Why Are More Indians Signing 'Suicide Pacts'? We Asked an Expert.

In 2016, the World Health Organization reported that India has the highest suicide rate in the South East Asia region. The latest official data recorded a spike in suicides in 2019 as compared to 2018, witnessing 381 suicides a day. Suicide pacts, however, have been a recurring pattern over the years. In fact, in 2015, experts noted that suicide pacts are on the rise. The year 2019 recorded 72 cases of mass/family suicides, according to official data.

Now and then, India is confronted with an ongoing mental health crisis. A few months ago, the discussion resurfaced when a top Bollywood actor allegedly died by suicide in his apartment. However, mental health discourse in India remains inaccessible to a large part of the population and often struggles with acceptance and stigma.

Sex trafficking ring of 178 people are arrested in Florida for trafficking ONE teenage girl who was 13 when the abuse began

Nearly 200 people have been arrested in a shocking child sex trafficking case centered on one teenage girl whose own mother allegedly sold her for sex or drugs in Florida.

Officials say the victim was 13 and 14 when most of the alleged offenses occurred but the abuse may have started before her 13th birthday.

Overall 106 people face felony charges including human trafficking and lewd and lascivious battery on a child under 16, and 18 of those are being charged federally. Meanwhile, 72 face misdemeanor charges, including solicitation of prostitution, and notices to appear.

Some of the people linked to the case include a grade school physical education teacher and a high-profile booster for Florida State University, as per the Tallahassee Democrat.

'The sheer number. The all-day, everyday, all-the-time solicitation and sexual activity and talk about cash for money and clearly meeting. I had never seen something just that prolific,' Tallahassee Police Department Investigator Elizabeth Bascom, who first uncovered the victim being sold online, said.

'When you can go online and order a pizza and a girl at the same time, and the girl shows up to your door before the pizza, our society is in trouble. OK, that’s where we are. It is unbelievably accessible,' she said, calling the abuse 'horrific'.

A study examined the death certificates of LGBTQ teen suicide victims. This is what they found.

LGBTQ youth who die by suicide are more likely to have been bullied, according to a new study published in JAMA Pediatrics.

LGBTQ youth are both more likely to be bullied and more likely to report suicidal thoughts and behaviors than cisgender, heterosexual youth. A team of researchers set out to determine if the two high rates are related.

The researchers examined death records for teens from 2003 to 2017, examining both the coroner’s or medical examiner’s report and police reports about the suicides. Since the records don’t always say how a decedent identified, the researchers looked for keywords describing how their families saw them, if they had a same-sex boyfriend or girlfriend, or if they were taking steps toward a transition.

Overall, they counted around 3% of the nearly 10,000 suicide records they had access to as LGBTQ. The researchers note that this is probably an undercount – there may have been LGBTQ youth whose death certificates and police reports didn’t mention their gender identity or sexual orientation in any way.

Gay teen writes emotional letter to parents who won't accept him

A gay teen from Nanuet, New York, has written a heart-breaking letter to his parents who wouldn’t accept him for being who he is.

Kent Mendez, 19, tweeted a photo of the letter, in both English and Spanish, on 8 July in an act that has the entire social media website collectively crying.

In the devastating letter, Mendez explained that, with LGBTI youth rejected by their parents being more likely to consider taking their own live, he refused to ‘become another statistic.’

What happened?
Mendez left it all behind on Sunday morning. The bedroom he had lived in for years. His dog, Valentino.

But in the letter he left behind for his mother and father, he explained that while the decision was difficult, the life he had led was even more so.

‘There hasn’t been a day where I haven’t cried or struggled to find the energy to get out of bed,’ he wrote.

‘I feel trapped and manipulated every time I walk out of my room.’

1.8 million LGBTQ youth in America “seriously consider” suicide each year

New research has revealed worrying statistics about mental health among LGBTQ youth.

The new report from The Trevor Project, an American charity that focuses on suicide prevention for young LGBTQ people, has estimated that 1,892,000 LGBTQ people aged 13-24 in the US have “seriously considered” suicide in the past year.

Of that total number, the charity estimate that 1,199,000 LGBTQ youth aged 13-18 have seriously considered suicide in the past year, while 693,000 LGBTQ youth aged 19-24 have seriously considered suicide in the past year.

The charity also found that LGBTQ youth with at least one accepting parent were 40% less likely to report a suicide attempt int the past year.

“Suicide is an ongoing public health crisis for young people in the U.S., especially among LGBTQ youth,” said Amit Paley, the CEO and executive director of The Trevor Project.

“Better understanding the mental health experiences of LGBTQ young people is a major step in addressing their significantly higher risk for attempting suicide. Together, we can ensure that LGBTQ young people know their lives have value, and that they are heard, loved, and never alone.”

How I survived three suicide attempts as gay teen and am now getting angry

I was seven years old when I knew I was different. One day my brain pieced it all together and suddenly it hit me: ‘Wait, am I gay?’

My whole life changed forever. Things now made sense but I hated who I was becoming. I started to wonder what my parents would think. Would I lose my friends? Will society reject me? All as a 12-year-old boy.

I withdrew and would spend most of my time outside of school in my room. I stopped talking for fear people would be able to tell from the sound of my voice. I became depressed and isolated.

Now friendless, I spent my 13th birthday alone in my room feeling awful about myself. I couldn’t see a future where I could be happy again. Two days later I tried to take my life for the first time.

Nobody knew I had tried to take my life and I felt embarrassed. I didn’t know what to do, or who to talk to. Because the suicide attempt was linked to my sexuality it was impossible to seek help. After that attempt I thought life might get better but it got worse.

Jack Padilla was bullied by five students before killing self: mother

A Colorado high school freshman who committed suicide in February was bullied by his schoolmates, including one who urged him to kill himself, his grief-stricken mother said this week.

Jeanine Padilla told the Denver Post that her 15-year-old son, Jack, was regularly tormented by at least five students at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, where cops are now investigating the teen’s death.

“It’s just devastating to know he was probably so scared,” Padilla told the newspaper. “But still trying to stand up for himself.”

Jack Padilla died on Feb. 14, but relatives didn’t find out about the alleged bullying until after his death, according to his mother. She’s now calling on district officials to “expel the bullies” who contributed to her son’s suffering.

Bisexual youth are the most likely to be bullied & consider suicide

Often overlooked in both straight and gay circles, bisexual-identified people nevertheless make up a significant part of the population. The 2015-2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 7% of youth identify as bisexual, compared to 4% being unsure or questioning, and just 2% identifying as gay or lesbian.

For Bisexual Health Awareness Month, the Trevor Project has released a new look at the YRBS data from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), highlighting the suicide risks prevalent amongst bisexual youth.

Their findings are alarming: almost half of bisexual youth considered suicide as an option within the past 12 months, with 40% making an actual plan to take their life. 27% attempted suicide.
