Dean Norris slams ‘rich fuck wads’ who ‘cheated for their already privileged kids’

“When I think of all the kids who studied hard, stayed up late, had part-time jobs to pay for their college application fees, and then were denied rightly deserved places in elite colleges because some rich f—wads cheated for their already privileged kids— I’m disgusted,” Norris tweeted Tuesday.

Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin among 50 charged in college admissions scam for unworthy kids, prosecutors say

Hollywood actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin have been charged in a nationwide college-entrance cheating scam, according to federal court records unsealed on Tuesday.

Huffman, Loughlin, and 48 other individuals — including a slew of wealthy executives and attorneys — engaged in “large-scale, elaborate fraud” to create a “rigged system” at elite American universities like Yale, Stanford, USC, and UCLA, according to prosecutors. In some cases, they allegedly used imposters to stand in for the children at exams or bribed athletic recruiters to recruit their children, even if they didn’t end up playing that sport in college.

Federal prosecutors cited one example where parents paid a $400,000 bribe to Yale’s women’s soccer coach so that their daughter could attend the school. She didn't play soccer.

The investigation is ongoing, and more parents and coaches are believed to be involved.

California lawmakers accepted $810,000 in gifts and overseas trips in 2018

California lawmakers were showered with more than $810,000 in gifts last year, many from powerful interest groups lobbying the state who handed out concert and professional sports tickets, spa treatments, gourmet dinners and trips to a dozen countries, new state reports show.

The annual economic disclosure reports shed light on how state legislators can augment their annual $110,459 salaries with gifts that allow them to travel the world and eat at expensive restaurants, often in the company of corporate executives seeking to influence their decisions in the Legislature.

“The truth is the vast majority of gifts and trips are given because the gift givers want something in return,” said Rey Lopez-Calderon, executive director of California Common Cause, a government watchdog organization. “It's not just a question of the gift giver wanting something in return, but that the public could infer that even if it's not true. There is potential for the public's faith in government to be undermined.”

A 9-year-old girl hanged herself in her Bronx home — after her mother told her it was too early in the morning to be on her cellphone, sources and neighbors said Sunday.

Heaven Vega was found dead by her horrified mom, Jennifer, in her bedroom at the family’s apartment in the Bronx River Houses shortly before noon Saturday, authorities said.

The child had tied a belt around her neck and hanged herself from her bed, police said.

The Catholic Church Is Rich Enough to Settle Sex Abuse Cases Forever

It sometimes seems as if you could rattle off a list of Catholic sex abuse scandals in perpetuity. The pope, for his part, has barely responded outside of summoning the world's bishops to the Vatican for a meeting this winter to discuss the ongoing crisis.

Considering the unlikelihood of criminal consequences for those at the clergy's top levels, and the fact that many of these sex abuse cases have far surpassed the statutes of limitations, the endgame seems increasingly a financial—that is, a civil liability—question. But can the Church settle with survivors forever? Will it ever, somehow, completely run out of money with which to do so? In settling sex abuse claims, the Church has already reportedly spent or agreed to spend at least $3 billion in the US alone, and about 20 American dioceses have filed for some kind of bankruptcy. There's little evidence that will slow down, or that the price tag won't keep climbing. (In Pennsylvania, for example, bishops said they supported a fund to compensate survivors if they could prove they were abused but, because of the statute of limitations in the state, could no longer file a lawsuit.)

Street preacher gets 27 years in 'Basement of Horrors' case

A self-proclaimed street preacher who had a role in kidnapping, torturing and enslaving mentally disabled adults chained up in a filthy basement has been sentenced to 27 years in prison.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia announced that Eddie "the Reverend Ed" Wright was sentenced Thursday for the scheme that lasted from 2001 to October 2011. He is the second of the five people charged in the case that shocked Philadelphia and the nation to be sentenced this week, after Nicklaus Woodard was also sentenced to 27 years on Tuesday.

Last month, Jean McIntosh was sentenced to 40 years prison for her role. McIntosh helped prosecutors build a case against her mother, Linda Weston, the ringleader of the group that held victims captive for years in a cramped basement in the plan to steal more than $200,000 in government benefits.

2 teens seen ignoring store clerk who collapses in front of them, stepping around him to rob register

Three males in Washington state are seen on camera ignoring a store clerk who collapsed in front of them from an apparent medical issue, with the two young ones choosing instead to step around him to rob the store.

Police in Auburn, Washington, are searching for the two young males who appear to be teenagers plus an adult man who came into the store with them prior to the incident on Saturday evening, authorities said.

The unidentified clerk is in critical condition at a hospital fighting for his life, authorities said. The man suffered a heart attack, according to ABC affiliate KOMO in Seattle.

Report: CBS Honcho Les Moonves Was Obsessed With Destroying Janet Jackson After Her Super Bowl ‘Wardrobe Malfunction’

According to a report by Huffington Post, Les Moonves, the CEO and chairman of CBS, was obsessed with destroying the career of Janet Jackson following the 2004 Super Bowl’s notorious half-time show, during which the singer’s breast was exposed, allegedly inadvertently, for nine-sixteenths of a second. According to HuffPo’s sources, Moonves did all he could to make sure her career was wrecked in a ditch.

The incident, which happened in a show produced by CBS and MTV, was explained as a “wardrobe malfunction,” and many believe that the whole thing was more the fault of Justin Timberlake. However, Moonves — who was recently accused of decades of sexual misconduct — allegedly never bought that explanation, believing that the whole thing was an intentional attempt to foment controversy and publicity by Jackson. He believed Jackson was insufficiently repentant, and, the report claims, he singled her out for vengeance.

Judge orders couple accused of blowing money meant for Good Samaritan homeless vet to appear in court

A judge Wednesday ordered a New Jersey couple who raised more than $400,000 in donations for a homeless veteran to appear in court to explain what happened to the money.

Judge Paula Dow of Burlington County Superior Court also expressed concern that Kate McClure and boyfriend Mark D'Amico, who were once considered good Samaritans for raising the money through a GoFundMe account for the destitute military vet Johnny Bobbitt Jr., will attempt to flee her jurisdiction.

Timeline: Catholic Church sex-abuse scandals in Baltimore

The Pennsylvania grand jury report on child sex abuse in the Catholic Church implicated the former archbishop of Baltimore for covering up the abuse. It’s not the first time the city has dealt with scandals within the Catholic Church. Here’s a timeline of major incidents:

June 1995: John Merzbacher, a former teacher, is convicted of rape and child sex abuse of a student at Catholic Community Middle School in Locust Point in the 1970s. More than 100 other charges of 13 other former students were dropped after a judge sentenced Merzbacher to four consecutive life terms.

Three justices now face an impeachment trial in the Senate while a fourth announced her retirement on Tuesday.

A fifth justice resigned from the top court in July.

Why Evangelical Christians Stand Behind Accused Sexual Predators

No one should be surprised if, after everything, Roy Moore still becomes the next US senator from Alabama.

In a Thursday Washington Post article, Moore, the Republican senatorial candidate in a December special election, was accused by a woman of initiating sexual contact with her when she was 14 and he was 32. This puts the Southern evangelical Christians who have supported Moore—who is so far to the right on social issues that he said in 2005 that “homosexual conduct” should be illegal—in a position to make a choice. This is a chance to draw the line and begin declaring, again, that their faith, their principles, matter more than blind partisanship.
