Google fires Margaret Mitchell, another top researcher on its AI ethics team

Google has fired one of its top artificial intelligence researchers, Margaret Mitchell, escalating internal turmoil at the company following the departure of Timnit Gebru, another leading figure on Google’s AI ethics team.

In a statement to Reuters, Google said the firing followed a weeks-long investigation that found she moved electronic files outside the company. Google said Mitchell violated the company’s code of conduct and security policies.

Gebru said Google fired her after she questioned an order not to publish a paper claiming AI that mimics language could hurt marginalized populations.

NYC public school asks parents to ‘reflect’ on their ‘whiteness’

The curriculum, written by Barnor Hesse, an associate professor of African American studies at Northwestern University in Illinois, claims, “There is a regime of whiteness, and there are action-oriented white identities.

“People who identify with whiteness are one of these,’’ Hesse writes above the eight-point list.

“It’s about time we build an ethnography of whiteness, since white people have been the ones writing about and governing Others,’’ Hesse adds.

Headteacher apologises after school exposes kids to homophobic booklet claiming sexuality can be ‘overcome’

The Notre-Dame de Kerbertrand high school in Quimperlé, France, has been accused of making How to Be Successful in your Love and Sexual Life by Father Jean-Benoit Casterman available to students.

The booklet, written in French and first published in 2006, propagates deeply harmful and outdated ideas about LGBT+ identities.

It claims: “Homosexuality is often the result of emotional development marked by an excessive influence of the mother during childhood or as a result of sexual child abuse by adults that induced an attraction to the same sex or a fear of the opposite sex,” according to LGBTQ Nation.

“Homosexual tendencies are therefore not wanted and do not make a person happy. That’s why homosexual people deserve our sympathy.”

Meet the Man Leading the Charge on America's Boy Crisis / Opinion

"As the women's movement went mainstream, I loved the options for women it created, but also felt there was a demonizing of men, an undervaluing of the family, and a blindness to how boys and men were being harmed that would have profound effects on families, boys, addiction, careers, male unemployment, the global economy and so on," he explained. "When I uncovered reasons that were not part of the public consciousness, I felt I had something to contribute."

Farrell soon discovered that there was little serious attention being paid to the space of boy's development, either in academia or anywhere else. The subject was, in Farrell's words, "a national afterthought."

What was not an afterthought to Farrell were the big disparities in outcomes of every kind between boys and girls in America. Disparities that crossed ethnic, racial and geographic boundaries.

"Before age 9, boys and girls commit suicide equally," Farrell told a Tedx audience. "By age 10 to 14, it is twice the amount for boys. Between 15 and 19, it is four times the amount, and by ages 18 to 24, it is six times the amount. That's staggering." Often, these tragedies seem to share one circumstance: the lack of a father in the home.

Two Disney World fanatics who live-streamed their trip to the Orlando theme park's reopening over the weekend are receiving intense backlash for vacationing amid a pandemic and continuing to explore the park after one fell ill.

YouTuber Tonya Blakey, known as That Crazy Disney Lady to her 9,500 subscribers, streamed over 10 hours of footage of her trip to the Magic Kingdom on Friday and Saturday. In the videos, she and her friend, Robin, wandered the grounds, rode Splash Mountain, and experienced a brief health scare.

Sweden grapples with high death toll after controversially refusing to lock down

Sweden’s controversial decision to refuse coronavirus lockdown measures is taking its toll — with the number of deaths up to 17 times higher than its Nordic neighbors, according to reports.

Fatalities in the Scandinavian nation topped 1,300 on Thursday — far worse than Denmark, Norway and Finland, which all implemented containment measures, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University.

By comparison, Denmark has reported 321 COVID-19 deaths, Norway has reported 150 deaths and Finland has reported just 75, the data shows.

A damning investigation reveals Clearview AI’s deep ties to white supremacists

We already knew there were some ties between creepy facial-recognition software company Clearview AI and the alt-right, but a damning and extensive exposé by Luke O’Brien at HuffPost details just how extensive the connections are between it and prominent white supremacists. It turns out Clearview AI CEO Hoan Ton-That has an extensive network of xenophobic, anti-Semitic, homophobic, and racist buddies, many of whom he's been hanging out with since at least 2015, when the precursor to Clearview AI, a service called SmartChekr, was still a work in progress.

QUESTIONABLE COMPANY — The HuffPost piece posits that in addition Richard Schwartz and Ton-That, Smartchekr’s founders also included Pax Dickinson and Chuck Johnson. All were active on a Slack channel for the now-defunct, white supremacist crowdfunding site WeSearchr. In an exchange on the channel, Ton-That used a Chinese slur in reference to Representative Judy Chu. Ton-That also reportedly socialized with Johnson frequently, and attended at least one dinner with Richard Spencer.

In a statement to The Verge and HuffPost, Ton-That denied that any of this suggests he's a racist himself, or that he should be judged for the company he keeps

Teacher and ‘LGBT ally’ loves her boyfriend but is ‘hesitant’ to buy a house with him because he ‘hates gay people’

The woman from Illinois wrote to the Santa Rosa’s Press Gazette’s ‘Dear Abby’ column to explain her dilemma.

She said she had previously been in an abusive relationship, but broke it off 14 years ago and stayed single to raise her “small son to adulthood”.

She finally found someone she had “strong feelings” for, and who felt the same about her, around seven months ago.

The woman wrote: “My feelings for my boyfriend are strong, and it’s mutual. He is giving, kind, caring, hardworking and protective. We are very much in love.

Using tote bags instead of plastic could help spread the coronavirus

The COVID-19 outbreak is giving new meaning to those “sustainable” shopping bags that politicians and environmentalists have been so eager to impose on the public. These reusable tote bags can sustain the COVID-19 and flu viruses — and spread the viruses throughout the store.

Researchers have been warning for years about the risks of these bags spreading deadly viral and bacterial diseases, but public officials have ignored their concerns, determined to eliminate single-use bags and other plastic products despite their obvious advantages in reducing the spread of pathogens. In New York state, a new law took effect this month banning single-use plastic bags in most retail businesses, and this week Democratic state legislators advanced a bill that would force coffee shops to accept consumers’ reusable cups — a practice that Starbucks and other chains have wisely suspended to avoid spreading the COVID-19 virus.

John Flanagan, the Republican leader of the New York state Senate, has criticized the new legislation and called for a suspension of the law banning plastic bags. “Senate Democrats’ desperate need to be green is unclean during the coronavirus outbreak,” he said Tuesday, but so far he’s been a lonely voice among public officials.

Margaret Court’s Church Reckons “The Blood Of Jesus” Will Protect Them From Coronavirus

This week in ‘Good Ideas’, sub-category ‘What Could Possibly Go Wrong?’, Margaret Court and her congregation have declared that they are safe from the coronavirus pandemic because the blood of Jesus will protect them.

The Victory Life Church released a statement to followers yesterday, saying that daily prayers and additional hand sanitiser are the only measures they’ll take to combat the rapidly-spreading disease.

Conservative group hires German teen Naomi Seibt to rival Greta Thunberg’s climate views

A 19-year-old German YouTuber is being dubbed the “anti-Greta.”

A US think tank with ties to the Trump administration has tapped Naomi Seibt, 19, who touts “climate realism” over “climate alarmism,” to represent its views, according to the Washington Post.

“Naomi Seibt vs. Greta Thunberg: whom should we trust?” the Illinois-based conservative and libertarian Heartland Institute asked in a video, referring to the 17-year-old Swedish climate activist.

James Taylor, director of the Arthur B. Robinson Center for Climate and Environmental Policy at the institute, called Seibt a “fantastic voice for free markets and for climate realism,” the newspaper reported.

The Number of Homeless Students Now Matches the Entire Population of New Hampshire

The number of homeless students nationwide has more than doubled in 15 years to a new high of 1.5 million in the 2017-18 school year, according to data released from the National Center for Homeless Education last week.

For context, that means there are as many homeless students in America as there are people living in New Hampshire — if not more.

The big question is why — which is complicated by the fact that student homelessness is measured differently than homelessness among the adult population, and still considered a vast undercount.

11 brutally honest reasons millenials don't want kids

When it comes to embarking on the journey of parenthood, lots of millennials are saying, "Meh. No, thanks."

According to data from the Urban Institute, birth rates among 20-something women declined 15% between 2007 and 2012. Additional research from the Pew Research Center reflects a longer-term trend of women eschewing parenthood as the number of U.S. women who choose to forego motherhood altogether has doubled since 1970.

This trend is fascinating, in part because there's long been a taboo associated with people (particularly, women) choosing to opt out of parenthood. Women who choose not to have kids have been referred to as "shallow" and "self-absorbed," and even the pope has said the decision not to procreate is fundamentally "selfish."

In an effort to find out why so many young people are really deciding against parenthood, we solicited dozens of responses from our audience via Tumblr and Google Forms. The responses we received from people of all sexes and identities reveal that there are myriad reasons why people are opting out of parenthood — and all of them are equally valid.

'Flight shaming' hits air travel: One in five claim to be cutting back on flying due to environmental damage, survey finds

One in five households have already cut back on flying because they are ashamed of the environmental damage they are causing, according to a report.

An environmental movement called 'flight-shaming' - which counts Swedish school girl activist Greta Thunberg among its supporters - is beginning to make even hard-nosed investors in the aviation industry nervous.

Banking giant UBS has predicted that the campaign could halve growth in air traffic in the decades to come.
