Riots, Not Protests: The Media Is Gaslighting You / Opinion
Bad-faith media members tell you civil unrest in American cities are really peaceful protests. And when they do actually acknowledge violence, some media frame it as a direct result of President Donald Trump.
You are being lied to. It's an audacious attempt to gaslight the American public, as some media continue their effort to help defeat President Trump.
The Pacific Northwest is under siege. Nightly, riots overtake Portland. In Seattle, there were three costly and dangerous riots over the course of just a week. People are getting injured, and both businesses and public buildings are being destroyed or vandalized. And the media is pretending it's not really happening.
I've covered the demonstrations and they're anything but peaceful. But you don't have to be in Seattle or Portland to understand what's going on. A casual Twitter search yields video after video after video after video of the violence.
So why are we being told the violence isn't happening? It's part of a strategic campaign to push back against Trump's re-election.
Widow condemns "barbaric" death of driver beaten over masks
The wife of a French bus driver who was beaten to death after he asked four passengers to wear face masks aboard his vehicle called Saturday for “exemplary punishment” for his killers.
The assault on Philippe Monguillot has scandalized France. President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday dispatched the interior minister to meet the driver's widow after his death was announced Friday. He had been hospitalized in critical condition after the July 5 attack.
Veronique Monguillot said she told the minister, Gerald Darmanin, that she and their three daughters were “destroyed” by the attack on her husband at a bus stop in Bayonne, southwest France.
“We must bang a fist on the table, so this never happens again,” she said. “It's barbaric, not normal. We must stop this massacre."

'We have talked about this movement that is happening across America at this moment in time when we have the ears and the interest of people across this country and across this globe who are saying they want to see change,' said Bottoms.
'We're fighting the enemy within when we are shooting each other up in our streets. You shot and killed a baby. And it wasn't one shooter, there was at least two shooters.'
Bottoms also noted that the latest shooting, as well as others that occurred in a 24-hour span, were not the work of local police officers.
'The reality is this, these aren’t police officers shooting people on the streets of Atlanta,' she said.
'These are members of the community shooting each other – and in this case, it is the worst possible outcome.'
Nobody Wants to See Your Cringey Fourth of July Celebrations
Here’s the thing: Now, more than ever, nobody wants to watch a 30-part Instagram story about a summer getaway. Life is absolutely, actively not good right now for any American with a sliver of a conscience or even a hint of financial instability. While it’s hard to begrudge anyone their coping mechanisms in this moment, it’s a good time to reflect on the rote patriotism that circulates every year on the dot. Proud to be an American? In this economy? With this rate of COVID-19 resurgence? Maybe not.
Right now, celebratory Fourth of July content is the normie equivalent of Kim Kardashian’s tweet about her daughter’s new fleet of sleek, black fairytale horses.
It’s tone deaf, it’s tacky, it’s like, where’d you even get 14 horses right now—except the 14 horses are a stand-in for the audacity to plan and publicize the fact you’re on a group vacation in the middle of a pandemic.
Ask Not for Whom the Mob Brays / Opinion
Amid the current season of activism, young people have enthusiastically taken both to the streets and the internet, participating in the national discussion over race relations in America.
The New York Times recently reported about a new front in what feels increasingly like a political war: high schoolers creating social media accounts to call out classmates for alleged "racist" speech. Students post screenshots of comments, videos and posts they deem to be hateful, identify the authors through crowdsourcing, and then mercilessly "cancel" them online—sometimes with assistance from social media personalities with millions of followers. Obviously, no effort is made to examine context, understand the commenter's mindset or offer an alternative point of view; the point, after all, is to ruin someone's life for an indiscretion.

Not even “The Golden Girls” are immune to blackface backlash.
“Mixed Blessings,” a 1988 episode of the beloved comedy series, has been yanked off the content-streaming platform Hulu for its depiction of two white characters sporting darkened faces, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The episode features Michael (Scott Jacoby), the son of Bea Arthur’s Dorothy character, planning to wed African-American fiancée Lorraine (Rosalind Cash), who’s twice his age.
While Dorothy is anxious over the extreme age difference, Lorraine’s family disapproves of her marrying a white man. The two families then scheme to sabotage the couple’s engagement.

Grindr is not a cure for coronavirus anxiety
In moments of great anxiety, it is not uncommon for me to embark on late-night Grindr sessions. My fraught relationship with the ubiquitous gay dating app goes back several years, and doesn’t include a whole lot of actual dates, frankly. The endless grid of headless torsos and explicit usernames usually don’t want dates; they want “pics.” The whole exhausting experience often concludes with me staying up way too late on a weeknight, and uninstalling the app in shame.
But I keep coming back, addicted to the slot machine-like feel of the app, which LGBT researcher Jack Turban defines as the psychological concept of variable ratio enforcement. In his 2018 piece for Vox examining Grindr’s impact on the mental health of gay men, Turban says Grindr awards its users for clicking at unpredictable levels, and that’s one of the most effective ways to reinforce human behavior. In other words, Grindr works like a slot machine: once in a while you score, but more often, you fail — sending endless inquiries into the digital abyss.
Like many people, I have struggled with my mental wellbeing during the coronavirus pandemic. In a recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation, nearly half of Americans said the crisis has negatively impacted their mental health. Early on, I attempted to cure my quarantine despair with Grindr, despite the obvious futility of the endeavor. While I had no intentions of actually meeting up with strangers in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, I still logged onto the app religiously, looking for an escape from my loneliness. Of course, being unable to actually meet up with anybody only increased my feeling of isolation, worsening the vicious cycle.
