Man arrested in attack on elderly Asian American woman who blacked out

A man has been arrested in connection with a brutal attack on an elderly Asian American woman in White Plains, New York, police said Friday.

Nancy Toh, 83, was spit on and punched near the Westchester shopping center on Tuesday, police said. She hit the ground hard enough that she "blacked out momentarily," White Plains police Capt. James Spencer said in a statement.

Toh's face and hip were injured, and she possibly suffered a concussion, he said.

Is Being an Older LGBTQ+ Person as Terrifying as It Sounds?

Someone asked me the other day what my favorite movie was, and I immediately said Arthur, like I always do. Then they said, “Never heard of it? When did it come out?” I didn’t answer 1981, nearly 40 years ago. At that moment I felt old, out of date, and superficially shallow.

Thus, I was not surprised by a new report from The Fenway Institute that found older LGBTQ+ adults in the state of Massachusetts have been diagnosed with depression at twice the rate of their straight, cisgender peers. It could be Massachusetts or any other state, or any other country because depression among older LGBTQ+ people is real, and no doubt much more widespread than we ever realize. I always tell people that if it could happen to me, the proverbial life of the party, it can happen to anyone. Having dealt with severe depression, and then having sought out many older LGBTQ+ people who also experienced similar circumstances, I found it remarkable that we all suffered from some sort of PTSD from our youths.

Again, not surprised that the report also found that LGBTQ+ individuals were twice as likely to fall and be injured in a fall over the past year, and I wouldn’t be shocked to hear if some of that was related to dangerous behavior about feeling alone and useless. Another woman, a lesbian, told me that she had a life-threatening operation, and has not been the same since and feels there’s nothing to live for, except her cat, who is 10. Otherwise, she is alone, without her partner who died, and without a family to take care of her. The family has made her feel shame for who she is, and she worries about being alone for the remainder of her life. Some days, she doesn’t feel like getting out of bed, and subsists on her Social Security checks, desperately afraid that she’ll end up in a nursing home left to die. We didn’t discuss it, but I’m sure she feels equal trepidation about not being able to pay the costs of round-the-clock care.

‘Relationships are not for you’: Ten-year-old girl gives her nanny dating advice – and it’s brutal

The girl said: 'And you're still trying with the wrong people. Quit going for younger guys.' She gets so heated she slams her fist on a hard surface as she makes her point.

Her nanny said: 'He's literally, like, seven months younger.'

The girl shared some very wise advice, telling her babysitter to 'get an older rich man so you can live a good life and not end up on the street with this guy you're going to meet that you've never met before that you have feelings for and you're simping for'.

The woman said: 'I don't need an older rich man because I don't care about the money I care about the connection.'

The girl said: 'You're going to end up on the streets and I hope you do.'

Laughing, the woman said: 'I won't end up on the streets. When I end up famous and rich.'

Shouting, the girl said: 'You're not going to get famous because nobody's going to help you. Nobody wants to help you because you go for the wrong people.'

Betty White Thought She Would Die Before Her ‘Golden Girls’ Castmates

Fans of Betty White, former star of The Golden Girls, are often worried about her health. Whenever she trends on Twitter, most of her devoted followers become fearful something terrible has happened to the star. Now that White is close to 100 years old, some are dreading the day her death is announced.

Some might want to avoid the topic, but White has given her death some thought. She once said she thought she would die before her Golden Girls cast mates.

I think the toughest thing about loss, and the hardest challenge, is the isolation you feel in its aftermath. You spent so much time sharing your life with someone, talking through issues, even disagreeing about things, and all of a sudden there’s a hole.

Jane Fonda, 82, says she has no time for sex: 'I’ve had so much of it'

Jane Fonda has no time for crazy sex but that’s okay — she’s had plenty of it.

On Friday, the 82-year-old icon appeared remotely on The Ellen DeGeneres Show hosted by Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish, who filled in for DeGeneres.

"I gotta say, you look amazing,” Haddish, 40, told Fonda. “...I need to know because you look so good, are you still having sex? Are you having, like, crazy sex?"

“No,” answered the actress, giving a thumbs-down. “No, zero...I don’t have time. I’m so old and I’ve had so much of it, I don’t need it right now because I’m too busy.”

Ex-Strictly judge Len Goodman worries same-sex couples will put off older fans. Because apparently everyone over 50 is homophobic

Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman has said older viewers of the BBC series might be put off by same-sex pairings.

The long-running contest announced in September that lesbian boxer Nicola Adams would form one-half of the show’s first ever same-sex couple.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, Goodman said he would only have mixed-gender couples on the show if he had his way.

“A lot of older people are traditionalists – they used to go ballroom dancing and most people’s nans and grandads met probably in a dance hall,” the former judge, who quit the show in 2016, said.

Dad Welcomes Baby With His Daughter’s Ex-Boyfriend

A man has welcomed a baby girl with his daughter's ex-boyfriend, having revealed the happy news on Instagram.

Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, 50, has been in the news previously for his relationship with Scott Hutchinson, 25, who just so happens to be the ex-boyfriend of his eldest daughter Saffron, 20.

Back in March, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together, saying they were using a surrogate who had fallen pregnant on their first attempt.

Older LGBTQ workers face special jeopardy from widespread workplace ageism

Last June’s surprising Supreme Court decision granting LGBTQ employees protection under federal law would seem to put an end to workplace discrimination. But if you’re 50 or older, you may still experience an equally invidious form of discrimination: ageism.

According to a 2018 AARP survey, about three in five workers have experienced age discrimination in their jobs. A whopping 76 percent worried that ageism would hurt their job hunting. That fear is well-grounded. An analysis of employment data by the Urban Institute and ProPublica found that half of older workers were pushed out of jobs and 90 percent of them ended up taking a pay cut when they were finally rehired.

Being an older LGBTQ worker can make things even worse. Out LGBTQ workers have already had to deal with much higher levels of job discrimination and wage disparities. Now, despite the promise of job protections for being LGBTQ, they are finding that the pervasive problem of ageism serves as yet another threat to their careers and financial security.

Worsening the problem is the internalized ageism that many older LGBTQ people carry. A 2015 study of 312 gay men with an average age of 61 found that many felt aging was harder due to the perception that gay men primarily value younger men. No doubt, some of that carries over into the workplace as well.

Mexican president slammed after comments on women staying at home

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Thursday suggested the tradition of women staying at home to take care of older family members was key to battling the coronavirus pandemic, sparking criticism his comments were sexist.

“People want to change women’s role and that is one of the just causes of feminism, but the tradition in Mexico is that daughters are the ones who care the most for parents. We men are more detached,” Lopez Obrador said.

Whereas seniors in nursing homes in Europe had suffered with the pandemic, Mexico’s elders were helped by the custom of being cared for at home, he said, adding that the “Mexican family is the most important social security institution” in the country.

‘They Just Dumped Him Like Trash’: Nursing Homes Evict Vulnerable Residents

On a chilly afternoon in April, Los Angeles police found an old, disoriented man crumpled on a Koreatown sidewalk.

Several days earlier, RC Kendrick, an 88-year-old with dementia, was living at Lakeview Terrace, a nursing home with a history of regulatory problems. His family had placed him there to make sure he got round-the-clock care after his condition deteriorated and he began disappearing for days at a time.

But on April 6, the nursing home deposited Mr. Kendrick at an unregulated boardinghouse — without bothering to inform his family. Less than 24 hours later, Mr. Kendrick was wandering the city alone.

According to three Lakeview employees, Mr. Kendrick’s ouster came as the nursing home was telling staff members to try to clear out less-profitable residents to make room for a new class of customers who would generate more revenue: patients with Covid-19.

‘I just want to talk to someone’ – how coronavirus is increasing isolation among older LGBTQ people

Coronavirus is having a particularly negative effect on older members of the LGBTQ community.

Older people already experience high levels of loneliness and social isolation, but that issue can be even more prevalent among those in the LGBTQ community, who are more likely to not have children and lack family networks.

Now, with lockdown and social-distancing measures in place as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s worried that the problem will become even worse, as visits from loved ones or carers become even less frequent or stop altogether.

Opening Doors London is the largest charity providing information and support to LGBTQ people over the age of 50 in the UK. They’ve had to halt hundreds of face-to-face visits to ensure the safety of their older members and volunteer supporters.

“For some of our members, seeing their befriender or going to one of our groups is the only time in the week that they get to be around other LGBTQ people and feel part of a community who appreciates them for who they are,” explains Befriending Coordinator Meghan Herring.

“Having to suspend our face-to-face activities, we knew that it would be hard on a lot of people. One of our members said, ‘I just want to talk freely to someone to help give my brain a break. I really need to rest it more but my thoughts have nowhere to go’.”

Vampire-obsessed teen murdered 90-year-old, ripped her heart out and drank her blood

A TEENAGE paperboy obsessed with vampires murdered a 90-year-old woman, ripped her heart out and drank her blood in the belief that he would become immortal, a new documentary reveals.

And Mathew Hardman would have gone on to prey on other elderly people had he not been caught for the murder of Mabel Leyshon, described by an officer as one of the most gruesome in British legal history. Mabel had been widowed for 40 years and had lived in her bungalow in Anglesey for 50 years when Hardman broke in as she watched TV on a 2001 December evening. Mabel, hard of hearing, 4ft 9in, and very thin, suffered 22 stab wounds as she tried to defend herself from Hardman, 17.

Gays Must Stop Cheek-Kissing During the Coronavirus Outbreak

The French call it "la bise." For many gay men, it is a customary greeting at Sunday brunch or any other communal gathering: cheek-kissing, where one or both sides of the face receive a smooch from a friend.

However, such a gesture could help spread the outbreak of COVID-19 (or coronavirus disease), say world health officials, who are cautioning against cheek-kissing, hand-shaking, and high-fives.
