Invisible Man, The (2020)
The blood transfusion works to bring an old tale new life. The invisible remains a figment throughout which makes us suspicious of the scares. (We don't want to jump for nothing.) The great Moss is type stuck in Handmaiden suffering. Horror for a new age, rummaging with bold ideas, technically mapped for complete culmination. 12-Jun-2020
Shipwrecked on Predator Island. Kiersey Clemons flexes survivor strength but the monster is a fishy abstract with animal velocity. Had it contained a bit of instinctual territorial vengeance, it would have crashed the waves. 13-Jun-2020
Birds of Prey (2020)
Robbie is missing the lilt and the energy that would whip Harley Quinn into a showpiece. The women in charge plaster the screen with cartoon abandon, avoid psychoanalyzing themselves and express no vulnerability that would compel a unique perspective. The film lacks a heart. It's like a man directed it. 13-Jun-2020
Uncut Gems (2019)
I feel about jewelry like others feel about watermelons.
The film consisted of many genres, high broiling, at improbable levels. Sandler steadies the flow, not allowing the top to blow off and steering the steam back into action. Talking over each other annoys, the pitch was trembly, the support were emblems, the coincidences were easy to spot and the finale was extensive. It zapped my brain. 28-May-2020
Goldfinch, The (2019)
Boy suffers the loss of his mom, who dies in an explosion, but gains a piece of priceless art. Sarah Paulson has a moment as a bimbo and Nic adds an elegant presence to an adoptive mom but the characters have no foundation for any actor to stem from. The boy, in particular, acts as the scene needs, not as his character would. Ansel achieves a spark because he's trying to understand it as much as we are. It's a hard sell because the mystery doesn't amount to a life altering choice, it just is. A sweet sentiment with absolutely no sugar. 26-May-2020
We The Animals (2018)
Neglectful, abusive parenting and the unruly children it creates. Papi squishes to no avail and mama ponders daddy dick so mightily that she relegates the boys to tools of diversion. The boys are cold specimens meandering the world fantasizing in it or fucking with it because they have no life skills. In the end, we are supposed to celebrate a sexual awakening that smells of molestation. I'm not good with that. 26-Apr-2020
Curse Of La Llorona, The (2019)
The way my mother told it, she was a parent wronged and punished to death for the unproven murder of her children. Drowned in chains, her spirit would periodically roam the streets searching and screaming in agony for her children. The only way to avoid her was to go to sleep at an allotted time, else she take you if awake. It was a technique to get kids to go to bed early.
The kids react well but the jumps aren't supportive. The mumbo jumbo doesn't help. It has ideas that are badly executed. The umbrella trick was its best. A daddy priest husk never hurts but the horror never fucked with my head. 15-Apr-2020
Lobster, The (2015)
Couples rule in a post cruel world. If you don't find a mate they turn you into an animal. Its royal art of weirdness with little justification and a vivid imagination. Colin inherits a comedian's edge, puncturing the establishment in a catatonic state and making us laugh and cheer. Rachel Weisz keeps the heart of the film beating and Yorgos is crazy. 29-Mar-2020
Grave Of The Vampire (1972)
Silliness about a resurrected vamp raping a mod chick that dies delivering his baby. The baby ages into a superhero hunk with little gift of gab and limited supernatural powers. The fair lady hired to scream, couldn't. Fast forward to the fight scene which has Thor mashing a tired Michael Morbius with no effects and generating loads of laughs. 24-Mar-2020
A con for the social sprinters, trifling and influencers. It takes forever to kill one and when they do its not enough. Solid acting keeps you tuned. 11-Mar-2020
Girl On The Third Floor, The (2019)
Haunted shenanigans. Cocky daddy tats gets slimed as the whorehouse he's renovating turns on him. The film's second half reveals how to be worthy of it. 02-Mar-2020
Lion King, The (2019)
Its paced like a cartoon which kills the organic emotional impact because it seems rushed.
The score swelled and stomped on all the sentiments the story was setting. It's hard to feel something when it's already been decided for you.
The baby voices were stronger than their mature counterparts.
The soundtrack sparkled with new modulations.
It's a retread with no originality injected... wrapped in a gorgeous package. 29-Feb-2020
Meet Wally Sparks (1997)
Illogical silliness for a ferocious one liner. The supporting personalities are TV staples flexing their muscles to bozo comedy. Poor things. 19-Jan-2020
Hypnotically rendered but the message doesn't stretch past religious privilege, perversity, addiction and violence. The emotions are vacant and no one has a built-in fight in them. 04-Dec-2019
Someone breaks the peace treaty America made with the aliens by attacking them. The aliens are everything history imagined, the scares are chilling and the relationship held interest. Too bad the characters had to talk. 01-Dec-2019
