Fla. Man Gets Death Sentence for Murdering 9-Year-Old Girl Left in His Care by Babysitter

A Florida man has been sentenced to death for the 2014 rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl left in his care.

On Friday morning, Hillsborough Circuit Judge Michelle Sisco sentenced Granville Ritchie to death for the May 16, 2014, murder of 9-year-old Felecia Williams, report Fox13, WWSB and the Tampa Bay Times.

"The child victim suffered a horrendous, physically painful, psychologically torturous death," Sisco said in court on Friday.

Sisco addressed the grieving mother, telling her, "I've thought long and hard about what I was going to say to you. First, I am in awe of your bravery and your tireless advocacy for your daughter. And the fact that you were able to sit through this trial with the horrific facts. You're a better, stronger woman than I am. That is true.

‘That Little Baby Needs Justice’: Body Of Toddler Found Floating In Bayou, Foul Play Suspected

The body of a 2-year-old girl, who disappeared from a Houston playground last week, was found submerged in a bayou over the weekend.

Maliyah “Tootie” Bass’ body is believed to have been found floating in the water on Sunday after vanishing a day earlier. The body was spotted by a jogger around 10:30 a.m. investigators said. The unresponsive child, who was rescued from the water, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“I’m highly confident that foul play is involved in this case,” Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said in a statement.

Missing Fort Hood soldier a victim of 'abusive sexual contact,' Army says

Sgt. Elder Fernandes, 23, a Fort Hood soldier who has been missing for five days, was recently transferred to a different unit because he was the victim of "abusive sexual contact," U.S. Army officials said Saturday.

"We can confirm there is an open investigation of abusive sexual contact involving Sgt. Fernandes," Lt. Col. Chris Brautigam, a 1st Cavalry Division spokesman, said in a statement to NBC News.

"The unit sexual assault response coordinator has been working closely with Sgt. Fernandes, ensuring he was aware of all his reporting, care, and victim advocacy options," he said.

Brautigam said Fernandes was transferred "to ensure he received the proper care and ensure there were no opportunities for reprisals."

As murders soar in Chicago, judges are freeing more violent-crime suspects on electronic monitoring

The number of criminal defendants freed on bail and ordered to wear electronic-monitoring bracelets has soared this year in Cook County, including more than 1,000 people charged with murder, robbery or illegal possession of guns, a Chicago Sun-Times analysis has found.

Police Supt. David Brown says many of those being set free on electronic monitoring are responsible for the steep rise in killings this year in Chicago.

On Aug. 9, 43 people facing murder charges were in the county’s electronic-monitoring program — 40% more than on the same day last year.

Also in the program were 160 people charged with robbery and about 1,000 charged with illegal gun possession — twice as many for those crimes as on Aug. 9, 2019.

Mayor Lightfoot calls violence against the city’s children personal, as one person is charged in weekend shooting death of 7-year-old girl

Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Monday said she wants “all of us to feel this loss” after another weekend of violence in Chicago yet again took a toll on the city’s children, including the killing of a 7-year-old girl.

Lightfoot said she outlined an “all hands on deck” strategy on Thursday to head off another weekend of bloodshed, a plan that included police and street outreach groups. And yet, “we still saw a four-day weekend of 87 Chicagoans shot, 17 Chicagoans killed, and two of them children. Our children,” the mayor said at a news briefing.

5 retired priests arrested after allegations they sexually assaulted minors

The abuse is alleged to have occurred while the men were teachers at a high school in Rigaud and at two institutions in Matane and Pohénégamook.

In 2016, the religious order agreed to a $30-million payment to students who attended the Montreal Institute for the Deaf.

In 2012, a number of former students said they were sexually assaulted by priests who worked there.

At least 60 deaf students were assaulted by members of the religious community and lay people working at the school between 1940 and 1982. The school changed its name to the Institut Raymond-Dewar in 1984.

About 270 alleged victims have joined a class action lawsuit against the order.

Turkish president Erdogan backs Muslim cleric who claims ‘evil’ homosexuals spread disease: ‘He’s absolutely right’

Ali Erbas, who is the head of Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), used a sermon at the start of Ramadan on Friday to call on people to “work together” against homosexuality.

He said: “Islam curses homosexuality. Homosexuality brings with it illnesses and decay to lineage. Let’s work together to protect people from such evil.”

The inflammatory remarks were condemned by LGBT+ and human rights groups, but this has only prompted a bigger row in the country – with anti-LGBT+ figures rushing out to defend the state official.

The pandemic isn't changing crime like you'd expect

Whatever you expect the COVID-19 pandemic to do to crime rates, it's probably not doing that.

Well, not exactly. There's no single story of coronavirus and crime. Some types of crime are increasing during the pandemic, while other crime rates are falling. Crime is up in some places and down in others. It will be tempting, not least for me, to cherry-pick coronavirus-era data to "prove" how our justice system should or shouldn't change, yet as with so much of the pandemic information available to us, right now caution is more warranted than certainty.

By far the most frequent headline claim about crime rates during the COVID-19 outbreak is that they're falling. That's not wrong, but neither is it complete. A USA Today survey of 20 police departments found all but one saw criminal incidents decline in the first two weeks of March as social distancing began. Further analysis of "crime data published by 53 law enforcement agencies in two dozen states" reinforced that trend, USA Today reported, finding law enforcement "logged dramatically fewer calls for service, crime incidents, and arrests" in those two weeks than in the six weeks prior. Residential burglary, robbery, assault, and murder all decreased. (Miami has not had a homicide in six weeks, for example, a record since 1964.)

But some falling crime rates aren't necessarily attributable to change in public behavior. Shifts in policing practice are rather responsible. COVID-19 is spreading within some police departments (notably, New York, Chicago, and Detroit), and in some cities, officers have been directed to avoid unnecessary contact with the public.

Indian woman gang raped after quarantined alone in school: police

An Indian woman was allegedly gang raped in a school in the desert state of Rajasthan where she had been quarantined for a night by the police amid the nationwide coronavirus lockdown, a police official said on Sunday.

The incident occurred last week when the victim, a daily wage earner, sought shelter at a police station after walking alone for miles and losing the way to her native village.

In the absence of a quarantine centre, local police housed her for the night in a school building, where she was allegedly raped by three men.
