Figurine, The (2009) Arf

The goddess grants seven years of prosperity then nullifies it. It's raw and clumsy, vibrant on culture, low on horror clicks and coherent in twisty deception. 11-Jan-2020

Camille Paglia: The Death of the Hollywood Sex Symbol (Guest Column)

Who killed the sex symbol?

It's no mystery that in the era of #MeToo, the rules of combat have changed on the sexual battlefield. Women will no longer tolerate condescending or degrading treatment that was once business as usual in the workplace or dating arena. But in this long overdue push-back against sexual coercion and exploitation, has something valuable been lost?

The sex symbol was arguably Hollywood's most brilliant artifact, propelling the young movie industry to world impact from the moment that Theda Bara flashed her coiled-snake brassiere in Cleopatra (1917). Sex was great box office. With its impudent populism, Hollywood crashed through stuffy proprieties lingering from the Victorian age and stationed itself at the bold forefront of the modern liberalization of sex. Movies were in sync with the radical new spirit of American women, who won the right to vote in 1920 and kicked up their heels throughout the flapper decade of the Roaring Twenties.

The great sex symbols of Hollywood were manufactured beings, engineered by trial and error, with the mass audience as their ultimate judge and jury. Decade by decade, the movie industry rediscovered primal archetypes that have animated myths around the world since the Stone Age. Major male sex symbols like Clark Gable, Cary Grant and Sidney Poitier have a mesmerizing natural authority onscreen, a supranormal power of personality and density of being that transcend their roles. Like their antecedents in ancient hero sagas, they inhabit and explore physical space, whose frustrations and dangers they endure but ultimately defeat.

The female sex symbol, however, commands emotional or psychological space. Her sensual beauty is an alluring mirage, hypnotizing and sometimes paralyzing. Never entirely present, she is attuned to another reality, an extrasensory dimension to which we have no access. There is an unsettling aura of the uncanny around the major female sex symbols, who channel shadowy powers above or below the social realm.

Starred Up (2013) Howl

Fixing anger management whilst in prison. Jack O'Connell wholly conveys a ferocious and unchained delinquent with soft edging. Ben Mendelsohn is definitely the dad you don't want raising you in prison. Rupert Friend is the therapist that wants to reform them expressing very well through character evolvement that they can also reform him. Well acted, "candy-colored," well made. A take on the anger that builds in the underprivileged man. 15-Nov-2019

Actually, Madonna Was the First to Subvert Country Music Style

I remember seeing Madonna’s “Don’t Tell Me” on MTV in 2000 when I was 11 years old. It was mind-blowing. Growing up in New England, country music never hit close to home. It was all Garth Brooks singing about driving a truck with a fat engine and cracking a warm beer by the lake. But Madonna took the genre and spun it on its head in one of the most transportive videos of her career: steamy cowboys and a dark ranchero vibe, mixed up with a lot of sand-strewn cheek. (It was also the first time Madonna played guitar on an album.) It’s almost hard to believe that the music video is almost 20 years old. “Don’t Tell Me” was the OG beginnings of country music style breaking into the pop world. Subversive twang is going mainstream in the form of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” Orville Peck’s masked exploration of masculinity in country music, and Diplo brooding in a Nudie suit on Instagram. But let me remind you that Madonna was the first to pave the way for giddy-up pop.

Rocketman (2019) Woof

There are tidbits I didn't know. Child genius, warped sensibilities and family hypocrisy. The catalog is immense as is the concept of each song. Many odes to so many things only we can remember. The razzle dazzle is there, the actor siphons the legend's anger and the music remains inspired. A life worth celebrating. 05-Jul-2019

Dan Reynolds speaks out against gay ‘cure’ therapy at Billboard awards

Dan Reynolds continues to prove his status as an LGBTQ ally.
The American singer-songwriter, who graced the cover of GAY TIMES in January year, and his band Imagine Dragons were the winners of the Top Rock Artist award at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards this week.

Dan used the opportunity to highlight a cause close to his heart, dedicating his speech to LGBTQ youth who have been – or are at risk of being – put through the harmful practice of gay conversion ‘therapy’.

“I just wanna take this moment to say there are still 34 states that have no laws banning conversion therapy, and on top of that 58% of our LGBTQ population live in those states,” he said.

“This can change, but its gonna take all of us talking to our state legislators [and] pushing forward laws to protect our LGBTQ youth.”

Are YOUR children at risk? Child abuse charity reveals the five simple questions EVERY parent needs to ask before signing up youngsters to after-school activities

A national charity is urging parents to ask five simple questions to make sure their children are safe when they attend out-of-school clubs.

Thousands of parents across the country use after-school and holiday clubs to help with childcare, but many do not realise these groups can be unregulated.

Now, Derby-based charity NWG Network, which supports survivors of child sex abuse, has started a campaign to get parents and clubs talking openly about safeguarding.

ALMA is ready to be the queer female popstar she always wanted to see / Amplify by Gay Times

ALMA first came to prominence in her home country when she was 17, competing in the seventh season of Finland’s edition of Idol. By 2016 she’d released two Top 10 singles with Karma and Dye My Hair, but it was third cut Chasing Highs that saw her bag Top 20 placings in the UK and Germany in 2017. From there, plans for a full-length debut album were put into motion.

“It was very hard to know which direction I wanted to go in,” ALMA admits when it came to writing a full collection of music. “I didn’t know what it was two years ago.” She retreated to writing sessions in Helsinki and Los Angeles, chopping and changing ideas until she struck upon the track that would inform the rest of her debut. “Cowboy was the song when I understood what I want to do and who I am,” she explains. “After that it was clear.”

The key, she discovered, was to start being totally honest to who she is. Cowboy centres on trying to fit into new social circles and discovering yourself as you come out of your teen years, something she had to deal with in more intense circumstances than most young people. “When I first moved to Los Angeles I felt so small and so emo,” she smiles. “Everybody was so energetic and positive, and I felt like I was just not fitting in at all. I needed to create an alter ego or something, to be like ‘I’m going to survive, I’m gonna make it through, I’m a motherfucking cowboy!’ It was a line that was in my head all the time.”

This machine can make gallons of fresh drinking water right out of thin air

Machines designed by a California-based team can produce, in some cases, up to 300 gallons of fresh drinking water a day by pulling it straight from the air. And the team just won a $1.5 million prize for it.

The machines, dubbed Skywater, were created by the Skysource/Skywater Alliance, a team of sustainability experts from Venice, California. Skywater machines, housed in big metal boxes, are atmospheric water generators that condense water vapor from the atmosphere and turn it into drinking water. The machines can be powered by solar energy or the burning of biofuels. Depending on the model, they can be used for households, for farming or for emergency relief efforts.
