Why a generation is choosing to be child-free
We are in the middle of a mass extinction, the first caused by a single species. There are 7.8 billion of us, on a planet that scientists estimate can support 1.5 billion humans living as the average US citizen does today. And we know that the biggest contribution any individual living in affluent nations can make is to not have children. According to one study, having one fewer child prevents 58.6 tonnes of carbon emissions every year; compare that with living car-free (2.4 tonnes), avoiding a transatlantic return flight (1.6), or eating a plant-based diet (0.82). Another study said it was almost 20 times more important than any other choice an environmentally minded individual could make. Such claims have been questioned. After all, does a parent really bear the burden of their child’s emissions? Won’t our individual emissions fall as technologies and lifestyles change? Isn’t measuring our individual carbon footprint – a concept popularised by oil and gas multinational BP – giving a free pass to the handful of corporate powers responsible for almost all carbon emissions? The only thing that isn’t up for debate is that we all know that we are living in ways that can’t continue.
Coronavirus isn’t likely to give us coronababies – but a pandemic isn’t the reason that having children has shifted from an inevitability to a choice, and now, a moral question. A long time ago, “Do we have children?” became “Should we?”

Hate crimes against perceived coronavirus carriers spike in NYC
The city has coronavirus hate-crime fever, NYPD data shows.
Crime stats released Thursday show a spike in attacks against perceived carriers of the COVID-19 bug.
The data shows there have been 23 hate crimes against victim’s whose protected category is classified as “other” so far this year — a 475-percent increase from the 4 reported over the same period last year.
The crimes are categorized that way even though a majority of victims are Asian, officials said.
“Recent Coronavirus-related incidents fall under the anti-other category as there are two motivating factors behind these crimes,” the accompanying statement said. “The victim’s race (anti-Asian) and the perception that they have the Coronavirus (anti-disability).”

Pet Dog Mauls Elderly Man, Bites Off Arm Flesh Leaving Bone Exposed
A dog mauled an elderly man and ripped off a "chunk of his arm," leaving his bone exposed during the savage attack. The incident took place last week in a park in Derby, England.
Charles Brown, 82, was left bleeding after the attack carried out by a "black, muscular Labrador." According to local media reports, the owner of the dog fled the scene when it attacked the man.
"He’s had his injections, you’ll be fine," the owner said as he ran from the site. Brown managed to call wife Ann, 74, who rushed him to a nearby hospital. Doctors told him he would require a skin graft to repair the damage.
"The force of the dog was indescribable and it knocked me over onto my back. My lower body is all bruised, my back is twisted, and the flesh of my arm was nowhere to be seen... I don’t know if the dog ate it or not, but it was gone, I remember laying in bed that evening and noticing how much flesh was gone," Brown said, according to U.K.'s Metro.

A large dog attacked a 10-year-old schoolboy while he was walking in a park in Greater Manchester, England. The boy was mauled by the Doberman-like dog Monday.
According to local reports, the child was left with deep wounds across his back after being savaged by the canine. George Parker was found covered in blood and was rushed to a hospital. His mother, Catherine O'Neill, told the Sun that she was distraught after seeing her son was brutally attacked by the dog.
"He had blood marks all over him. He lifted his top up and I saw all the scratches and cuts," the mother told Manchester Evening News. "He said he'd gone onto the field and asked the owner if he was friendly. The dog was off the lead... The children said it was a black and brown dog. I phoned 101. He was crying and was upset. He was a bit quiet, which is not like George."
The mother also added that the owner of the dog left the scene when the attack took place, leaving her son injured. The 34-year-old expressed concern that the attack might make her son fear dogs for life.
