41 shot Saturday night in NYC with at least 4 dead in citywide explosion of gun violence
New York City turned into the Wild West as a series of shootings claiming four lives and injuring 37 others erupted amid Fourth of July celebrations.
The shocking wave of violence came as the city was reeling from ongoing anti-police brutality protests, weeks of lockdown orders prompted by the coronavirus outbreak and soaring summer temperatures. Adding to the chaotic atmosphere, illegal fireworks exploded in all five boroughs throughout the night.
In the first fatal shooting of the night, Jose Cepeda, a young father, was blasted in the chest a little after midnight Sunday in East New York, Brooklyn.
Cepeda, 20, and a friend had a “little disagreement” in front of the victim’s home on Atkins Ave. near Pitkin Ave. that turned deadly, neighbor Natasha Ramsay told the Daily News.
“The first one shot got him dead,” Ramsay, 42, said. “It’s so sad.”
Medics rushed Cepeda to Brookdale University Hospital but he couldn’t be saved.
That was just the first in a series of horrifying incidents that cop unions blamed on Mayor de Blasio and Council Speaker Corey Johnson, who last week passed an annual budget that shifted about $1 billion away from the NYPD, a move aimed at meeting activists’ demands for police reform.

The Disunited States: Heavily armed Black Panthers target Confederate monument used by KKK as American flags are burned near Trump Tower and in Washington as Fourth of July protests sweep the country
More than a hundred heavily armed Black Panthers descended on the country's largest Confederate monument to demand its removal, while demonstrators burned American flags near Trump Tower as tens of thousands across the country attended Fourth of July protests.
On Saturday, as Donald Trump hosted hundreds at the White House for a July Fourth fireworks display, thousands of Americans ditched their traditional cookouts and celebrations for rallies and sit-ins, including a march in Washington DC in the searing 90-degree heat near the National Mall.
Flag burnings were also seen in Washington, as well as in New York City outside the Trump Tower, and on Trump's Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

Nobody Wants to See Your Cringey Fourth of July Celebrations
Here’s the thing: Now, more than ever, nobody wants to watch a 30-part Instagram story about a summer getaway. Life is absolutely, actively not good right now for any American with a sliver of a conscience or even a hint of financial instability. While it’s hard to begrudge anyone their coping mechanisms in this moment, it’s a good time to reflect on the rote patriotism that circulates every year on the dot. Proud to be an American? In this economy? With this rate of COVID-19 resurgence? Maybe not.
Right now, celebratory Fourth of July content is the normie equivalent of Kim Kardashian’s tweet about her daughter’s new fleet of sleek, black fairytale horses.
It’s tone deaf, it’s tacky, it’s like, where’d you even get 14 horses right now—except the 14 horses are a stand-in for the audacity to plan and publicize the fact you’re on a group vacation in the middle of a pandemic.
The world isn't laughing at America -- it's pitying us
It's like the Fourth of July, Bonfire Night, Diwali and Chinese New Year -- every night.
In the oppressive heat of the Covid-19 summer, US cities are suddenly reverberating with the crack and boom of fireworks that blast on into the small hours. Authorities haven't got a clue where the explosives are coming from.
It's perhaps not surprising that some people are letting off steam -- or rockets and firecrackers -- after months stuck at home under shutdowns. But the nightly cacophony is not just a nuisance to those whose nerves are already stretched to the breaking point by recent months -- they can cause injuries and house fires. In Brooklyn, troublemakers appeared to target a homeless man with a thrown firecracker.
One of Trump's big election lines in 2016 was that the world was laughing at America. That wasn't true, but now the reality is worse: A bemused world is pitying America.
'War zone': Footage of CHAZ shooting goes viral after zone 'security' confiscates livestreamer's phone

This is the second shooting in the CHAZ in as many days.
What are the details?
Twitch user Shawn Whiting livestreamed the shooting and its aftermath on Sunday evening.
Police Researcher: Officers Have Similar Biases Regardless Of Race
Shut down all police movies and TV shows. Now.
For a century, Hollywood has been collaborating with police departments, telling stories that whitewash police shootings and valorizing an action-hero style of policing over the harder, less dramatic work of building relationships with the communities cops are meant to serve and protect. There’s a reason for that beyond a reactionary streak hiding below the industry’s surface liberalism. Purely from a dramatic perspective, crime makes a story seem consequential, investigating crime generates action, and solving crime provides for a morally and emotionally satisfying conclusion.
The result is an addiction to stories that portray police departments as more effective than they actually are; crime as more prevalent than it actually is; and police use of force as consistently justified. There are always gaps between reality and fiction, but given what policing in America has too often become, Hollywood’s version of it looks less like fantasy and more like complicity.

EXCLUSIVE: 'We prepare to stop these murders by any means necessary.' Black Lives Matter leader declares war on police and group is 'training our people to defend our communities' in Black Panther style armed 'patrols'
A Black Lives Matter leader has declared war on the police and plans to release a blueprint for change that involves Black Panther style armed 'patrols' monitoring the behavior of officers on the streets, DailyMailTV can reveal.
Hawk Newsome, Chairman of BLM's Greater New York chapter, says the black rights group is 'mobilizing' its base and aims to develop a highly-trained 'military' arm to challenge police brutality head on.
In an exclusive interview, Newsome says the BLM movement has marched for years to wake people up to the realities of police brutality and oppression.
And he believes that since the tragic death of George Floyd - who died after his neck was pinned under the knee of white police officer Derek Chauvin during an arrest on Memorial Day in Minneapolis - people have finally awoken.
'We want liberation. We want the power to determine our own destiny. We want freedom from an oppressive government, and we want the immediate end of government sanctioned murder by the police.
'And we prepare to stop these government sanctioned murders by any means necessary.
'We are preparing and training our people to defend our communities.'
Lana Del Rey faces backlash over riot post on Instagram
Lana Del Rey is once again facing backlash from her fans, this time over a video showing looters in the riots following George Floyd's death.
Earlier this month, Del Rey took to Instagram to address criticism that her music was "glamorizing abuse."
In the message, Del Rey called out a plethora of other artists for making "songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, fucking, cheating, etc." Most of the women listed by Del Rey are black, causing followers to accuse her of racial bias in her response.
Now, amid nationwide protests and riots, Del Rey is facing criticism for sharing up-close-and-personal video footage of looters.
Transgender woman sexually assaulted at ICE site, advocates say
A transgender woman seeking asylum should be released after she was sexually assaulted and harassed while being detained in an Arizona immigration facility with men for nine months, advocates said Thursday.
Alejandra Alor Reyes, who is from Mexico, is suffering from PTSD and should be released on humanitarian grounds while she awaits an appeal in her asylum case, according to several groups, including ACLU of Arizona, Trans Queer Pueblo and Detention Watch Network.
They say her case is a further indication that transgender immigrants face unsafe conditions and that none are being held with members of the gender they identify with.

'Empire' actor Jussie Smollett hit with 16 count felony indictment by grand jury
An Illinois grand jury has indicted "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett on 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report, according to the Cook County State Attorney's Office.
The grand jury returned two separate sets of charges, Robert Foley, a senior advisor in the state attorney's office told ABC News.
The first set is related to what Smollett told officers about the alleged attack, including that the attackers called him racial and homophobic slurs, struck him with their hands, put a noose around his neck, and poured some sort of chemical substance on him.
Arrests and unrest in Sacramento as Becerra also declines to file charges in Stephon Clark shooting
Sacramento police arrested 84 people Monday night, including journalists, during a protest over the district attorney’s decision not to charge two officers who in March 2018 shot Stephon Clark, a black man holding a cellphone.
Among those arrested for refusal to disperse were local clergy members who had worked with the city for nearly a year to prevent tense protests like those that overtook the city following the shooting. Those protests ended up closing a freeway and blocking access to an NBA game.
