Report alleges sex abuse by 40 Vermont priests since 1950

A report released Thursday by Vermont's Roman Catholic Church found there were "credible and substantiated" allegations of the sexual abuse of minors against 40 priests in the state since 1950.

All but one of those allegations occurred prior to 2000, and none of the priests is still in ministry, the report said. Most of the priests who were named in the report are now dead.

"While most of these allegations took place at least a generation ago, the numbers are still staggering," said Bishop Christopher Coyne, who leads the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington, which covers the entire state.

Mexican women are angry about rape, murder and government neglect — and they want the world to know

Wearing green bandannas and dousing police in pink glitter, Mexican women on Aug. 16 staged a furious protest in Mexico City after a 17-year-old girl reported being raped by four police officers earlier in the month.

Officials have sent mixed signals about ongoing investigations of the case, and Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum triggered fury among feminists when she said there would be no “fabrication of suspects.”

The alleged police rape has hit a nerve in Mexico, where women face extremely high rates of violence and incessant catcalling.

Another teen girl was reported being raped by a Mexico City policeman days before the women’s march, which drew an estimated 2,000 people and included both violent property destruction and wrenching tributes to Mexico’s missing women and girls.

With 1,812 women murdered between January and July this year — about 10 a day — Mexico is Latin America’s second-most dangerous country for women, after Brazil, according to the United Nations. More than 200 Mexican women have been kidnapped so far in 2019.

'Wonderful' Michigan Girl, 9, Is Mauled to Death by 3 Dogs, and Pet Owner Is Arrested

A 9-year-old girl riding her bike near her family’s Detroit home died after an attack by three pit pulls Monday afternoon, after the girl’s father said he’d warned the dogs’ owner that his fence was too flimsy to hold back the animals.

“We had an argument about it just last week and he just didn’t take care of his dogs properly. He could have prevented this,” the father, Armando Hernandez, told Detroit radio station WWJ.

The girl, Emma Valentina Hernandez, was taken to Children’s Hospital of Michigan and died from her injuries in what the Wayne County medical examiner ruled was an accident, reports The Detroit News.

Trans Woman Tracy Single Murdered in Houston

Transgender woman Tracy Single has been murdered in Houston, making her death the 16th known homicide of a trans American this year, with all but one victim being Black women.

She was found dead in a gas station parking lot July 30, but she wasn’t identified publicly until later. It took a week for the Houston Police’s LGBT liaison to confirm that she was a trans woman, and activist Dee Dee Watters organized a town hall meeting last Sunday that led to Single being identified by name, the blog TransGriot reports. She was 22. How she died has not been reported, but local news reports said her death was a homicide.

Parents protest vulgar anti-LGBTQ priest appointed to teach pre-teens at Catholic school

Rev. Erik Richtsteig is supposed to become a new youth pastor working with kids ages four to 15 in Salt Lake City’s Catholic schools. But more than 150 parents have signed a petition opposing his appointment after discovering his anti-LGBTQ and misogynist social media posts.

According to New York Daily News:

“In a post on Facebook, the paper noted, the priest said that images shared by LGBTQ individuals in June (Pride month) looked ‘like a gnome vomited.’

He also would not accept any friend requests from people who had a rainbow filter over their picture.”

He has reportedly also followed Facebook pages with titles like, “Male feminists are p*ssies,” “Right wing extremist” and “Obama has to go.”

Father who killed his son because he was gay let out of jail after two years behind bars

A father who is accused of killing his own son for being gay has been placed on house arrest. Now the victim’s mother is speaking out.

In 2017, Giovanni Melton, 17, was shot and killed in Henderson, Nevada. His father Wendell Melton was arrested because police believed that he was responsible for the murder.

Playing video games does not make you a mass shooter, expert says

During a speech on Monday addressing the recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, President Trump call for an end to — or substantial reduction of — the "glorification" of violence in "gruesome and grisly" video game culture. While some are quick to blame video games for real-life acts of violence, experts say there is no such link.

"When it comes to actual serious criminal violence, there's virtually no evidence that video games matter," James Ivory, professor and research director at Virginia Tech, told CBS News.

Ivory has researched the social and psychological dimensions of media, particularly the content and effects of video games. He says he's determined that a lot of things influence violent crime — but the media we consume is not one of them.

Kiki Fantroy Is 13th Black Trans Woman Reportedly Murdered in 2019

According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, Kiki Fantroy was murdered on Wednesday morning. While they do not believe the murder was a hate crime, Fantroy’s mother has publicly speculated that she was targeted because of her gender identity. Fantroy’s sister is reportedly also skeptical about this news.

According to the Miami Herald, Fantroy was killed during an argument and found near an abandoned home. Her mother says she was returning home from a party with friends when this happened. Police have since distributed fliers and the local Crime Stoppers is offering $3,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the murderer. Police have said that there was a group of people nearby the shooting.

Florida Diner Wrote Anti-Gay Message on Bill in Place of Tip Before Stuffing It Down Female Manager’s Blouse

A diner in St. Augustine, Florida was arrested for battery after he wrote an anti-gay message on his restaurant bill in place of a tip, and then ripped it up and stuffed it down the female manager’s blouse when confronted.

According to the Naples Daily News, Smith wrote “if he wasn’t gay” in the tip line of the receipt along with a big zero for a tip. The waiter showed it to the manager, and she confronted Smith outside. Smith took the bill from her, tore it up, grabbed her collar, and shoved it down her blouse, touching her breast.

Mexican singer says he was trafficked and abused as a teenager

Luis Armando Campos says singing is his life. At 23, he's already had a very impressive singing career that started when he was just a child in his native Tampico, a port city in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

"I was about 11, almost 12, when I first appeared on a local TV show in Tampico," Campos said.

In 2014, he was a semi-finalist in "The Voice Mexico." The international reality singing competition franchise took his career to new levels. Even though he didn't win, Campos has since toured Mexico with his music. But what his increasing number of fans didn't know, Campos says, is that while his career was taking off, he was forced to live a double life -- as a sex slave.

Mother of boy found in Denver storage unit pleads to abuse

A mother pleaded guilty Thursday to child abuse resulting in the death of her 7-year-old son whose body was found in a Denver storage unit, in a deal requiring her cooperation with prosecutors who have charged the boy's father with murder.

The plea agreement approved by a judge recommends that Elisha Pankey spend between 16 and 32 years in prison. Prosecutors said she will not be sentenced until after the trial of her husband, Leland Pankey.

Elisha Pankey, 43, did not speak during the brief court appearance aside from answering a judge's questions about her understanding of the agreement.

Previously released court documents revealed she began cooperating with investigators two months after she was charged. The mother told investigators in March that her husband physically abused Caden McWilliams and was not feeding the boy.

Pet Dog Mauls Elderly Man, Bites Off Arm Flesh Leaving Bone Exposed

A dog mauled an elderly man and ripped off a "chunk of his arm," leaving his bone exposed during the savage attack. The incident took place last week in a park in Derby, England.

Charles Brown, 82, was left bleeding after the attack carried out by a "black, muscular Labrador." According to local media reports, the owner of the dog fled the scene when it attacked the man.

"He’s had his injections, you’ll be fine," the owner said as he ran from the site. Brown managed to call wife Ann, 74, who rushed him to a nearby hospital. Doctors told him he would require a skin graft to repair the damage.

"The force of the dog was indescribable and it knocked me over onto my back. My lower body is all bruised, my back is twisted, and the flesh of my arm was nowhere to be seen... I don’t know if the dog ate it or not, but it was gone, I remember laying in bed that evening and noticing how much flesh was gone," Brown said, according to U.K.'s Metro.
