Woolly mammoths could walk the Earth again

The plan isn't to re-create true woolly mammoths, but rather to bring their cold-adapted genetic traits, which include small ears and more body fat, to their elephant cousins, creating a hybrid that can wander the tundra where mammoths haven't been seen for 10,000 years

Florida woman busted for skinny-dipping in stranger’s pool

A Florida woman was busted for allegedly skinny-dipping in a stranger’s pool Monday, a report said.

The 69-year-old homeowner, James Clark, called 911 after he discovered the naked swimmer, Heather Kennedy, 42, in his pool after he returned home from a doctor’s appointment, according to an arrest report obtained by the Smoking Gun.

Streetlights are making caterpillars grow up faster—and that’s a bad thing

To gather caterpillars from hedges, “you basically stick drain piping or any kind of open surface under the hedge, and then you basically whack the hedge with a stick five times. Which causes all of the caterpillars to fall out of the hedge and into your receptacles. So that was quite fun.”

In the grass, it’s a bit easier. “The caterpillars spend the day at the base of these grasses, and climb up the stems at night. So you just go along with a sweep net and just sweep through the vegetation.”

The differences were stark: lighted hedges contained just half the caterpillars of their dark counterparts. Grass had one third fewer.

Toxic algae blooms eyed in deaths of family of 3 and their dog on remote California hiking trail

Investigators are considering whether toxic algae blooms or other hazards may have contributed to the deaths of a Northern California couple, their baby and the family dog on a remote hiking trail, authorities said.

The area in the Sierra National Forest where the bodies were found on Tuesday had been treated as a hazmat site after concerns were raised about the deaths being linked to potentially toxic gases from old mines nearby.

To stop climate disaster, make ecocide an international crime. It's the only way

The science is clear: without drastic action to limit temperature rise below 1.5C, the Earth, and all life on it, including all human beings, will suffer devastating consequences.

When Will It Get Too Hot for the Body to Survive?

Who wouldn’t enjoy a few balmy, spring days in Palm Springs, California, after a long, cold, wet winter?

Palm Springs, just a few hours south of Death Valley, is in a desert. Given enough water and access to shade to avoid sunstroke, humans can survive for several hours in dry heat, up to temperatures in the 120s. (This is not doctor-recommended.)

But skip across the continent to Palm Beach, Florida, and it’s a very different story. With its position in the tropics, in one of the most humid regions of the Western Hemisphere, a single day of 120-degree temperatures in Palm Beach would be a mass casualty event. Dead bodies would pile up in the morgues, victims of hyperthermia, or heatstroke—cooked, alive, in their own bodies.

Alarming study finds link between dog foods and heart disease

Conducted by researchers with Tufts University, the study, which was published in the journal Scientific Reports, compared the compounds in dog foods the Food and Drug Administration has flagged as being linked to canine dilated cardiomyopathy with those from standard dog foods.

Canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a disease of the heart muscle that results in the heart muscle growing larger while its contractions, or heart beats, grow weaker, which can cause heart failure or even death.

Among the compounds examined by the researchers and identified as possible links causing the ailment are compounds found in peas and potatoes.

What Quitters Understand About the Job Market

More Americans are telling their boss to shove it. Is the workplace undergoing a revolution—or just a post-pandemic spasm?

Quitting your job is hot this summer. More Americans quit in May than any other month on record going back to the beginning of the century, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For every 100 workers in hotels, restaurants, bars, and retailers, about five of them quit last month.

Low-wage workers aren’t the only ones eyeing the door. In May, more than 700,000 workers in the bureau’s mostly white-collar category of “professional and business services” left their job—the highest monthly number ever. Across all sectors and occupations, four in 10 employees now say they’ve considered peacing out of their current place of work.

Up and down the income ladder, workers have new reasons to tell their boss to shove it.

Target pulling products allegedly made with forced monkey labor

Target will no longer sell coconut milk made by the Thai company Chaokoh after an investigation alleged the drink is tied to forced monkey labor, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals announced Monday.

“By dropping Chaokoh, Target is joining thousands of stores that refuse to profit from chained monkeys’ misery,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman wrote in a statement.

It's a 'hawkpocalypse!' Baby birds have been leaping out of nests to escape intense heat

The record heatwave that ripped through the US's west coast last month forced hundreds of baby birds to jump from their nests in order to escape the blazing temperatures.

The Portland Audubon Society reported that it collected 100 baby hawks in the area in the final week of June when temperatures hit 116 degrees Fahrenheit in regions where these brids call home

Baby hawks arrived at Shasta Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in California in droves, leading specialists to call the rare event a 'hawkpocalypse.'

Is There Such a Thing as Eco-Friendly Jewelry?

Good question. Any industrial jewelry mining can have numerous harmful negative impacts on the environment, ranging from erosion of the land, to leakage of harmful chemicals into the water supply, to the alteration of an entire ecosystem. And let’s not forget about the carbon footprint of the heavy machinery that’s used in the process. So yes, there most definitely is such a thing as eco-friendly jewelry — that is, any jewelry that was mined with the least possible negative impact on the environment, or not mined at all.

Newborn puppy born with no eyes is dumped by breeder who deliberately crossed two runts to try and create the smallest 'teacup' dog possible

A newborn puppy born with no eyes was dumped at a shelter by her breeder after they deliberately bred two runts to try and create the smallest 'teacup' dog possible.

Teacup, who's a cross between a miniature schnauzer and wheaten terrier, was not only born blind, but also with her bladder attached to her uterus.

The tiny pup weighed only 1lb for the first four weeks of her life, struggling to stay warm due to her diminutive size.

West Nile virus and invasive mosquitos arrive in Shasta County

Positive tests from samples of adult mosquitos in the Anderson and Shingletown area confirm the West Nile virus has returned to Shasta county.

The Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control District (SMVCD) said in a press release Saturday that the positive tests came from routine collections as part of their surveillance program. The district is now attempting to decrease mosquito populations through ground treatments in areas where the positive mosquitos were found. They are also continuing their widespread mosquito trapping and testing to monitor virus activity.
