Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
Taylor-Joy shared her thoughts by creating a narrative we could understand, sparkling eyes wasn't given enough artillery to establish a heartfelt character that could pump the breaks and let you feel, Hemsworth establishes that his Thor-type villain is not to be fucked with, the director's vision infected the tech crew. They lived up to expectations. Action sequences were bombastic and artistic. The war scenes confused but they didn't disappoint. The mythology skipped key details that would have granted an Anna/Charlize showdown. I needed more information to explain how a girl succeeds in a filthy society that wants to purge. (I would have made little and middle Furiosa big Furiosa's daughters and have one of her instant love interests be the questionable father.) The team-up would be awesome. There wasn't enough odyssey to landscape the people but it sure looked great. 24-Aug-2024
All Quiet On The Western Front (2022)
The details identified were gratifyingly fresh. The movie is relentless from beginning to end, setting up the dreams of boys as they're woked into becoming men in a war that could have been avoided. The significance that war is not a boys game runs throughout. War creates toxic men and brave soldiers with hell in their dreams. The politics were presented with the right amount of exposure and clarity. I understood it. A great musical score minimizes itself so the story can sing. It sang with an orchestra. Deft hands aplenty and cheers. 21-Jan-2023
Throne Of Blood (1957)
Kurosawa's imagining of Macbeth was intoxicating. He lingered until we felt the character's desperation. The background was still and intimidating. The actors wore silent film faces with impassioned speak. Toshiro Mifune was a beast royale as MacBeth. Isuzu Yamada was fabulously haunting as his Lady. The rustle of her dress, the scary predictions, the make-up and bouts of violent madness. She was a favorite thing. Deaths were choreographed with coherent math and geography. Inspiration is achieved. Masterpiece recreation is impossible because the best things in it happened by accident. 28-Mar-2022
Bedknobs And Broomsticks (1971)
At the age of nine my gay aunt took me to see this film. It was my first time in an American movie theater. Of course mother took me to the theater but it had to be in Spanish and include softcore porn, party music and/or sadistic violence. I saw that shit everyday. I wanted magic.
A witch that needs one last spell to obliterate the Nazis. Awesome education for kids. Show them who the enemy is. Angela Lansbury weaved spells and lulled me soundly to sleep. Charming no-nonsense woman. The spells were clever, the effects maintained the innocence of the time and the magic was reestablished. The writers concocted fairytales from the jumble in kids' heads and made sense of them. The music, the production, the fun and great sportsmanship kept the gift alive. Thank you, auntie. 08-Feb-2021
Mulan (2020)
It's so hellbent on announcing what it is before it becomes that it fails. 29-Jan-2021
In This Corner Of The World (2016)
Ambitious and lovingly detailed account of a war torn life. The audacity of surviving when so much has perished. 28-Dec-2019
Matrix Revolutions, The (2003)
It trades cool for mythology, it veers from life towards dread and it spends too much time pondering its confusion. 30-Jun-2019
Morgan, The Pirate (1960)
Spanish history, slave trade, pirates, wenches and ship wars. Plenty of action and debauchery for short attention spans and Steve Reeves exposes body beautiful to keep the eyes fixed. 20-Apr-2019
Key, The (1958)
Heroic men accepting military suicide missions during WWII. Sophia provides the wife they would never know and a facsimile of a home, in return, she gets to eat. The stars lush, blowing every romantic nuance onto the screen. 12-Apr-2019
Avatar (2009)
The macho pose may seem off date but who cares when the master has proliferated a grand illusion and Zoe Saldana is gut wrenched. 15-Sep-2018
Extinction (2018)
Moderate presentation of big ideas.
(There are fun moments.) 31-Jul-2018
Sold (2016)
The story is simplified and poignant so we can witness it. That a man's unrestricted desire is greater than the sacredness of a child is its reality and our monster. 24-Jun-2018
Post, The (2017)
The master adds suspense to the word and intrigue to his education. Meryl opened the door that leads to her genius. 18-Jun-2018
Casualties of War (1989)
The director's presence and personality emblazons an already perplexed account of inhumanity in the midst of war. The shots are as unnerving as they are beautiful. The accents and the oneupmanship are overexerted but when the camera follows Fox and its victim (Thuy Thu Lee,) it allows them to speak hushedly, flatteringly and compassionately. 10-Jun-2018
