No More ‘Minnesota Nice’: New COVID Ad Campaign Aims To Get In Your Face

Minnesota’s major hospitals and healthcare systems are stepping up their urgency ahead of Thanksgiving this week with a messaging campaign that declares “There’s no more time to be ‘Minnesota Nice.'”

The campaign is called “Fight COVID MN.”

“We need to pull this lever, which is a little bit more in your face,” said Dr. Rahul Koranne, the president and CEO of the Minnesota Hospital Association.

One of the first two posters shows a healthcare worker in PPE with text that says, “We’re not the front line. You are. We’re your last chance.”

The other reads, “We’re sure it’s good, but is Grandma’s pumpkin pie really to die for?”

“I think it’s time to get pretty aggressive,” said Dr. Omobosola Akinsete, HealthPartners’s chair of infectious diseases.

Single mother, 25, working at Omaha sports bar is fired for posting video of Gov. Pete Ricketts talking to a group of people without a face mask

A single mother working at a sports bar has been fired for posting a video of Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts maskless and dining with a group of people amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Karina Montanez, of Omaha, Nebraska, was working her shift at DJ Dugout on Election Night when she spotted a maskless Gov. Ricketts laughing and conversing with at least seven women.

The cellphone footage shows Ricketts, donning a suit and no mask, speaking to the group of adults and small children in the back of the restaurant.

At one point, Ricketts appears to wipe his nose before taking hold of a small infant and cradling it in his arms.

'Hey, Pete, where’s your mask? Where’s your mask, Pete?' Montanez says. 'What are you doing, Pete? We’re in a pandemic, Pete.'

British mum sells her house to cover legal fees after losing custody of her child for supporting their transition

The parents lost custody of their trans kids through rulings made by judges sitting at family courts, which in the UK handle a variety of cases that can determine the future of children. These include situations where there are parental disputes over the way children are brought up, when a local authority has intervened to protect children, custody proceedings as a result of divorce, determining financial support for children after their parents’ relationship ended, some domestic-violence issues and adoption cases.

THE LGBTQ MOVEMENT FALTERED

LGBTQ acceptance is eroding even among young people. What are we going to do about it?

By Adam Zivo

There is some very bad news that not nearly enough people are talking about. Acceptance of the LGBTQ community is significantly declining in the United States and has been for several years now. Almost two years ago, a national annual survey by GLAAD found that, since 2016, Americans have become much more uncomfortable with LGBTQ folks. Though the report has since become slightly dated, little research has been done on the issue since. Other statistics, such as consistent increases in anti-LGBTQ hate crimes, suggest that the problem has not abated and may even be getting worse.

Despite the seriousness of this issue, there appears to be little awareness within the LGBTQ community that its public support is eroding. This ignorance within the wider community is mirrored by a lack of serious analysis by queer leaders and researchers. That needs to change.

And let’s not fool ourselves that this is a US-only problem. While it’s unclear how much this backlash is mirrored in Canada and Western Europe (which share similar historical trajectories on LGBTQ rights), both of these regions have also seen notable increases in anti-LGBTQ hate crimes – so there is good reason to be pessimistic. However, only real research focused on social attitudes will give us clarity. For whatever reason, this research isn’t being done in earnest.

Morgan Wallen, singer 'SNL' booted for maskless partying, calls out 'hypocrisy' of election celebrations

Morgan Wallen is among the country singers who say they're ready to start booking concerts again — spurred by the sight of election celebrations that took place across America this weekend.

"The hypocrisy is unreal," Wallen wrote on Instagram on Sunday, after sharing footage of the crowd gathered at Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C.

"Time to start booking shows...If you don't agree with me, fine. We can still be friends. But I have a family, band, and crew that need to be provided for and taken care of. If it's OK for us to party in the streets with no 'social distancing' then we can book shows right now."

Donald Trump 'is planning mass rallies where he will brandish the obituaries of dead people he claims voted' as his legal team prepares for 'man-to-man combat'

Donald Trump is planning a series of rallies at which he will show off obituaries of people who his team say have voted, according to a report.

The president has made it clear that he does not intend to concede defeat to Joe Biden, despite him being judged by independent media analysts to have no way of winning the election.

He has promised to fight every step through the courts.

On Sunday night Axios reported that the Trump campaign was mobilizing its troops and readying for war.

'We want to make sure we have an adequate supply of manpower on the ground for man-to-man combat,' one adviser told Axios.

I've always loved fried chicken. But the racism surrounding it shamed me

Growing up as a black kid in England’s white West Country, a car trip east to the busier, more exciting parts of the country meant one thing: KFC on the way back.

No matter how thrilling the purpose of our trip, the promise of salty, greasy chicken on our return would be the highlight of our day. My brother and I would get excited in the back seat just as the colonel’s bright face was due to make an appearance on the horizon. We knew what was coming.

“Shall we?” Dad would ask, as if it were a question and not an inevitability. Mum would nod, and soon enough I’d be savouring my two pieces of chicken – leg, if I was lucky. I can still smell the sharpness of the lemon hand wipe that would clean me up afterwards.

Back then, I was not even conscious of the racist baggage fried chicken came with in the US. But it was seeping into my subconscious, and I felt it.

As with most things, what happens in the US winds its way over to the UK. Including, it turns out, racist tropes. In my day job as a writer on a national newspaper – my supper clubs then were still a hobby – I sat next to someone who would often crack the same joke when I stood up to go for lunch. “What you getting?” he’d grin. “Fried chicken?”

Queer-inclusive restaurant warns customers not to enter with ‘symptoms of racism, homophobia or transphobia’

After Wee Mexico shuttered due to COVID-19 earlier this year, the store reopened with a new sign which read: “We’re back! Please do not enter if you have symptoms of COVID-19, racism, homophobia [or] transphobia.”

The general manager of Wee Mexico, Ben Wyatt, told the Evening Telegraph that the sign was in response to LGBT+ patrons being targeted in the past by hateful customers.

Santa Ana provides new data that Orange County is ‘dumping’ homeless

Much of Orange County is transporting homeless people into Santa Ana, placing an unfair burden on that city to address the county’s homelessness crisis, city officials allege in court documents filed Monday.

The filing marks the city’s latest effort seeking legal relief over this issue. And this time, officials have some numbers and additional data that they hope will prove their point that many other cities in the county are “dumping” their homeless in Santa Ana.

“We now have better evidence that the county did not stop this practice. It’s just being done in other ways,” Santa Ana City Manager Kristine Ridge said.

Santa Ana officials and residents have long complained that they’ve become a dumping ground for the homeless.

Santa Ana officials said transfers from other communities have led to to a disproportionate number of homeless people in their city. From 2017 to 2019, homelessness in Orange County increased by 43 %; but in Santa Ana, homelessness increased by 77 %, according to the lawsuit. As of April 2019, more than 25 % of the county’s homeless lived in Santa Ana.

Racist Verbal Attack on 3 Black Women at California Beach Caught on Video

Three Black women say they were out for a morning run at Dockweiler State Beach in Playa Del Rey when they were subjected to a racist verbal attack.

Footage of a portion of the Sunday incident, which has gone viral, shows the woman in question on the phone in an attempt to get police on the scene.

"I need a paramedic," she's heard saying. "I need an ambulance. My environment has been harmed by this African Black person. … This African, Black lies!" The woman then claims that she was "just attacked" from behind, with the women heard swiftly correcting her.

Donald Trump says Joe Biden is 'rushing out of his basement early' to campaign in response to poll showing the president winning nationwide and surging in battleground states

Donald Trump has mocked Joe Biden for 'coming out of the basement earlier than his hoped', after polls showed the president ahead in key battleground states.

Biden will campaign on Monday in Pennsylvania - a swing state vital for victory

In a series of Sunday evening tweets, the president celebrated recent polling, which suggests he is on course to defeat his Democrat rival.

Painters In Kenosha Are Covering Up Black Lives Matter Messages With Murals About “Love” And “Unity”

Deshauntis stepped outside and surveyed the scene in his hometown. In the aftermath of days of protests over the police shooting of a Black man, dozens of people had come to paint the city’s boarded-up downtown in bright, colorful murals. A man was singing folk music. A local church was handing out big cups of free strawberry lemonade.

"I see the effort," Deshauntis said, tightly. He added, "I don’t really see a lot of Black people out here."

And the murals — they didn’t say “Black Lives Matter.” The message across all of downtown Kenosha, where some buildings had been scorched during the protests and others reduced to still-smoking rubble, was about love. That’s what people were painting almost everywhere: “Love is the answer.”

“I support the protests,” John, who like other people interviewed for this story asked not to have his last name used, told BuzzFeed News. “I do not support the violence and the anarchy.”

He pointed, though, to the words “No Justice, No Peace,” a common rallying cry of the Black Lives Matter movement. “I totally disagree with this,” he said. “That’s not the way it goes. Justice and peace I agree with, but when it’s worded this way, that is not the way to handle it. Otherwise we’ll continue to have anarchy.”

'I am not a superwoman': Guardian readers on being childfree (or not)

How things are set up makes it an utterly shit gig for women. The last time I even considered marrying was 14 years ago. I’d been dating a guy for a few months (who had three kids I’d been cooking for). One day I found myself in his bathroom cleaning the toilet. It was like being slapped awake. How did I get here? I called him into the bathroom and he laughed, genuinely delighted, and said: I knew if I let it get nasty enough you’d clean it! He was serious. It was in that moment I realized what the marriage/kids gig really was: ceaseless servitude. – Kay, North Carolina

Over the years, I have been amazed at the outright rude comments made about my choice. A nurse once told me directly that my marriage would never be a real family because I had no children. People who have traveled a traditional path often seem to feel so threatened by those who choose a different route. Why would they care about my choice, when I certainly don’t care about theirs? – Marie, Tennessee

I was eight years old when I made the decision that I was never going to have children. As a mixed-ethnicity person in a predominantly white town I had just been racially abused, and right there I made the decision I would never bring a child into this world to face that abuse. – Natalie, England

Trader Joe's disagrees any of its ethic food brands are racist amid calls to change packaging

While Trader Joe's says it plans to change some of the names and packaging of several of its ethnic food brands, the grocer said it doesn't believe the names are racist.

The company says it has been labeling some of its ethnic foods with variations of "Joe" for decades, including Trader Ming’s, which is used to brand the chain’s Chinese foods, Trader José's for Mexican foods, "Arabian Joe” for Middle Eastern foods, “Trader Giotto’s” for Italian foods and “Trader Joe San” for Japanese cuisine.

Trader Joe's rebuffed reports that a small Change.org petition calling on the company to "removing racist packaging" was what prompted officials to take action.

"We want to be clear: we disagree that any of these labels are racist," the company said a new statement shared with USA TODAY on Tuesday. "We do not make decisions based on petitions. ... If we feel there is need for change, we do not hesitate to take action."
