Here’s why COVID-19 has a vaccine after 1 year and HIV doesn’t after nearly 40 years
The rapid development of several COVID-19 vaccines has compelled numerous web commenters to accusingly ask why the same hasn’t been done for HIV, a pandemic that has lasted nearly 40 years longer than the coronavirus.
However, a closer look at the different virology of coronavirus and HIV helps explain why the former has a soon-to-be widely available vaccine and the latter doesn’t.
The aforementioned critics often claim that the lack of an HIV vaccine is due to the fact that HIV has most affected men and trans women who have sex with men, Black people, people of color, and intravenous drug users — marginalized people who tend to have less money and political power. Thus, the lack of an HIV vaccine can seem like a conspiratorial way to let these communities die off.

UK issues anaphylaxis warning on Pfizer vaccine after adverse reactions
Britain’s medicine regulator said anyone with a history of anaphylaxis to a medicine or food should not get the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, giving fuller guidance on an earlier allergy warning about the shot.
Starting with the elderly and frontline workers, Britain began mass vaccinating its population on Tuesday, part of a global drive that poses one of the biggest logistical challenges in peacetime history.
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said there had been two reports of anaphylaxis and one report of a possible allergic reaction since rollout began.
“Any person with a history of anaphylaxis to a vaccine, medicine or food should not receive the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine,” MHRA Chief Executive June Raine said in a statement.

NY expects 170K doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine by mid-December
New York expects to receive its first 170,000 doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine from the federal government by mid-December, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday as he expressed doubt about the distribution of the shot throughout the state.
“We expect, if all safety and efficacy approvals are granted, those first doses will arrive by Dec. 15,” Cuomo said during an Albany press briefing.
Since the vaccine requires two doses, a second 170,000 Pfizer doses will be delivered to the state 21 days after the first, said Cuomo.
The Empire State also expects initial allocations of drug company Moderna’s vaccine this month, Cuomo said.
On Monday, Moderna applied to the US Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorization for its coronavirus vaccine, while Pfizer and BioNTech filed their application with the FDA earlier last month for authorization for their COVID-19 vaccine.

No jab? You're barred! Bars, restaurants, cinemas and sports venues could turn away anyone who hasn't had a Covid-19 vaccine, minister warns
Restaurants, bars and cinemas may turn customers away if they have not had a Covid jab, the new minister for the mass vaccine roll-out suggested tonight.
Nadhim Zahawi indicated that although an injection would be voluntary, some venues – including sports grounds – might insist on proof of one in return for granting entry.
The minister said individuals would have to decide for themselves but would be given the 'strong message' that jabs were good for their family, community and country.
Airlines have already been examining the idea of asking for 'immunity passports' as a condition of flying.
