Hate Crimes Spiked 226% in Counties Where Trump Held Rallies

Counties where Donald Trump held rallies leading up to the 2016 presidential election saw a huge increase in hate crimes, according to a new analysis.

“We found that counties that had hosted a 2016 Trump campaign rally saw a 226 percent increase in reported hate crimes over comparable counties that did not host such a rally,” researchers Ayal Feinberg, Regina Branton, and Valerie Martinez-Ebers wrote in The Washington Post. Feinberg is a Ph.D. candidate in political science at University of North Texas, and Branton and Martinez-Ebers are professors there.

Arizona police officers forcibly removed 2-year-old boy with fever from home, video shows

An Arizona lawmaker is questioning a local police department's use of force in removing a feverish child from a home after a doctor reported the parents to the state's Department of Child Safety.

On Feb. 25, the mother of a 2-year-old child, who is not vaccinated, took the child to a naturopathic doctor with a fever of 105 degrees, ABC Phoenix station KNXV reported.

The doctor instructed the mother to take the toddler to the emergency room as soon as possible, but since the child's fever later broke, she took him back to their home in Chandler, about 25 miles southeast of Phoenix, instead, according to a statement from the Chandler Police Department.

When the doctor learned from the Cardon Children's Hospital that they parents never showed up with the child, she called Arizona DCS, who then contacted the Chandler Police Department for assistance, an incident report shows.

Transgender man claims Catholic hospital refused to perform a hysterectomy on him. Now, he’s suing.

A transgender man has filed a lawsuit against a Catholic hospital for refusing to perform a hysterectomy on him for religious reasons, Newsweek reported.

The lawsuit filed Thursday by the American Civil Liberties Union claims that St. Joseph Hospital in California discriminated against Oliver Knight because he is transgender.

"The refusal of St. Joseph to allow a doctor to perform a medically necessary procedure because the patient is transgender is discriminatory," Jessica Riggin, a lawyer who is representing Knight, said in a statement. "This is a hospital that is open to the general public so even though it's religiously affiliated, it's illegal for them to turn away someone based on gender identity. Everyone should be able to get the care they need."

High school seniors shovel neighbor's driveway at 4:30 a.m. so she could make it to her dialysis

When the weather forecast called for up to eight inches of snow in their New Jersey community, brothers Brian and Patrick Lanigan immediately thought of their neighbor Natalie Blair.

She depends on dialysis treatments -- and that meant the snowstorm could be a life or death situation.

Brian, who works as a local EMT, had shoveled the Blair family's driveway during a storm just a few days earlier, but he knew this time he would be on the job when the snowstorm struck.

It was up to his little brother Patrick to ensure their neighbor would be able to leave her house for the treatment she desperately needs.

Six Gay, Bi Men Sue USC Doctor for Sexual Battery, Harassment

The University of Southern California and a doctor recently employed there were hit with a lawsuit from six gay and bisexual men who accuse the physician of sexual battery, gender violence, sexual harassment, negligence, and fraud.

Dr. Dennis A. Kelly, who retired from USC two years ago, denies the claims, telling the Los Angeles Times that he always acted "professionally and without any other motive."

The plaintiffs allege Kelly targeted gay and bi male students, subjecting them to "demeaning and derogatory" terms and inquiring if they used sex toys and watched internet porn. The accusers — some of which attended USC between 2009 and 2014 — also said they were subjected to "intrusive and medically unnecessary rectal examinations."

This Is What Happens to Your Body if You Eat Almost No Carbs

In many ways, refined carbohydrates—bread, pasta, white rice—are like fossil fuels. They contain a lot of energy, they’re cheap to produce, and just when it seems as though supply can't keep up with demand, some technological innovation enables us to extract and produce more of them. And like fossil fuels, the scientific consensus is that an over reliance on refined carbohydrates is going to end badly.

Most people who are interested in cutting carbs out are doing so to lose weight. Anecdotal and scientific research suggests that it’s a pretty good strategy to take to drop some pounds. But carbs aren’t just in the types of food I mentioned above. They’re also hiding out in fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, milk, legumes, and plenty else. With that being the case, you can imagine that cutting your carb intake to virtually nothing would be very difficult indeed and—as you'll read in a moment—there’s research suggesting that it’s potentially dangerous. Here are some of the things that would happen if you ditched refined carbs, limited the “good” (or complex) carbs named above and opted to consume butter, bacon, and bourbon to your heart’s content.

Mom Fights Back After Nurse Body Shames Her 13-Year-Old Daughter: 'She Is Ignorant'

Julie Venn is teaching her daughters that “strong is beautiful, and weight means nothing” — so she was frustrated when a nurse body shamed her 13-year-old during her yearly checkup.

The personal trainer and mom of two went into the appointment excited to see how much her younger daughter, Riley, had grown in the past year.

“The coach in me has loved seeing her strength and size finally come along and the mom in me has loved watching this beautiful young girl begin to become a young woman,” Venn, 48, wrote in a Facebook post.

But when the nurse practitioner came into the room, Venn said that she immediately started questioning Riley — who plays softball and basketball — about her diet, exercise, sleep habits and school, before asking, “Tell me Riley, how can you explain all of this weight you’ve gained?”

Church sex abuse: Kentucky attorney general wants to investigate state Catholic dioceses

The Kentucky attorney general will seek the Legislature's permission to form a statewide grand jury to investigate Kentucky's Catholic dioceses in line with last month's damning report on Pennsylvania Catholic churches.

That report showed church leaders protected more than 300 "predator priests" for decades in six Pennsylvania dioceses because they were more interested in safeguarding the church and the abusers than in ministering to victims.

Deputy Attorney General J. Michael Brown said his office has been in contact with Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro and that his staff will "in the near future" draft legislation to put to lawmakers in Frankfort.

UK schoolgirls have been pressured by peers to have FGM, campaigner says

Some schoolgirls in the United Kingdom have been pressured by their peers into undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM), according to FGM survivor and campaigner Leyla Hussein, Britain's Press Association reported.

Hussein, who founded the Dahlia Project in 2013 to help other survivors, said that she has spoken with many young women who say they feel vulnerable to becoming a victim to a crime that is still seen by many as a cultural practice or tradition, rather than a violent sexual offense, PA said.

"Some of my clients are 19-year-old girls now who were children or were born in this (country) and they will say to you they were pressured in a playground in a school in London to go and have it done," she said.
