Homicides skyrocket across U.S. during pandemic, while robberies and rapes plummet

In Greensboro, N.C., the violence has gotten so extreme that a shootout erupted in front of the county courthouse the other day, across the street from the sheriff’s office, leaving a 20-year-old man dead. Greensboro set a city record with 45 homicides last year, and, as of Friday, already had 54 this year.

“We’ve always had a level of gang activity,” Greensboro Police Chief Brian James said in an interview, “but it’s more prolific now. I’m not sure what’s changed, but the offenders are more bold than they’ve ever been.”

Some police commanders say the twin impacts of the coronavirus and civil uprisings against police violence caused them to redirect their officers away from proactive anti-crime programs, whether due to virus-related budget cuts or strategic redeployment of forces to handle the unrest. Other officials point to job loss and other stresses of the pandemic as fueling tension and leading to violence. And with many schools shuttered, police say, many areas have seen a rise in violence involving juveniles.

“We haven’t seen numbers like this since the ’90s,” said PERF Executive Director Chuck Wexler. “We’ve had 20 years of steady declines in crime. Is this just an aberration, or does this portend something for the future? This has been under the radar because of the pandemic, but something’s happening across the country in the most serious crimes. The next administration, they’re going to have to pay serious attention to this.”

Just sitting idle, and like my grandmother used to say, ‘Idle hands are the devil’s workshop.’ We’re seeing people dying of silliness, for no reason. A year ago, we weren’t seeing that.”

New York City Police To Stop Removing Religious People's Headwear

The New York Police Department (NYPD) will no longer remove religious people's headwear—such as turbans, hijabs, kippahs or habits—when taking their mugshots, according to a new settlement announced on Monday.

The changed policy, which takes effect in 60 days, is the result of a class-action lawsuit filed on March 16, 2018 by Arwa Aziz and Jamilla Clark, two Muslim women. The women said the NYPD's policy of removing religious headwear violated their religious rights and left them in tears and shame following their separate encounters with police.

Adele is hit by claims of 'cultural appropriation' after showing off her seven stone weight loss in a Jamaican-flag string bikini top and bantu knots in her hair to mark cancelled Notting Hill Carnival

Adele has been slammed for cultural appropriation after donning a Jamaican flag string bikini top to mark the cancelled Notting Hill Carnival.

In a picture shared to her Instagram, the songstress, posing in the garden of her $9.5million Beverly Hills home, wore her hair in Bantu knots leading some to slam the choice as 'insensitive'.

The hairstyle - small, coiled buns secured against the side of the head - is associated with people of African descent.

Adele is hit by claims of 'cultural appropriation'

'She grew up in black culture, she's from Tottenham': Adele is defended by Naomi Campbell, Alexandra Burke and MP David Lammy after being accused of 'cultural appropriation' for wearing a Jamaican-flag bikini and bantu knots

I think a person's hair should be free to twirl and knot whichever way it pleases. No one owns shit. It belongs to God. If the Bieberette and Auntie Em can be considered black so can Adele. 31-Aug-2020

Man kicked out of sick parents’ house after partying on Fire Island amid COVID-19

Giancarlo Albanese, the unapologetic man who flocked to Fire Island Pines last weekend — and posted a photo of a large, maskless all-male rave he attended with the caption “Fuck your mask … Fuck your vaccine” — has reportedly been booted from his parents’ house over his failure to keep it socially distant.

Queerty reports that a man who claims to be Albanese’s brother responded to that Instagram upload, which itself drew a number of inflammatory comments from Instagram users, telling him to scram.

“Find a new home because you’re not welcome at the one you currently live at,” he wrote. “Complete disrespect for [Mom] and Dad’s lives, both who are very weak. Mom has Chemo on Friday and you’re out doing this shit? Go live off on your own and not under your [parents’] roof and you can do whatever you want.”

In a nearly 14-minute video rant posted Wednesday to his Instagram profile, Albanese — an admitted conspiracy theorist — wouldn’t apologize for his actions. The clip makes no mention of his eviction, but he says he has “nothing to be sorry about,” and the same goes for the “hundreds of thousands, if not millions” of people who went out to celebrate July 4 last week.

“The world has been consumed by mass hysteria and paranoia on an unprecedented scale right now,” he says, adding that he refuses to fall for it. “We’re not going to fall for the lab-made virus, we’re not going to fall for the mass-media marketing campaign that’s been going on because it’s all bullshit, every single ounce of it.”

Passenger who squeezed flight attendant’s butt & called him “gay boy” gets sent to prison

An unruly passenger was just sentenced to six months in prison for the sexual assault of a male flight attendant.

The passenger, Gavin Capps, was flying with EasyJet from Manchester, U.K., to Iceland for work this past January, when he attacked the flight attendant.

Capps had three beers on the flight and went to the front of the plane to get more, but he was sent back and told to wait for the in-flight service. When the duty-free trolley came down the aisle, Capps took 400 cigarettes from it and hid them under his seat.

Flight attendants warned him to stop causing trouble, but then he attacked.

Religious exemptions are gutting civil rights protections, advocacy groups warn

The Trump administration's expansion of religious exemptions is undermining civil rights protections and codifying discrimination against marginalized groups — particularly LGBTQ people — according to a report released Monday by three research and advocacy groups.

Using a combination of new rules, legal interventions and newly created divisions, the departments of Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Justice, Labor and State have all taken steps to advance "religious liberty," often at the expense of LGBTQ rights, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Center for American Progress and the Movement Advancement Project argue in their report.

The proposed rules — from the departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, Labor, Housing and Urban Development, Veterans Affairs, Homeland Security, Agriculture and Education, along with the U.S. Agency for International Development — would undo several Obama-era regulations, including those that require federally funded religious organizations to inform beneficiaries about certain rights.

For example, if a homeless LGBTQ teen sought help from a faith-based provider and the provider was not accepting of the teen's sexual orientation or gender identity, the provider would no longer have to inform the teen under the new rule about alternative providers that may be more accepting.

"These rules would be harmful to LGBTQ people, women, religious minorities and others during the best of times, but they're particularly unconscionable during a public health crisis when even more people than usual are relying on social services," said Rachel Laser, president of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, which was not involved with Monday's report.

An NYC man tried to forcibly remove Asian-American nurse from the subway, police say

An Asian-American nurse was on a subway train in New York Sunday when a man approached him making discriminatory statements, police told NBC News.

According to police, the man then grabbed the nurse by his wrist and shoulder and tried to remove him from the train.

"Hey Chinaman, you're infected," the man said, according to police. "You need to move to a different car. I'm going to beat this Chinese nigger up."

Woman Records Racists She’s Met On Omegle During the Pandemic

Sophie Wang went on Omegle to find new friends during the pandemic. Instead, she was met with racist verbal comments, asking her if she ate bats and was accused of making the coronavirus.

There has been a rise in racist acts and xenophobia towards Asians and Asian Americans during the pandemic, and Sophie is one of many who have been calling them out.

One Omegle user called her “Ling Ling.” Another slammed his hand on the table and said he hated her for making coronavirus when she wouldn’t show her chest. Another user said there would be “no more of her kind” and he demonstrated that anyone with slitted eyes would be disintegrated by nuclear substance from “American nuclear missiles” sent to all of Asia.

Gun killings in U.S. cities: The scourge not even a pandemic lockdown can stop

A car pulled up to a convenience store, and four people hopped out. One had a baseball bat. What ensued was a fight over $180, one participant later said.

By the time it was over, guns were drawn, shots were exchanged, and one bullet tore into a nearby car, striking the head of five-year-old Kearria Attison.

The girl died. Before fleeing the scene, one of the people involved reportedly offered the girl's mother a quick apology.

Several people now face murder charges for the deadly shooting in Jacksonville, Fla., on April 6, which police say involved individuals with violent pasts.

"Too bad these criminals haven't taken time off during the COVID-19 outbreak," one woman posted on the police department's Facebook page.

Anti-LGBTQ hate group is behind bid to reopen churches & endanger communities

The anti-LGBTQ hate group Liberty Counsel, one of the groups that serve as the legal defense arm of the religious right, is helping to lead the push to reopen churches during the coronavirus pandemic.

The effort by evangelicals endangers the lives of parishioners and community members who would come in contact with the potentially infected churchgoers who had gathered in large groups.

The group is calling for churches to “ReOpen” on Sunday, May 3 following several instances of far-right ministers refusing to shut down services as part of measures banning large gatherings in a desperate attempt to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

A Christian evangelist who mocked the response to the novel coronavirus pandemic has died after likely being infected while preaching on the streets of New Orleans. A Virginia minister who defied lockdown orders and vowed to keep preaching until he was arrested or died, saying he was protected by God, died less than a week later from COVID-19.
