The Number of Homeless Students Now Matches the Entire Population of New Hampshire

The number of homeless students nationwide has more than doubled in 15 years to a new high of 1.5 million in the 2017-18 school year, according to data released from the National Center for Homeless Education last week.

For context, that means there are as many homeless students in America as there are people living in New Hampshire — if not more.

The big question is why — which is complicated by the fact that student homelessness is measured differently than homelessness among the adult population, and still considered a vast undercount.

Major airline to sever ties with chocolate supplier over the owner's pro-life, Christian views

Swiss Air Lines is said to have nixed its relationship chocolate manufacturer Läderach over its owner's affiliation with pro-life, Christian causes, LifeSiteNews' Martin Bürger reported.

The airline had a business relationship with chocolatier Läderach that spanned over a decade, providing passengers with small boxes of its world-famous chocolates as a way of saying thanks for flying with the airlines.

Now, after months of protests from activists, Swiss Air has decided to sever ties with the chocolate-maker and will stop distributing its truffles and other sweets in the first half of 2020.

Why are they attacking a chocolate-maker?

11 brutally honest reasons millenials don't want kids

When it comes to embarking on the journey of parenthood, lots of millennials are saying, "Meh. No, thanks."

According to data from the Urban Institute, birth rates among 20-something women declined 15% between 2007 and 2012. Additional research from the Pew Research Center reflects a longer-term trend of women eschewing parenthood as the number of U.S. women who choose to forego motherhood altogether has doubled since 1970.

This trend is fascinating, in part because there's long been a taboo associated with people (particularly, women) choosing to opt out of parenthood. Women who choose not to have kids have been referred to as "shallow" and "self-absorbed," and even the pope has said the decision not to procreate is fundamentally "selfish."

In an effort to find out why so many young people are really deciding against parenthood, we solicited dozens of responses from our audience via Tumblr and Google Forms. The responses we received from people of all sexes and identities reveal that there are myriad reasons why people are opting out of parenthood — and all of them are equally valid.

Women Are Growing Out Their Body Hair For 'Januhairy' To Raise Funds To Tackle Climate Change

Women are 'growing out their [body] hair to clear out the air' as part of 'Januhairy', which this year is raising funds to fight climate change and restore natural habitats.

The campaign was launched last January and aims to 'encourage the acceptance of body hair on women' while also raising money for charity.

Trolls turned 911 into a weapon. Now cops are fighting back

Anyone with a grudge and someone’s address can make a ‘swatting’ call, but what was once a niche prank played by gamers has become a favored means of terrorizing famous, controversial and vulnerable people. It has also become more organized in recent years, with online forums and chat rooms dedicated to targeted attacks on individuals, including YouTube personalities, tech executives, activists, authors and journalists.

Law enforcement agencies and city officials around the country have responded with anti-swatting procedures and tools to blunt this weaponization of the 911 system. In Seattle, the police department has launched a three-pronged approach that includes special training for officers and 911 operators and — a first for the U.S. — a registry for residents who think they may become swatting targets. The registry gives first responders a warning that an emergency call about a violent situation may be a hoax.

'Flight shaming' hits air travel: One in five claim to be cutting back on flying due to environmental damage, survey finds

One in five households have already cut back on flying because they are ashamed of the environmental damage they are causing, according to a report.

An environmental movement called 'flight-shaming' - which counts Swedish school girl activist Greta Thunberg among its supporters - is beginning to make even hard-nosed investors in the aviation industry nervous.

Banking giant UBS has predicted that the campaign could halve growth in air traffic in the decades to come.

University of Kansas faculty and staff want Chick-fil-A boycotted, calling it a 'bastion of bigotry'

Faculty and staff at the University of Kansas sent a letter to the school's chancellor, calling for a boycott of Chick-fil-A on campus over the company's stance on LGBTQ issues, according to The Hill.

Over the summer, the university allowed Chick-fil-A to open a location inside the student union, and entered a contract agreement with the company to sponsor the "Chick-fil-A coin toss" at home football games in coming years. Faculty and staff have protested Chick-fil-A's support of organizations "hostile to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer LGBTQ people, families, and communities."

Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish & More Protest Abortion Bans With New Planned Parenthood Campaign

Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga and Lizzo are among 136 artists who have joined Planned Parenthood to protest a recent wave of laws in states across the U.S. restricting access to abortion.

The music engagement side to the reproductive healthcare nonprofit's larger Bans Off My Body campaign launched over the weekend with a full-page ad in Billboard magazine, signed by dozens of artists. Over the next few months, Planned Parenthood will call fans to action at music festivals like Jay-Z's Made in America in Philadelphia and Music Midtown in Atlanta, with Georgia having just signed into law a so-called "heartbeat bill" banning abortion six weeks into pregnancy. The nonprofit will also have a presence on a number of artists' national tours this year.

Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic Only Happens if Black America Leads

The underpinning of the administration’s plan is the recent surveillance data that shows that 50 percent of the U.S. epidemic is in 48 counties, Washington D.C., and San Juan, Puerto Rico, and seven states that have a substantial rural population living with HIV. While there is no question that focusing on the jurisdictions with the highest HIV burden makes sense, we must ask if focusing on geography alone — the where — will unlock the mystery of ending the HIV epidemic.

But with 60 percent of the Black HIV epidemic lying within the aforementioned jurisdictions, can we end the HIV/AIDS epidemic without also focusing on the other W’s, the who and the what?

Adults Take to Twitter to Bully 16-Year-Old Climate Activist

A few extremely balanced adults exhibited cool behavior yesterday when they decided to mock a teen on Twitter: 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, who set sail from Plymouth, U.K., on a two-week, carbon-neutral sailing voyage to attend climate talks in New York and Chile. Thunberg is a Swedish activist with Asperger syndrome who began striking from school to bring awareness to climate change in May 2018, and has since become a leader of the youth-driven international climate movement.

Michelle Obama's advice to 1st-gen college students: 'You are faster, quicker, smarter, sharper'

Former first lady Michelle Obama has a message for students who are the first in their family to attend college.

"It’s going to be okay as long as you don’t quit," Obama told students Wednesday at her annual #BeatingtheOdds Summit for first-generation college students. "There are lesser people than you who have gone further."

Obama described being at "probably every powerful table there is to be at."

"Let me tell you," she told the students, "they’re not smarter than you. I’ve met these people."

'Climate Despair' Is Making People Give Up on Life

n the summer of 2015—the warmest year on record at the time—it was the literal heat that got to Meg Ruttan Walker, a 37-year-old former teacher in Kitchener, Ontario. "Summers have been stressful to me since having my son," said Ruttan Walker, who is now an environmental activist. "It's hard to enjoy a season that's a constant reminder that the world is getting warmer."

"I think my anxiety just reached a peak," Ruttan Walker continued. It felt like there was nowhere to go, and although she had spoken to her primary care doctor about anxiety, she hadn't sought help with her mental health. Suddenly, she was contemplating self-harm. "Though I don't think I would have hurt myself, I didn't know how to live with the fear of... the apocalypse, I guess? My son was home with me and I had to call my friend over to watch him because I couldn't even look at him without breaking down," Ruttan Walker said. She eventually checked herself into an overnight mental health facility.

Her case is extreme, but many people are suffering from what could be called "climate despair," a sense that climate change is an unstoppable force that will render humanity extinct and renders life in the meantime futile. As David Wallace-Wells noted in his 2019 bestseller The Uninhabitable Earth, "For most who perceive an already unfolding climate crisis and intuit a more complete metamorphosis of the world to come, the vision is a bleak one, often pieced together from perennial eschatological imagery inherited from existing apocalyptic texts like the Book of Revelation, the inescapable sourcebook for Western anxiety about the end of the world."

The Barrage of Bad News About Climate Change Is Triggering 'Eco-Anxiety,' Psychologists Say

When news about the environment becomes grim, you might be overcome by an urge to hide or collapse.

On last week's episode of HBO drama "Big Little Lies," 9-year-old Amabella did both. The character's metallic boots were found sticking out of a classroom closet following a lesson on climate change, and the internet collectively nodded in recognition.
