A Look At The Staggering Sexual Harassment Numbers In The Legal Profession

A new international survey reveals that sexual harassment in the legal profession is truly at epidemic proportions. The survey, with almost 7,000 respondents, was conducted by the International Bar Association and market research company Acritas and asked both lawyers and nonlawyers in the legal profession from 135 countries questions about sexual harassment and bullying within the industry. The results are disheartening, to say the least.

Over a third of women — 36.6 percent of women and 7.4 percent of men — say they’ve been victims of sexual harassment. When in comes to bullying nearly 1 in 2 women say they’ve been a target, compared with 1 in 3 men who say the same.

Texas Couple Held Girl as Slave for 16 Years, Called Her 'Dog' and 'Worthless'

A Texas couple who held a young girl from West Africa as a slave for 16 years were each sentenced Monday to seven years in federal prison, PEOPLE confirms.

A press release from federal prosecutors states Toure and Cros-Toure must pay $288,620.24 in restitution to their victim, who managed to escape in 2016.

A federal jury convicted the defendants of forced labor, conspiracy to commit alien harboring, and alien harboring on January 11 following a four-day trial.

Now, as a consequence of their convictions, both defendants, who are citizens of Guinea and lawful permanent residents of the United States, may lose their U.S. immigration status and be deported after they complete their sentences.

Migrant 10-year-old sexually assaulted, given drugs in custody, lawsuit says

A Guatemalan father filed a lawsuit against two nonprofits housing migrant children, claiming his 10-year-old son was given “powerful psychotropic drugs” without parental consent and sexually assaulted by another child during his time in government custody.

The father, identified only as J. E. B., claimed in the lawsuit filed in state court in Texas last week that both Southwest Key and Shiloh Treatment Center in Texas “acted with fraud, malice, and gross neglect” in their treatment of his son.

The lawsuit also claims that the boy, identified as F.C.B. in the suit, was subjected to physical assault, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress by both facilities.

CALIFORNIA MAN CONVICTED OF USING UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS FOR FORCED LABOR

The owner of a construction companies in California was convicted of committing forced labor, according to a Monday press release from the United States Attorney's Office from the Northern District of California.

Job Torres Hernandez, 38, was convicted on one count of "forced labor" and one count of "harboring illegal aliens for commercial advantage or private financial gain," according to the press release.

Job Torres recruited workers from Mexico, who he forced to live in poor conditions and did not pay, the statement said. Undocumented immigrants, identified in court documents by their initials, testified at trial about the conditions. They said they were forced to work 24-hour shifts, lived in a commercial warehouse and a garage in Hayward and were restricted in using bathrooms and showers.

A superseding indictment, filed in December, said Hernandez obtained the labor of his employees by "physical restraint and threats of force, threats of serious harm, means of abuse and threatened abuse of law and legal process and means of a scheme, plan and pattern intended to cause his employees to believe that if they did not perform such labor or services, they would suffer serious harm."

6 Sneaky Signs a Trusted Adult Could Be a Child Sexual Abuser

Michael Jackson is now deceased and consequently he will never be convicted in a court of law, but many of Jackson’s alleged behaviors were typical of those exhibited by child sexual offenders who use grooming behaviors. Grooming behaviors are the behaviors and techniques a sexual offender employs so that they can engage in abuse without detection. Grooming behaviors are directed toward the intended victim, the child’s parents or guardians and the community at large. They generally follow a series of stages that may include selecting a vulnerable victim, gaining access to the child, developing trust of the child and their guardians, and desensitizing the child to sexual touch so the abuse can take place without detection. However, many of these grooming behaviors also overlap with behaviors that caring, involved adults engage in and thus it is often hard for adults to recognize them before abuse takes place.

The following behaviors could be potential indications of grooming.

Diocese removed Iowa priest after girl reported touching

A longtime Roman Catholic priest in Iowa has been removed from the ministry indefinitely after a girl complained a year ago that he improperly touched her, a diocese has confirmed.

The fourth-grader alleged that the Rev. Brian Danner of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Humboldt rubbed the top of her leg while taking her confession, the Diocese of Sioux City told The Associated Press. The girl's parents were "extremely upset" and complained to church officials, recalled diocese lawyer Michael Ellwanger.

The diocese reported the incident to the county attorney last December and has revoked Danner's ability to function as a priest indefinitely. Its review found that Danner's actions were inappropriate but didn't constitute sexual abuse, Ellwanger said.

Child bride auctioned on Facebook in 'barbaric use of technology'

Facebook has come under fire for a "barbaric use of technology" that allowed the sale of a child bride to be held on its site.

An auction was held on the social media platform for a 16-year-old girl in South Sudan which sought payment for her hand in marriage.
Facebook said the post was taken down as soon as the company learned of it, but that wasn't until after the girl was married.

According to children's rights organization Plan International, the girl was bid on by five men, some of whom were reportedly high-ranking South Sudanese government officials.

Woman Held Captive for 10 Years in 'Basement of Horrors' Speaks Out: 'I Thought I Was Going to Die There'

A Pennsylvania woman who was held captive for 10 years in what has reportedly been described as a “basement of horrors” is sharing her story seven years after she was rescued.

“I thought I was going to die there,” Tamara Breeden told local TV station WCAU in an interview this week of her time imprisoned in the basement of a Philadelphia home where she and several other developmentally disabled adults were kept.

The group was eventually saved in 2011 and their captor, Linda Weston, along with three co-conspirators were sent to prison.

Breeden, now 36, told WCAU that in addition to being physically abused and kept in torturous conditions — without light, a bed or a bathroom — she and the others were forced to urinate in a bucket, wear clothes pulled from the trash and denied showers.

Rose McGowan's heard more LGBTI MeToo stories 'than the media would ever cover’

Rose McGowan has talked about the impact of MeToo movement among LGBTIs, saying she’s ‘humbled’ when community members share their stories with her.

Speaking at Damian Barr’s Literary Salon in London last month, the activist said she’d heard more stories ‘than the media would ever cover’, particularly from gay men and boys.

The former Charmed actress became a figurehead for the MeToo movement, which fights against sexual abuse and assault, after becoming one of the most high profile accusers of disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein last year.

Asked by GSN at the event: ‘Would you like to see the the MeToo movement reverberate deeper among the LGBTI community and specifically gay men?’ Rose gave a detailed and thoughtful response.

White New York City Teacher Who Stepped On Black Students' Backs During Slavery Lessons Wants To Sue Over Reverse Racism

In peak Caucasity, a white Bronx social studies teacher who is facing being fired after stepping on Black students’ backs during a lesson on slavery, is now claiming that she is the real victim of racism (literally, reverse racism) and intends to file a lawsuit, which her lawyer says could be worth up to $1 billion.

According to the New York Daily News, the issue started back in February at Middle School 118, when Patricia Cummings picked out black students, told them to lie on the floor and stepped on their backs to show them what it felt like during a lesson on U.S. slavery, per the reports of multiple students and one staffer.

Now, Cummings has filed a notice of claim, filed in anticipation of a lawsuit, claiming that she is the real victim here of reverse discrimination, defamation, negligence and a litany of other claims.

FOUR BROOKLYN BOYS REPEATEDLY RAPED AT CATHOLIC CHURCH REACH $27.5 MILLION SETTLEMENT

Four men who were sexually assaulted as boys by a teacher at a Roman Catholic church have reached a $27.5 million settlement with the Diocese of Brooklyn, one of the largest ever payouts for victims of abuse within the church.

Each victim, now aged between 19 and 21, will receive around $6.8 million from the diocese and an affiliated after-school program after they repeatedly abused by Angelo Serrano, 67, while he taught at St. Lucy’s-St. Patrick’s Church in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, reports The New York Times.

The abuse is said to have occurred between 2003 and 2009, when the victims were aged between 8 and 12.
