American Parentxs Are Way Too Focused on Their Kidxs’ Self-Esteem

American parents today are also quick to protect their kids from disappointment and failure. We give participation trophies when kids don’t win first place; we fly into the school to deliver kids’ forgotten homework. But these well-meaning interventions backfire because a child with healthy self-esteem is a child who has learned, through experience, that he can overcome obstacles and disappointment. He’s had the opportunity to fail and has discovered that failing doesn’t preclude him from being loved.

California’s state travel ban covers one-third of America

“Ohio’s decision to condone attacks on the health of its nearly 400,000 LGBTQ+ residents was widely opposed by the state’s medical community. It’s plain that this law only serves to discriminate,” said Assemblyman Evan Low, D-Campbell, who wrote California’s travel ban law. “We will never put Californians at risk of falling victim to the same toxic standard by supporting the use of taxpayer dollars for travel in places where anti-LGBTQ discrimination is the law of the land.”

Parents Are Not Okay

School is only just starting and already kids are being quarantined in mind-boggling numbers: 20,000 across the state of Mississippi, 10,000 in a single district in Tampa, Florida. They’re getting sick too, with hospitalizations of kids under 17 across the country up at least 22 percent in the past month, by the CDC’s count, and each new week sets pediatric hospitalization records for the entire pandemic. The rapid increase of COVID-19 cases among kids has shattered last year’s oft-repeated falsehood that kids don’t get COVID-19, and if they do, it’s not that bad. It was a convenient lie that was easy to believe in part because we kept most of our kids home. With remote learning not an option now, this year we’ll find out how dangerous this virus is for children in the worst way possible.

It’s enough to bring a parent to tears, except that every parent I know ran out a long time ago—I know I did. Ran out of tears, ran out of energy, ran out of patience. Through these grinding 18 months, we’ve managed our kids’ lives as best we could while abandoning our own. It was unsustainable then, it’s unsustainable now, and no matter what fresh hell this school year brings, it’ll still be unsustainable.

Black bear attacks couple and their dog

The man and woman, who live locally, were having a picnic on a grassy hill when they were alerted by their dog's barking that a bear was nearby, said Leesa Brandon, parkway spokesperson.

The dog, which was not on a leash, ran toward the bear while barking loudly.

Two black bears are killed and another two injured after being hit by cars in Yosemite National Park - after park closures during coronavirus lockdowns led wildlife to freely roam the roads

Two black bears have been killed and another two injured after being hit by cars in Yosemite National Park in the last three weeks alone, after park closures during coronavirus lockdowns led wildlife to freely roam the roads in recent months.

Rangers are begging visitors to California's sprawling park to slow down after the four bears were struck by vehicles leaving at least two of the creatures dead.

The two other bears were seriously injured after vehicles speeding faster than the 25 mph limit plowed into them, according to the National Park Service's Bear Team Blog.

Flight Attendant Spills Hot Tea On Passenger, Hawaiian Airlines Sued

A lawsuit has been filed against Hawaiian Airlines by an Australian woman, who claimed she sustained scars after a flight attendant knocked a cup of hot tea on her lap.

Dimity Plaister, 47, from the Gold Coast, Brisbane, was flying from her hometown to Honolulu, in April 2017, when the incident allegedly occurred. According to court documents obtained by News.com, a crew member on the flight accidentally knocked a cardboard cup of black tea, which was on the plaintiff’s food tray, while passing a carton of milk to her co-passenger. The cup of scalding tea landed on Plaister’s lap, drenching her clothes and burning her skin.

“As a result of the incident, the applicant suffered burns to her hip, thigh and buttocks as well as psychological injury,” the statement of claim read.

She was “not offered medical treatment or assistance by cabin crew to dry her lap or ease her pain,” even after she had alerted in-flight crew of the incident, Plaister claimed.

Electric scooter use results in 20 injuries per 100,000 trips, CDC finds

People are getting injured while riding electric scooters. This shouldn’t come as a huge shock to anyone who has noticed the explosion of dockless, shareable two-wheelers over the last year and a half. But the degree to which people are breaking bones and sustaining head injuries is alarming public health officials who released a major study into scooter-related injuries on Thursday.

The study, which was conducted by the Public Health and Transportation departments in Austin, Texas, in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), identified a total of 271 people with potential scooter-related injuries from September 5th through November 30th, 2018. The study was presented by the CDC at its Epidemic Intelligence Service conference in Atlanta.

ALMOST HALF OF THE INJURED RIDERS SUSTAINED HEAD INJURIES

During the study period, there were a total of 182,333 hours of e-scooter use, 891,121 miles ridden on e-scooters, and 936,110 e-scooter trips. The research team calculated that there were 20 individuals injured per 100,000 e-scooter trips taken during the three-month period.

Extreme Turbulence Leaves 30 Passengers Hospitalized and Flight Attendant with Broken Leg

Passengers on board a recent flight from Istanbul to New York were close to landing when their flight encountered severe turbulence.

According to ABC News, a Turkish Airlines Boeing 777 carrying 329 people, including 21 crew members, was flying over Maine, about 45 minutes from their final destination, when they ran into a patch of very bumpy air

“It kind of jolted pretty quickly,” passenger Amir Mehrbakhsh told ABC News. “There was like one or two seconds when it was subtle, but then it really started to pick up. … Just because the drop was so sudden, a lot of people got lifted up and hit their head either on the ceiling or on the side of the plane, and so there were a lot of injuries pretty quickly.”

Most of the AV Accidents in California Are Caused By Human Drivers

PROBLEM CAUSERS. Want to ensure an autonomous vehicle (AV) doesn’t get into an accident? Get pesky humans out of the way.

That’s the takeaway from a new report by Axios, anyway. After looking at all the incident reports filed with State of California Department of Motor Vehicles between 2014 and 2018, the company found that people were responsible for 81 of the 88 accidents involving AVs.
