Georgia Legislator, Arrested At Work, Says She Was ‘Singled Out As A Black Female Senator’

Georgia state Sen. Nikema Williams (D-Atlanta) was arrested along with more than a dozen other protesters at the Georgia State Capitol on Tuesday afternoon at a demonstration asking the state to “count every vote” from last week’s gubernatorial election. Protesters shouted “Let her go!” as Williams was handcuffed while the General Assembly was in session.

Williams, a civil rights advocate who organized domestic workers for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, was charged with misdemeanor obstruction of justice and spent about six hours at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta.

“There are countless Georgians who cast their ballots and still don’t feel like their voices are heard,” she said in a statement after being released. “I joined them down on the floor, and I was singled out as a Black female senator standing in the rotunda with constituents.”

Andrew Gillum Shreds Donald Trump With Just 3 Little Words

The winner of Florida’s gubernatorial race is still up in the air, but even if he loses, Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum can take pride in at least one thing: he bested Donald Trump on Twitter.

And he only needed three words to do it.

On Monday, the president argued that the Florida election should be called in favor of Republicans Ron DeSantis and Rick Scott even though doing so would buck the state’s recount procedures.

However, he came out on top with his response to Trump’s conspiratorial tweet.

Rihanna to President Trump: Please Do Stop My Music at Campaign Rally

President Trump’s use of popular music has landed him in hot water again, this time with Rihanna.

The superstar singer took to Twitter to protest the fact that her song “Don’t Stop the Music” was reportedly played at a campaign rally Sunday for Republican Senate candidate Marsha Blackburn in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Sunday.

Washington Post White House bureau chief Philip Rucker tipped Rihanna off that her hit song had made an appearance at the event.

“[Neither] me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies,” Rihanna tweeted back at Rucker.

The Gerrymandered Campus

Are you ever confused about where you should vote? Do you worry whether your vote counts? Reporter Kamaya Truitt looks at the strange case of North Carolina A&T State University, which state legislators divided into two congressional districts. Student activists say it’s a case of gerrymandering to split the Black vote. They’re mobilizing to make sure their voices are heard.

Symone D. Sanders On "Why We Must Vote!"

On August 22, 1964, Fannie Lou Hamer went before the Democratic National Committee to insist that the Mississippi Freedom Party, an organization she started to help African-Americans register to vote, be seated to integrate the all-White Mississippi delegation to the Democratic National Convention.

Then President Lyndon B. Johnson tried to silence Hamer. His aides and allies pressured her not to speak, and in a final effort to keep her from being heard, President Johnson called an impromptu press conference so her words would not be televised.

Fortunately, his plan to distract reporters backfired: Hamer’s 13-minute testimony detailing the inequities visited upon Black people who just wanted to vote in the land they called home was aired later that evening on prime time.

Hamer was a political force who would not be ignored. A local leader who thought globally, she knew she could not afford to sit back and let the injustices of her time go unchallenged and unchecked.

CHRIS EVANS SLAMS DONALD TRUMP IN MOCKING TWEET: ‘NO ONE HAS EVER BEEN TREATED SO UNFAIRLY’

“There’s nothing more maddening than debating someone who doesn’t know history, doesn’t read books, and frames their myopia as virtue,” Evans tweeted. “The level of unapologetic conjecture I’ve encountered lately isn’t just frustrating, it’s retrogressive, unprecedented and absolutely terrifying.”

We already have all of the information we need to impeach Trump

There’s no need to wait for secret tapes or the conclusion to the Russia investigation, says Ron Fein, co-author of “The Constitution Demands It: The Case for the Impeachment of Donald Trump.” Congress already has all of the evidence it needs to start impeachment proceedings.

Read the full transcript of Obama’s fiery anti-Trump speech

Barack Obama is done holding back.

The former president unloaded on President Trump — by name — and Republicans in Congress during a blistering speech at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on Friday, urging students in the audience to vote in an election he called a turning point.

“It did not start with Donald Trump,” Obama said. “He is a symptom, not the cause.” But he went on to criticize Trump and Republicans in Congress at length, calling out coziness with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Trump’s tweets about the Justice Department investigating Republicans, the president’s reluctance to criticize Nazi sympathizers after the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, and more.

“Republicans who know better in Congress — and they’re there, they’re quoted saying, Yeah, we know this is kind of crazy — are still bending over backward to shield this behavior from scrutiny or accountability,” he said.

A rush transcript of Obama’s remarks is below...

A man put up an electric fence near a school bus stop to keep kids off his lawn

A Virginia man took "you kids get off of my lawn" to new levels by putting up an electric fence near a spot where students wait for the school bus.

Bryan Tucker said he erected the fence Tuesday because he had trouble last year with kids trespassing and littering on his property.
"They don't respect other peoples' land," Tucker told CNN affiliate WTVR. "I pick up trash every day."
He said the "No Trespassing" signs he has posted on his property for years haven't helped.

BEN SHAPIRO: WHY IN THE NAME OF GOD IS THE MEDIA PROTECTING POPE FRANCIS? / OPINION

In 2003, The Boston Globe won a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting on a massive sex abuse cover-up inside the Roman Catholic Church, led by the archdiocese of Boston. The Pulitzer board praised the newspaper’s “courageous, comprehensive coverage of sexual abuse by priests, an effort that pierced secrecy, stirred local, national and international reaction and produced changes in the Roman Catholic Church.” Hollywood made the Oscar-winning movie Spotlight about the effort.

In 2018, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, former Vatican ambassador to the United States, released an 11-page memo alleging that Pope Francis and other top members of the Vatican had reinstated Cardinal Theodore McCarrick to a public position despite credible allegations of sexual abuse of seminarians and minors. The memo rocked the Catholic Church; Pope Francis refused to comment; other sources came forward to back Vigano’s claims.

Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago made the near-unbelievable claim that Pope Francis shouldn’t comment, since he has “a bigger agenda. He’s got to get on with other things, of talking about the environment and protecting migrants and carrying on the work of the church. We’re not going to go down a rabbit hole on this.”

So, did the press leap to investigate Vigano’s claims? Did they demand answers from Pope Francis? Did we see the same type of courageous, comprehensive coverage of Francis’ activities that we saw from the Globe team circa 2003? Of course not.

Jimmy Carter Attacks Donald Trump's Character Amid Calls for Impeachment: 'He's a Disaster'

Former President Jimmy Carter says he has been taught to value truthfulness — and that is one of the primary reasons he does not support the presidency of Donald Trump.

The retired peanut farmer, 93, has been less vocal than other former commanders in chief about the goings-on in the White House, but in a recent interview with The Washington Post, Carter seared Trump’s policies and character.

“I think he’s a disaster … In human rights and in treating people equal,” the 39th president said before his wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, 91, jumped in. “The worst is that he is not telling the truth, and that just hurts everything,” she added.

What Do We Have to Do to Get You to Vote?

The 2018 midterm election is less than 100 days away, and the issues at stake are more pressing than they have been in years: LGBTQ rights, a Supreme Court seat, ICE raids and detention, Russian attacks on our democratic process, women’s reproductive rights, tax cuts for the rich, and slashing funds for the poor, sick, and elderly. But with it being a midterm election the turnout is expected to as abysmal as ever. In 2014, only 36.4 percent of eligible voters turned out to vote; about average for a midterm. Even during presidential elections only slightly more than half of voters turn out — in 2016, only 55.5 percent of those eligible went to the polls.

We have tried for years to get people to vote. We have tried to talk rationally to you, tried to frighten you, we tried to bribe you with stickers and bragging rights on Instagram, but these efforts continue to fail. Our agents have tried to get you to register, but you have refused to make the minimal effort. That pudgy kid in the T-shirt holding the clipboard at Pride was not patiently waiting for you to finish puking up those fireball shots to hit on you; he was trying to get you registered. Those little old ladies who knocked on your door were not trying to tell you about Jesus; they were a septuagenarian lesbian couple trying to get you to vote to help defend their newly legal marriage, but you decided to scream at them through the door. We have tried to get you to care about others even when you would not be affected by the election because of your gender, income, race, or place of residence privileges, but you still will not vote. Therefore, we are forced to take action and impose consequences that will genuinely affect you.
