Indiana School Board Member Says 'Cry Me a River' Over Trans Suicides

Activists in Evansville, Ind., caught a school board member on video appearing to dismiss their concerns about safety for LGBTQ kids.

This week, ten members of the Tri-State Alliance — a social service and educational organization serving LGBTQ communities in southeastern Illinois, southwestern Indiana, and western Kentucky — attended a board meeting of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County School Corporation to ask for greater protections for queer students.

After the meeting, the activists confronted school board members, according to posts on the group’s Facebook page.

The Tri-State Alliance says board member Ann Ennis claimed there was no support on the board for addressing suicide concerns among trans students.

On a video posted to the group’s Facebook page, Tri-State Alliance President Wally Paynter can be heard calling Ennis transphobic.

What Kids Who Bully Often Have In Common

When parents, educators and mental health professionals talk about bullying, there is understandably a lot of emphasis on the victims. But in focusing solely on victims in anti-bullying efforts, an important part of the equation gets forgotten: the kids who do the bullying.

“Bullying is not a one-time event or a random act of mean behavior but rather a pervasive, ongoing pattern of aggression targeted toward another child who in some way has less power in the relationship,” explained school psychologist Rebecca Branstetter, noting that it’s important to distinguish it from other forms of aggressive behavior or typical childhood conflicts.

Obviously every child who bullies comes from different circumstances and has different reasons for this behavior. There is no one profile of a bully, as each child who engages in this conduct has a unique set of challenges. But there are many common traits and experiences among bullies, and examining them can be beneficial.

Sexual Abuse Against Gay and Bi Men Brings Unique Stigma and Harm

At least 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before their 18th birthday. This number rises to 1 in 4 men across their lifespan.

The rates of sexual abuse and assault are even higher in boys and men from sexual minority populations.

Sexual violation in gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex individuals often complicates their sense of self, and how they fit, or don’t fit, into LGBTQ+ culture and communities. Such abuse may even impact their reaching out for help or reporting traumatic events as they fear stigmatization or victim-blaming.

Indiana Teen Attacked In Locker Room for Being Gay

An Indiana high school student has faced ridicule after being attacked in a locker room for being gay. After other students started circulating video of the incident around school, the teenage boy’s mother shared the story with Indianapolis TV station WTHR.

“I’m not OK, but I will be,” the student told the news outlet.

And he’s telling anyone else who ever finds themselves the victim of a hate crime to stay strong in spirit.

"Stay true to yourself,” he said, “and if you get hit, do the best you can to make sure it never happens again."

The world wonders what's happened to America

What happens to a country that is an idea, when that idea turns ugly?

Since the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the United States has been the leader of the free world economically, militarily, but also -- as communism and fascism fell by the wayside -- as an idea.

They went too far in Iraq in 2003, got too greedy before 2008, and let Syria down in 2013. But still, the US' obsession with painstakingly transparent self-analysis, allocation of blame and rooting out failure, got it back on top. However much you hate it, the idea seemed to justify its existence.

But this has been a difficult month. Well, a difficult year. Actually, scratch that too: everything since November 2016 has been discombobulating. I recall watching American expats, Europeans, Lebanese aghast in Beirut when Donald Trump won. It seemed to them like the wheels were coming off civilization. But surely, they could not forever, as the idea of the United States was designed to be tamper-proof?

Suspended N.J. Police Officer Charged With Murder of 3-Month-Old Daughter

A suspended New Jersey police officer is behind bars in connection with the murder of his three-month-old daughter.

Daniel Bannister, 31, was charged Wednesday in the December 2018 death of Hailey Bannister. Hailey’s mother, Catherine Bannister, 29, was charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

“The nature of Hailey’s injuries indicated an ongoing pattern of abuse,” Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

The Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that Hailey died from complications from blunt impact trauma of the head including skull fractures and subdural hemorrhage.

Med Students Are Doing Vaginal Exams on Unconscious, Non-Consenting Patients

When Ari Silver-Isenstadt was attending the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in the 90s, another student warned him about something that might happen during his OB/GYN rotation: A supervising surgeon might ask him and other students to perform a pelvic exam on a woman under anesthesia without her knowledge or explicit consent. The move would be just for practice and not for her medical benefit. To perform the exam, students insert two gloved fingers into the patient’s vagina and place one hand on her pelvis in order to feel the uterus and ovaries. Multiple medical students might do this, and patients would have no idea any of it happened.

A Kentucky restaurant owner has been arrested after he allegedly kidnapped a black teen from a local grocery store and threatened him with a BB gun.

Fabao Chen, 58, was detained on Tuesday at the Double Dragon restaurant on West Broadway after he took the 13-year-old from a nearby Kroger at 27th and Broadway in Louisville.

An arrest report states that at approximately 4.30pm, Chen forcibly snatched the boy from the store against his will. He can be seen surveillance in footage pulling the boy to his restaurant.

LGBTQ patients reveal their exhausting, infuriating, and surprisingly common struggles at the doctor's office

As a group, LGBTQ people often face worse health outcomes than their straight and cisgender peers.

They also struggle to find doctors who are knowledgeable about these issues.

In some cases, they struggle to find providers who treat them with respect — or even treat them at all.

INSIDER spoke with members of the LGBTQ community to learn about their experiences in doctor's offices.

Today's youth deserve inclusive masturbation education

For a kid, there are few things more awkward than sitting in a sex ed class and learning about masturbation. For a queer or transgender kid, the experience can be simultaneously uncomfortable and painful.

That's because, as some sex educators argue, sex education often fails to address masturbation in an inclusive way. In fact, it may not even be discussed at all. Less than half of American high schools and only one fifth of middle schools teach all 16 sex ed topics from the Center for Disease Control's recommended list. Masturbation isn't even on that list, much less inclusive masturbation education.

"Talking about self-pleasure doesn't happen that much in sex ed," says Andrew Townsend, teen program coordinator for Planned Parenthood Toronto.

By ignoring masturbation and not addressing it in a way that speaks to everyone, sex ed fails our youth. Inclusive sex ed should be a critical component of education, and masturbation should be a core topic. Regardless of gender identity or sexuality, the practice is an essential part of an individual's sexual pleasure.

Majority of LGBTQ people report being sexually harassed in the workplace

A report published yesterday (May 17) on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia revealed that the majority of LGBTQ people in the workplace have been sexually harassed.

The report surveyed 1,000 LGBTQ respondents and 68% said they had faced one type of sexual harassment at work. A lot of these were inappropriate jokes and probing questions about their sex lives.

35% of LGBTQ women reported having experienced unwanted touching, and a further 21% reported some form of sexual assault. A further 12% said they had been either seriously sexually assaulted or raped at work. When compared to men, only 7% reported having been seriously sexually assaulted or raped.

These figures increased significantly when it came to black or minority ethnic women. Out of these, 54% experienced unwanted touching, 45% reported having been sexually assaulted, and a further 27% reported either serious sexual assault or rape.

"Not a big deal": Police commander's text after Eric Garner's death draws gasps at trial

A New York Police Department commander texted "Not a big deal" to an officer in 2014 after learning Eric Garner had most likely died during a police encounter, according to testimony Thursday. CBS radio affiliate WCBS reports there were audible gasps as Lt. Christopher Bannon's texts to Sgt. Dhanan Saminath were displayed during the departmental trial for officer Daniel Pantaleo.

Pantaleo is accused of using a banned chokehold on Garner, which a medical examiner testified this week set into motion "a lethal sequence of events." Garner, a father of six, had been arrested for selling untaxed cigarettes numerous times and was suspected of doing the same when officers approached him, police said. Garner, who had asthma, suffered a heart attack in an ambulance and was pronounced dead at a hospital.
