Black people in UK four times more likely to die of COVID-19: ONS

Black people in the United Kingdom are more than four times as likely to die from coronavirus than white people, the UK's statistics office said on Thursday.

Those of Bangladeshi and Pakistani ethnicity also have a significantly higher chance of dying from COVID-19 than white people, even when adjusting for deprivation, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

The pandemic isn't changing crime like you'd expect

Whatever you expect the COVID-19 pandemic to do to crime rates, it's probably not doing that.

Well, not exactly. There's no single story of coronavirus and crime. Some types of crime are increasing during the pandemic, while other crime rates are falling. Crime is up in some places and down in others. It will be tempting, not least for me, to cherry-pick coronavirus-era data to "prove" how our justice system should or shouldn't change, yet as with so much of the pandemic information available to us, right now caution is more warranted than certainty.

By far the most frequent headline claim about crime rates during the COVID-19 outbreak is that they're falling. That's not wrong, but neither is it complete. A USA Today survey of 20 police departments found all but one saw criminal incidents decline in the first two weeks of March as social distancing began. Further analysis of "crime data published by 53 law enforcement agencies in two dozen states" reinforced that trend, USA Today reported, finding law enforcement "logged dramatically fewer calls for service, crime incidents, and arrests" in those two weeks than in the six weeks prior. Residential burglary, robbery, assault, and murder all decreased. (Miami has not had a homicide in six weeks, for example, a record since 1964.)

But some falling crime rates aren't necessarily attributable to change in public behavior. Shifts in policing practice are rather responsible. COVID-19 is spreading within some police departments (notably, New York, Chicago, and Detroit), and in some cities, officers have been directed to avoid unnecessary contact with the public.

Christian Privilege Is Spreading Like a Virus

At the end of March, President Trump attempted to reassure Americans who are feeling the stress of the coronavirus pandemic by inviting Mike Lindell, the CEO of MyPillow, to speak at his daily press briefing.

Calling America a “nation [that] had turned his back on God,” Mr. Lindell encouraged people to “use this time at home to get back in the Word, read our Bibles, and spend time with our families.”

“Christian privilege” is the term atheists and nonreligious people frequently use to describe how Christian viewpoints, particularly conservative evangelical ones like those expressed by Lindell and Graham, are favored over nonreligious viewpoints in our law and culture. If you ask most Americans, they believe that the separation of church and state enshrined in the U.S. Constitution should apply to everyone and prevent the government from giving taxpayer dollars or special favoritism to churches. Sadly, this is less and less true.

Former CBS Reporter Lara Logan Revisits Terrifying 2011 Rape by Mob in Egypt Amidst $25 Million Lawsuit

Lara Logan is recounting her horrific 2011 rape in Egypt while she was covering the resignation of then-president Hosni Mubarak.

Logan, 49, opened up about the ordeal in an interview with Newsweek on Monday, telling the outlet that she wants to tell her story again as part of a bigger discussion about the media.

“You can’t have a #MeToo movement standing up for women and righting the wrongs of the past but say nothing about a female journalist who was gang-raped and almost died,” she said.

Logan, who was in Cairo at the time working as a journalist for CBS News, said that at first, the crowd she was in seemed “pro-American.”

“Suddenly, our translator turned to me with a look of sheer terror and said, ‘Run, run!’ I felt people grabbing between my legs,” she recalled. “I was quite stunned.”

The religious right has a new coronavirus concern: people are touching their no-no parts

The religious right has been fighting to keep churches open during a pandemic, putting parishioners at risk of catching the novel coronavirus, some even insisting they’re “covered in the blood of Jesus” and therefore protected.

Now they’ve upped the ante, saying the true “silent but deadly disease” is being ignored: people are watching pornography and masturbating while they’re cooped up at home.

‘Most homophobic’ minister in Israel, who thinks all LGBT+ people are sinners, tests positive for COVID-19

According to The Times of Israel, Litzman, 71, has been accused of violating his own ministry’s guidelines on social distancing in order to continue to attend prayer services.

As well as being Israel’s health minister, he also leads the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party and witnesses said he was seen praying at the home of another member of his sect three days after indoor services were banned.

His own department’s guidelines became stricter, barring prayer services altogether, but Litzman was later seen attending a service at a synagogue near his home.

Kanye West & Taylor Swift’s “Famous” Phone Call Leaks

The Kanye West/Taylor Swift feud will never die, but you will. Four years later, the full, unedited version of the infamous “Famous” phone call between the two celebs has finally leaked online.

In case you just woke up from a lengthy coma…On Kanye’s The Life Of Pablo track “Famous,” he rapped, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/ Why? I made that bitch famous.” Taylor, understandably, was not happy about that, and said so. Then Kanye’s wife Kim Kardashian claimed that Swift had actually OKed the line during a phone call beforehand and posted an edited video of the conversation in question that seemed to support her side of the story. She, and everyone, started calling Swift a snake.

Swift has always maintained that although yes, the call that launched a thousand snake emojis did indeed take place, Kanye never actually played the full song for her and never told her that he was going to refer to her as “that bitch.” And, well, the new footage that has now emerged pretty much vindicates her.

The Coronavirus Pandemic Is a Reminder the Rich and Powerful Won't Save Us

The coronavirus pandemic has been a shock to our systems — political, social, and economic. As governments scramble to adequately respond to outbreaks of COVID-19, mandates to physically isolate ourselves from each other are impacting workers in vulnerable positions. Meanwhile, celebrities are hosting online sing-alongs, some politically powerful people have allegedly exploited the moment for financial gain, and the rich continue to deliver mind-blowing indications that their concern in a global crisis is first and foremost only for themselves.

It’s all an important reminder of something many of us felt even before this moment: The rich and powerful will not save us.

President Donald Trump, of all people, exhibited a rare display of class analysis when asked about the elite getting to the front of the line for tests, saying at a White House press conference Wednesday, “That’s the story of life.”

Trump, a poignant embodiment of the out-of-touch elite, is in this case absolutely correct. Disparities and inequities are nothing new. In this moment of crisis, we will have the chance to bear witness to how the fundamental imbalances of our world protect some and victimize others.

Having an older brother makes a man 38% more likely to be gay

A new statistical study found that men with older brothers are 38% more likely to be gay than men who are their mother’s oldest son.

In a paper published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B this week, the researchers explain that they wanted to examine the “fraternal birth order effect” hypothesis of male homosexuality, the idea that having older brothers increases a man’s chance of being gay.

LGBTQ people are more vulnerable to coronavirus for three reasons

On 11 March, more than 100 LGBTQ organisations released a joint open letter to healthcare providers and mainstream media outlets to make them aware that queer people are at greater risk of contracting the coronavirus.

Dr. Scout, Deputy Director for the National LGBT Cancer Network, states: “As the spread of the novel coronavirus a.k.a. COVID-19 increases, many LGBTQ+ people are understandably concerned about how this virus may affect us and our communities.

“The undersigned want to remind all parties handling COVID-19 surveillance, response, treatment, and media coverage that LGBTQ+ communities are among those who are particularly vulnerable to the negative health effects of this virus.”

The letter continues to say that LGBTQ people are vulnerable because of three specific factors.

LGBT+ people are 46% more likely to smoke and new research explains why

‘This report suggests that many LGBT+ people start smoking in similar circumstances to the general population. But it highlights that smokers in the LGBT+ community have many more triggers to sustain smoking than there are triggers to stop.

‘The reasons for this are complex. But considering that members of the LGBT+ community are more prone to stress, anxiety and generally poorer mental health and depression, self-medication using nicotine or other substances is commonplace and unsurprising.’

The researchers examined whether being LGBT+ makes people more likely to smoke. They found there wasn’t evidence for that. But LGBT+ people’s gender or sexual identity does make them more likely to keep smoking.

And the report argues there is a ‘culture of acceptance’ of smoking. Furthermore, it says that smoking gives a ‘sense of belonging’ to some in the LGBT+ community.

Jim Carrey slammed for saying female reporter was only thing left to do on his ‘bucket list’

Jim Carrey was slammed on Twitter Wednesday for telling a woman journalist in an interview that she was the only thing left for him to do on his “bucket list.”

Carrey, 58, was being interviewed about his role in “Sonic the Hedgehog” by Charlotte Long of Heat Magazine when the journalist asked Carrey about his career.

“In the film, Sonic has a bucket list. I was wondering, after all you’ve done in your career and in your life, is there anything still left on your bucket list?” asked Long, who posted the interview on Twitter.

“Just you,” Carrey responds, as Long laughs and covers her mouth. “That’s it, it’s all done now.”
