Chicago is the 'rattiest city' in America for the sixth year in a row

Chicago is the six-time holder of a title that no city wants.

For the sixth year in a row, Chicago is the country's "rattiest city."

The Windy City has topped the list of the rattiest cities in the United States for the sixth year in a row.

Orkin, an Atlanta-based pest control service, ranks US cities based on the number of new rodent treatments from September 1 to August 31 of each year. The result is a list of 50 cities, with most changing spots each time the list is updated. Chicago, however, is still No. 1.

"Rodents are experts at sniffing out food and shelter, and they're resilient in their ways to obtain both," Ben Hottel, an Orkin entomologist, said in the company's press release. "Residential properties offer the ideal habitat for rodents, and once they've settled in, they're capable of reproducing rapidly and in large quantities."

Efforts to tame the city's rat population have been going on for years. Chicago's "war on rats" escalated with the introduction of a new rat task force back in 2016. Residents had even begun adopting cats to squash their numbers.

Report: 29 million girls, women victims of modern slavery

A new report estimates that 29 million women and girls are victims of modern slavery, exploited by practices including forced labour, forced marriage, debt-bondage and domestic servitude.

Grace Forrest, co-founder of the Walk Free anti-slavery organisation, said Friday that means one in every 130 women and girls is living in modern slavery today, more than the population of Australia.

"The reality is that there are more people living in slavery today than any other time in human history," she told a U.N. news conference.

Walk Free defines modern slavery "as the systematic removal of a person’s freedom, where one person is exploited by another for personal or financial gain," she said.

According to the report, titled "Stacked Odds," women account for 99% of all victims of forced sexual exploitation, 84% of all victims of forced marriage, and 58% of all victims of forced labour.

Santa Ana provides new data that Orange County is ‘dumping’ homeless

Much of Orange County is transporting homeless people into Santa Ana, placing an unfair burden on that city to address the county’s homelessness crisis, city officials allege in court documents filed Monday.

The filing marks the city’s latest effort seeking legal relief over this issue. And this time, officials have some numbers and additional data that they hope will prove their point that many other cities in the county are “dumping” their homeless in Santa Ana.

“We now have better evidence that the county did not stop this practice. It’s just being done in other ways,” Santa Ana City Manager Kristine Ridge said.

Santa Ana officials and residents have long complained that they’ve become a dumping ground for the homeless.

Santa Ana officials said transfers from other communities have led to to a disproportionate number of homeless people in their city. From 2017 to 2019, homelessness in Orange County increased by 43 %; but in Santa Ana, homelessness increased by 77 %, according to the lawsuit. As of April 2019, more than 25 % of the county’s homeless lived in Santa Ana.

Native American health center asked for COVID-19 supplies. It got body bags instead.

In mid-March, as the Seattle region grappled with a coronavirus outbreak, a community health center caring for the area's Native American population made an urgent request to county, state and federal health agencies: Please send medical supplies.

What it received almost three weeks later left staff members stunned.

"My team turned ghost white," said Esther Lucero, chief executive officer of the Seattle Indian Health Board.

After employees receive threats, one city is forced to nix rule requiring face masks in businesses

An emergency proclamation requiring face masks in stores and restaurants in Stillwater, Oklahoma, was nixed after store and restaurant owners received threats.

The proclamation was issued Thursday. Among other things, the order made businesses require patrons to cover their faces to combat the spread of coronavirus.

But on Friday, Mayor Will Joyce softened the rule to encourage, not require, face coverings, after several reports emerged of employees being verbally abused and being threatened with physical violence while trying to enforce the order -- all in just three hours of the rule going into effect.

"Many of those with objections cite the mistaken belief the requirement is unconstitutional, and under their theory, one cannot be forced to wear a mask. No law or court supports this view," said City Manager Norman McNickle in a statement. "It is further distressing that these people, while exercising their believed rights, put others at risk."

McNickle went on to explain the importance of face coverings in preventing the spread of coronavirus. The masks have been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

Teenager goes ‘mental’ on mom over birthday present: ‘A few hateful words’

The Redditor started his story by explaining that he loves baking, a passion that led him to ask for a stand mixer for his birthday. He ultimately got the appliance — a white model that cost around £80 ($100) — from his uncle and immediately began using it often.

Months later, the teen went to make croissants with his mixer only to find the device was missing.

“I looked everywhere for it and couldn’t find it,” he wrote. “I asked my mom where it was and she said she gave it away to charity. I WENT MENTAL.”

The 15-year-old wrote that he then confronted his mom with “a few hateful words.” His mother said that the mixer didn’t match the color scheme in the house and, as part of her kitchen, was hers to do what she wanted with.

A damning investigation reveals Clearview AI’s deep ties to white supremacists

We already knew there were some ties between creepy facial-recognition software company Clearview AI and the alt-right, but a damning and extensive exposé by Luke O’Brien at HuffPost details just how extensive the connections are between it and prominent white supremacists. It turns out Clearview AI CEO Hoan Ton-That has an extensive network of xenophobic, anti-Semitic, homophobic, and racist buddies, many of whom he's been hanging out with since at least 2015, when the precursor to Clearview AI, a service called SmartChekr, was still a work in progress.

QUESTIONABLE COMPANY — The HuffPost piece posits that in addition Richard Schwartz and Ton-That, Smartchekr’s founders also included Pax Dickinson and Chuck Johnson. All were active on a Slack channel for the now-defunct, white supremacist crowdfunding site WeSearchr. In an exchange on the channel, Ton-That used a Chinese slur in reference to Representative Judy Chu. Ton-That also reportedly socialized with Johnson frequently, and attended at least one dinner with Richard Spencer.

In a statement to The Verge and HuffPost, Ton-That denied that any of this suggests he's a racist himself, or that he should be judged for the company he keeps
