black people like her are disproportionately at risk for severe illness or death from COVID-19, and Delisha, who lives with her elderly mother and a daughter with asthma, has hypertension. (Delisha asked that I identify her using only her middle name, because she had not yet contacted the church about her concerns.)

What she saw on video one Sunday dismayed her. As the camera panned over the congregation, she noted that some people had masks on and some didn’t. The church did not require them. What’s more, the pastor, who is white, scolded the missing members over live-stream: “Why are y’all not here today? You scared?”

YouTuber Landon Clifford, 19, was 'addicted to prescription drugs after falling into depression and hanged himself in the garage after telling wife Camryn he was going for a bath'

Camryn went out with a friend and when she got home they had dinner and went through their typical night time routine, but she could tell something was wrong with Landon.

'He said that he was sorry for everything he put me through. It was really hard on me when I was pregnant and he was heavy in his addiction and he really just wasn’t himself at that time. He was just apologizing to me for everything. I could tell he was putting a lot of blame on himself,' Camryn said.

'I told him that I loved him and that I forgave him and things are different now and we’re on a new path. I gave him a hug and a kiss and told him that I love him and that it’s okay,' she added.

Landon said he was going to take a bath, which he does every night before bed.

About 30 minutes later she started to hear her first daughter Collette start to wake up and fuss.

Concerned Camryn went to the bathroom to check on Landon and found it empty, the bathtub apparently unused.

'I'm leaving, you guys won': Moment furious Seattle cop tells activist he's quitting because of constant unrest caused by BLM protests - just days after city's Chief of Police resigned over huge budget cut

The two men continue to exchange false pleasantries. When asked how he feels about stepping down, the officer says, ‘I’m feeling great. I’m stepping down from this department. You guys won.’

The officer is asked if he is stepping down because of police brutality, to which the officer says he isn’t, rather he’s handing in his badge because he’s tried of dealing with Black Lives Matter protesters.

Their dialogue is momentarily interrupted when the officer becomes embroiled in a heated exchange of words with another protester who is out of frame.

Riots, Not Protests: The Media Is Gaslighting You / Opinion

Bad-faith media members tell you civil unrest in American cities are really peaceful protests. And when they do actually acknowledge violence, some media frame it as a direct result of President Donald Trump.

You are being lied to. It's an audacious attempt to gaslight the American public, as some media continue their effort to help defeat President Trump.

The Pacific Northwest is under siege. Nightly, riots overtake Portland. In Seattle, there were three costly and dangerous riots over the course of just a week. People are getting injured, and both businesses and public buildings are being destroyed or vandalized. And the media is pretending it's not really happening.

I've covered the demonstrations and they're anything but peaceful. But you don't have to be in Seattle or Portland to understand what's going on. A casual Twitter search yields video after video after video after video of the violence.

So why are we being told the violence isn't happening? It's part of a strategic campaign to push back against Trump's re-election.

Widow condemns "barbaric" death of driver beaten over masks

The wife of a French bus driver who was beaten to death after he asked four passengers to wear face masks aboard his vehicle called Saturday for “exemplary punishment” for his killers.

The assault on Philippe Monguillot has scandalized France. President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday dispatched the interior minister to meet the driver's widow after his death was announced Friday. He had been hospitalized in critical condition after the July 5 attack.

Veronique Monguillot said she told the minister, Gerald Darmanin, that she and their three daughters were “destroyed” by the attack on her husband at a bus stop in Bayonne, southwest France.

“We must bang a fist on the table, so this never happens again,” she said. “It's barbaric, not normal. We must stop this massacre."

Potential Joe Biden running mate mayor tells Black Lives Matter 'enough is enough' after eight-year-old girl was shot dead as her mom drove through barricade where Rayshard Brooks was killed

'We have talked about this movement that is happening across America at this moment in time when we have the ears and the interest of people across this country and across this globe who are saying they want to see change,' said Bottoms.

'We're fighting the enemy within when we are shooting each other up in our streets. You shot and killed a baby. And it wasn't one shooter, there was at least two shooters.'

Bottoms also noted that the latest shooting, as well as others that occurred in a 24-hour span, were not the work of local police officers.

'The reality is this, these aren’t police officers shooting people on the streets of Atlanta,' she said.

'These are members of the community shooting each other – and in this case, it is the worst possible outcome.'

Nobody Wants to See Your Cringey Fourth of July Celebrations

Here’s the thing: Now, more than ever, nobody wants to watch a 30-part Instagram story about a summer getaway. Life is absolutely, actively not good right now for any American with a sliver of a conscience or even a hint of financial instability. While it’s hard to begrudge anyone their coping mechanisms in this moment, it’s a good time to reflect on the rote patriotism that circulates every year on the dot. Proud to be an American? In this economy? With this rate of COVID-19 resurgence? Maybe not.

Right now, celebratory Fourth of July content is the normie equivalent of Kim Kardashian’s tweet about her daughter’s new fleet of sleek, black fairytale horses.

It’s tone deaf, it’s tacky, it’s like, where’d you even get 14 horses right now—except the 14 horses are a stand-in for the audacity to plan and publicize the fact you’re on a group vacation in the middle of a pandemic.

Ask Not for Whom the Mob Brays / Opinion

Amid the current season of activism, young people have enthusiastically taken both to the streets and the internet, participating in the national discussion over race relations in America.

The New York Times recently reported about a new front in what feels increasingly like a political war: high schoolers creating social media accounts to call out classmates for alleged "racist" speech. Students post screenshots of comments, videos and posts they deem to be hateful, identify the authors through crowdsourcing, and then mercilessly "cancel" them online—sometimes with assistance from social media personalities with millions of followers. Obviously, no effort is made to examine context, understand the commenter's mindset or offer an alternative point of view; the point, after all, is to ruin someone's life for an indiscretion.
