Little Mermaid Live, The (2019) Whimper

The detail I most remember from "The Little Mermaid," was how her hair moved. If you can't establish an artistic craft to convey that, the art is lost. She flew when she needed to swim.

My treasure list:

I haven't seen so much visible invisible wire since "I Love Lucy." Decorating them might have helped

The octaves were lower than the crowd cheer. Amplification was a problem

A hologram of the improbable fish might have sufficed instead of plastic muppets

Graham Philips proved a singing alpha as Auli'i Cravalho expressed hard work

John Stamos' cook was destined to fail even if he had done it in a thong

Shaggy was feeling the beat but something spooked him and he started whispering

You shouldn't stumble. Even a shark shows grace underwater

Having the cartoon enact emotions whilst the live mostly sang is lazy

The deed was cast. The commercial for a beloved classic was born because they knew that after this, we'd flee to the original material. Magic! 08-Nov-2019

Picture of Dorian Gray, The (1941) Arf

George Sanders spends the first act posing as if the film centered around him and philosophizing harshly on life matters. Angela Lansbury's Sibyl Vane is miscast and depleted of sensuality. Hurd Hatfield is agamous and ambiguous with no hunt for the debaucheries the writers keep mentioning he's into. The portrait and the narration had the only life the film required. 03-Nov-2019

Blackcoat's Daughter, The (2015) Arf

Every persona suffers from peculiarity. The film courses through a dark vein and almost clinches God vs monster but it left too many holes uncapped. 25-Oct-2019

El Angel (2018) Woof

The angel is a pretty boy thug serial menace. The treatment is enamored of its subject, diluting his gay tendencies and celebrating every crime as a cute inspired revolution. Lorenzo Ferro keeps the character charged and the film pulsing but the consequences for heinous are overlooked. I could smell the 70s. 24-Oct-2019

Alladin (2019) Arf

All the boys needed testosterone shots on vocals. Guy Ritchie has the balls to make a dream come true but has no audacity to eject it with soul. Smith is an imposing genie that computes the gay with little gumption. Mr. Massoud (Aladdin) squishes triumphantly but with too much modern awareness. Naomi Scott (Jasmine) is the only with a voice but she is too liberated in her femininity to convey the struggles of Jasmine's past. Marwin Kenzari squishes delightfully as a person but lends no voice or stature to Jafar. Ritchie brings as many things to life as he killed. 22-Oct-2019

Raising Dion (2019-) ArfUpgrade

When mama discusses the mental incarceration of racism to a son that's becoming physically stronger, my negative comments became obliterated. The writers ventured to give us a modern mama willing to be sensitively honest with her child and equip him for life's challenges. Respect. 20-Oct-2019
A subject worth exploring in a culture historically evaded. It moves better when it tightens the reins but it's self awareness, interspersed soundtrack along with sprinkles of bleeding sap, drain it. 18-Oct-2019

It's exhilarating to watch Armie Hammer unravel but the film's obscurity abandons him. 19-Oct-2019

Look Away (2018) Arf

It takes its cues from "Carrie" without employing a director's bag of tricks. India Eisley's beauty is evident at first glance so there is no launch metamorphosis. Her Maria should ignite uncontrollable rage and attack from boys not bullying and insecurity. The mirror is where many tricks could have been deployed but minute experimentation and bad editing keep it cold and non-dimensional. The daddy seduction is a successful creep that doesn't consummate, explanations are not forthcoming, the bully gets no follow-up, mama is useless and the writers employed little sense. 13-Oct-2019

Invaders From Mars (1953) Arf

To watch this film you have to tap into your child and understand the limitations of its time. It gets to business almost immediately, all is accepted at face value and good and evil hold to their lanes. It has a great start and there are enough influences to accommodate its art but the martians are silly. 10-Oct-2019

House Of The Witch (2017) Arf

Boys hoping scares in a haunted house will make girls leap onto their laps. The director utilizes fresh tricks to scrub cliches out but he gets shackled like the group in the house. 02-Oct-2019

Don't Knock Twice (2016) Arf

Katee Sackhoff distributed guilt, anger and appeasement to a character that didn't need it and it's appreciated. The director clangs the scares and the mythology works but the whole doesn't satisfy like the details. 26-Sep-2019

Boys In Trees (2016) Arf

Rekindling a bromance. There were so many elements that could have thrust the story forward but the director was so intent on a surprise ending that his magic tricks don't total rationality. It's underhanded. The film relies heavily on Toby Wallace, whose star endowment keeps it flowing and wrings the only emotion at end. 23-Sep-2019

Frailty (2001) Arf

I can hear Paxton say "demon" all day. I can fall into melodious dreams hearing McConaughey narrate. The film straddles the supernatural with an organic crime story. It was a story that needed to be told straight or absolutely bonkers. The film lost the opportunity to provide readied performers with characters that could outshine them. It came close but its confusion expired it before the finish line. 04-Sep-2019

Wife, The (2018) Woof

A genius beholden to society for a privileged life granted. A wife chained to such a man with no identity of her own. The story compels but missteps by presuming that we wont respect the woman unless she is of equal caliber. Why can't we respect the wife that stands idly by? There are more of them. Close was adroitly hired to give a schmuck his comeuppance but the writing lets her down. The countdown gets stuck when sudden happens and Close is abruptly halted from slaying. An almost. 30-Jul-2019
