The data is in: men are too fragile to wear Covid-19 masks. Grow up, guys

Last week, our social media feeds were flooded by the image of Dr Anthony Fauci, the top US infectious disease expert, telling US senators that the country was “going in the wrong direction”. The image had a vivid, layered power. Not only did it feel like a national death knell, but Fauci’s appearance – in an imperial-red face mask emblazoned with the insignia of baseball’s Washington Nationals – seemed to signal another culture war. Fauci was making a comment about how to maintain one’s masculinity while wearing a face mask.

Fauci apparently isn’t the only one anxious about face masks impeding his masculinity. The shock jock Joe Rogan, known for his massive following of male listeners, recently suggested that only “bitches” wear masks. Donald Trump Jr was photographed at a packed party in the Hamptons, like a baddie from a John Hughes film, conspicuously sans mask.

How The Brady Bunch Destroyed Parenting For a Generation

It?s not such a stretch then to suggest that a popular TV program, such as The Brady Bunch, might have had a significant impact on how people have raised their children since. Millions of people have grown up watching The Brady Bunch, and many have seen it either as the perfect version of normal, or as the way they wished that they were raised in their own childhood. Would it influence the way they might one day raise their own children?

I think so.

Yet if we look at kids today, we see evidence of a pronounced lack of discipline. I submit that a generation of people who were raised on The Brady Bunch might come to see some legitimacy in the weak response from the TV parents, as though it?s somehow the enlightened course of action.

I also submit that it?s that kind lack of discipline that has contributed to an explosion in the number of incarcerations. Some 65 million people in the US have criminal records; is it too far-fetched to connect the dots between a lack of discipline in the home, and the need for the criminal justice system to do in adult life what the parents wouldn?t do in childhood?

Real life isn?t The Brady Bunch, and it?s beyond silly to think that that kind of non-discipline has any use at all. Sadly, it seems to have become the new normal in American households today.

Tone-deaf NYU dean sends video of herself dancing to students seeking tuition refunds

Hundreds of students at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts demanded a partial tuition refund since spring classes were moved online amid the coronavirus pandemic –and their dean responded with a bizarre video of herself dancing to REM’s “Losing my Religion.’’

As of Friday evening, a Change.org petition started by NYU students has garnered more than 2,600 signatures from people seeking the tuition relief.

Students say online classes and remote learning via video conferencing app’s like Zoom are not worth the school’s $58,000-a-year tuition.

The petition is pushing for the NYU Board of Trustees “to refund a portion of our Spring 2020 tuition paid for the resources, universally deemed crucial to arts education, lost in the recent switch to remote teaching.”

Middle Age Misery Peaks at Age of 47.2, Economist Says

Middle age is miserable, according to a new economic study which pinpoints 47.2 years old as the moment of peak unhappiness in the developed world.

Dartmouth College Professor David Blanchflower, a former Bank of England policy maker, studied data across 132 countries to measure the relationship between wellbeing and age.

He concluded that in every country there is a “happiness curve” which is U-shaped over lifetimes. It reaches its lowest in the developing nations at 48.2.

A 19-month-old had thinning bones and no teeth after her parents fed her a vegan diet of fruit, rice milk, potatoes, and tofu

In March 2018, two parents in Australia took their daughter to the hospital after she had a seizure. Once there, doctors found that the girl was severely malnourished and had rickets, a condition in which children's bones are softer and weaker because they are deficient in vitamin D, according to the Mayo Clinic.

In December, the parents pleaded guilty to causing danger or serious injury to their baby, acknowledging that they fed their daughter a vegan diet that included tofu, rice milk, vegetables, fruit, and oats, the Australian Broadcasting Company reported on Thursday.

Doctors said the girl's bones didn't develop properly because of her nutrient deficiencies, and a foster-care provider who met the 19-month-old said she looked just 3 months old because of her condition and had no teeth, according to the ABC report.

Men also have a ‘biological clock’ that poses serious health risks: study

The battle of the sexes just got a lot more equalized.

A new study out of Rutgers University finds that men have a ticking “biological clock” — just like women — and if they make babies in their 40s it can negatively impact the health of their partners and progeny.

“While it’s widely accepted that physiological changes that occur in women after 35 can affect conception, pregnancy and the health of the child, most men don’t realize their advanced age can have a similar impact,” says study author Gloria Bachmann, director of the Women’s Health Institute at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, in a statement.

The number of infants born to dads aged 45-plus spiked 10 percent in the US over the past four decades, likely due to assisted reproductive technology. Bachmann analyzed the effect of “advanced parental age” — brace yourself: it ranges from 35 to 45 — on fertility, pregnancy and the health of children for her study published in the journal Maturitas.

Guys who start siring spawn later in life put their lovers at risk for increased pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes, preterm birth and preeclampsia. Plus, the resulting babies were found to be at higher risk of premature birth, late-term still birth, low Apgar scores and birth weight, higher incidence of newborn seizures and birth defects such as congenital heart disease and cleft palate.

People's Brains Don't Reach Adulthood Until Age 30, Study Finds

There's a good reason why managing adult responsibilities only became somewhat bearable in your 30s, according to researchers.

Although anyone over 18 years old is considered an adult, scientists argue that our brains don't mature that quickly, The Independent reports. Speaking at a meeting of the Academy of Medical Sciences in Oxford in London, researchers explained that our brains slowly transition to adulthood, which is finally reached in our 30s.

“What we’re really saying is that to have a definition of when you move from childhood to adulthood looks increasingly absurd,” professor Peter Jones, a neuroscientist at the University of Cambridge, explained at the meeting. “It’s a much more nuanced transition that takes place over three decades."
