Target pulling products allegedly made with forced monkey labor

Target will no longer sell coconut milk made by the Thai company Chaokoh after an investigation alleged the drink is tied to forced monkey labor, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals announced Monday.

“By dropping Chaokoh, Target is joining thousands of stores that refuse to profit from chained monkeys’ misery,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman wrote in a statement.

It's a 'hawkpocalypse!' Baby birds have been leaping out of nests to escape intense heat

The record heatwave that ripped through the US's west coast last month forced hundreds of baby birds to jump from their nests in order to escape the blazing temperatures.

The Portland Audubon Society reported that it collected 100 baby hawks in the area in the final week of June when temperatures hit 116 degrees Fahrenheit in regions where these brids call home

Baby hawks arrived at Shasta Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in California in droves, leading specialists to call the rare event a 'hawkpocalypse.'

Newborn puppy born with no eyes is dumped by breeder who deliberately crossed two runts to try and create the smallest 'teacup' dog possible

A newborn puppy born with no eyes was dumped at a shelter by her breeder after they deliberately bred two runts to try and create the smallest 'teacup' dog possible.

Teacup, who's a cross between a miniature schnauzer and wheaten terrier, was not only born blind, but also with her bladder attached to her uterus.

The tiny pup weighed only 1lb for the first four weeks of her life, struggling to stay warm due to her diminutive size.

Adults with COVID-19 are more likely to have dined out before getting sick, CDC report says

Restaurants are trying to keep customers safe from COVID-19 – by wearing masks, serving outdoors and disinfecting from top to bottom – but a new study published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests it might not be enough.

Adults with confirmed COVID-19 are twice as likely to have dined out at a restaurant in the 14 days before becoming sick than those who tested negative, according to the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report issued Thursday.

Positive patients were also more likely to report going to a bar or coffee shop when the analysis was limited to those without close contact to people with known coronavirus.

Scientists Rediscover Rare ‘Singing’ Dogs Thought to Have Gone Extinct

A rare “singing” dog native to New Guinea was rediscovered in the wild after scientists had believed the breed had gone extinct for over 50 years.

The breed—known for its unique vocalizations similar to the song of the humpback whale—was first studied in 1897.

Researchers say that due to inbreeding in captivity and because both breeds were separated for several decades, the “singing” dog and the highland wild dog have no identical genomes. But this does not mean that they are different breeds.

"The New Guinea ‘singing’ dog that we know of today is a breed that was basically created by people," Dr. Elaine Ostrander, a distinguished investigator for the National Institutes of Health and senior author of the study, wrote.

Man knocked unconscious by falling cat while walking dog

Guess they don’t always land on their feet.

A Chinese dog owner likely prefers pooches even more now, after he was knocked out cold by a falling cat, as seen in a viral video from Aug. 14.

In the 45-second CCTV footage, which currently has more than 120,000 views on YouTube, a man named Gao can be seen going for a stroll with his golden retriever in Harbin, Heilongjiang, local media outlet the Paper reports.

Then, out of nowhere, a black and white cat drops out of the sky and hits him on the head, causing him to collapse to the sidewalk unconscious.

Bison attacks woman taking photos of herd at South Dakota state park

The encounter was captured on video and shows a group of motorcycle riders stopped in a road as a large herd passes. A woman walks over to the grass and sits down to get a picture of a mother bison and her calf.

"This was certainly an unfortunate occurrence. We cannot caution visitors enough to respect the space of these animals and all the animals they encounter in the park," the statement said.

Why a generation is choosing to be child-free

We are in the middle of a mass extinction, the first caused by a single species. There are 7.8 billion of us, on a planet that scientists estimate can support 1.5 billion humans living as the average US citizen does today. And we know that the biggest contribution any individual living in affluent nations can make is to not have children. According to one study, having one fewer child prevents 58.6 tonnes of carbon emissions every year; compare that with living car-free (2.4 tonnes), avoiding a transatlantic return flight (1.6), or eating a plant-based diet (0.82). Another study said it was almost 20 times more important than any other choice an environmentally minded individual could make. Such claims have been questioned. After all, does a parent really bear the burden of their child’s emissions? Won’t our individual emissions fall as technologies and lifestyles change? Isn’t measuring our individual carbon footprint – a concept popularised by oil and gas multinational BP – giving a free pass to the handful of corporate powers responsible for almost all carbon emissions? The only thing that isn’t up for debate is that we all know that we are living in ways that can’t continue.

Coronavirus isn’t likely to give us coronababies – but a pandemic isn’t the reason that having children has shifted from an inevitability to a choice, and now, a moral question. A long time ago, “Do we have children?” became “Should we?”

Doctors Come Under Attack in India as Coronavirus Stigma Grows

Katdare’s experience is one of the more dramatic in a phenomenon that has become common in India lately: health-care workers being subjected to violence and abuse as they try to contain the virus. Assaults have been reported across the country as people panic about catching the disease from medical workers or being stigmatized for having contracted it themselves.

Man strangles coyote after animal attacks his child during family walk

KENSINGTON, N.H. – A coyote attacked several people within hours Monday before being killed by a local man after the animal tried to bite his son, according to Kensington police.

Kensington Police Chief Scott Cain said the man was walking with his family on Phillips Exeter Academy’s Red Trail on the Kensington-Exeter line when the coyote appeared and attacked the family’s young son.

Cain said the coyote was only able to bite the child’s jacket before the father grabbed the animal and strangled it to death. However, in the struggle, the father was bitten and he had to go to the hospital to receive rabies shots, Cain said.

Officers Open Fire On Dogs 'Tearing Apart', Dragging Homeless Man On Street

Officers from the Philadelphia Police department opened fire on dogs to stop them from attacking a homeless person in Hunting Park. The attack happened early on Monday morning at the intersection of 6th and Tioga.

Carmen Velasquez, a neighbor, claimed she heard him screaming for assistance in Spanish and saw the dogs on top of him literally tearing him apart.

Surveillance cameras caught the incident and showed video of two dogs biting and dragging the 54-year-old man.

The attack apparently lasted more than 5 minutes involving a pit bull, and a bullmastiff estimated to be 100 pounds.

Velasquez claimed he could not escape despite the attempts to chase the dogs.

'Wonderful' Michigan Girl, 9, Is Mauled to Death by 3 Dogs, and Pet Owner Is Arrested

A 9-year-old girl riding her bike near her family’s Detroit home died after an attack by three pit pulls Monday afternoon, after the girl’s father said he’d warned the dogs’ owner that his fence was too flimsy to hold back the animals.

“We had an argument about it just last week and he just didn’t take care of his dogs properly. He could have prevented this,” the father, Armando Hernandez, told Detroit radio station WWJ.

The girl, Emma Valentina Hernandez, was taken to Children’s Hospital of Michigan and died from her injuries in what the Wayne County medical examiner ruled was an accident, reports The Detroit News.
