Why Customers Are Furious With Kroger And Boycotting Its Stores

On Wednesday, Kroger (KR) named former U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to its board of directors, sparking a flurry of backlash on Twitter from its customers, many of whom said they will no longer shop at the grocer’s stores over the appointment.

People Buy Custom Baby Monkey Torture Videos on World’s Worst Forum

While some of the videos posted to Facebook are upsetting, the content on the forum (which has since been deleted by its host) and Telegram group is genuinely shocking and gruesome. Users are paying to “adopt” baby long-tailed macaques in Indonesia that are then subjected to brutal torture based on their requests. Users can choose between buying their own monkey or a “share” in one.

In one video, a monkey screeches as its finger is cut off. In another, a monkey is kicked repeatedly in the face and then waterboarded. Other videos show, among other things, monkeys being flayed, pierced, cut, beaten, and burned. Other screenshots show a baby monkey tied to a crucifix.

Toxic algae blooms eyed in deaths of family of 3 and their dog on remote California hiking trail

Investigators are considering whether toxic algae blooms or other hazards may have contributed to the deaths of a Northern California couple, their baby and the family dog on a remote hiking trail, authorities said.

The area in the Sierra National Forest where the bodies were found on Tuesday had been treated as a hazmat site after concerns were raised about the deaths being linked to potentially toxic gases from old mines nearby.

Almost 100 Customers Are Sick After Eating at This Popular Fast-Food Chain

Since our first report on Feb. 28 about 40 cases of foodborne illness linked to an Arby's location in Springfield, Ill., dozens of more customers have fallen ill, forcing the fast-food restaurant to close for the second time in less than a month.

According to Food Safety News, almost 100 cases of illness have now been reported from the specific Arby's location, and while the source of the contamination is still unknown, health officials have stated the pathogen in question is norovirus. The virus is highly contagious and spreads easily, making it difficult to eradicate.

Target pulling products allegedly made with forced monkey labor

Target will no longer sell coconut milk made by the Thai company Chaokoh after an investigation alleged the drink is tied to forced monkey labor, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals announced Monday.

“By dropping Chaokoh, Target is joining thousands of stores that refuse to profit from chained monkeys’ misery,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman wrote in a statement.

Toxic 'forever chemicals' detected in half of US makeup, study finds

More than half the cosmetics sold in the United States and Canada are awash with a toxic industrial compound associated with serious health conditions, including cancer and reduced birth weight, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Notre Dame tested more than 230 commonly used cosmetics and found that 56% of foundations and eye products, 48% of lip products and 47% of mascaras contained fluorine — an indicator of PFAS, so-called "forever chemicals" that are used in nonstick frying pans, rugs and countless other consumer products.

Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect

At the beginning of next year, California will begin enforcing an animal welfare proposition approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018 that requires more space for breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves. National veal and egg producers are optimistic they can meet the new standards, but only 4% of hog operations now comply with the new rules. Unless the courts intervene or the state temporarily allows non-compliant meat to be sold in the state, California will lose almost all of its pork supply, much of which comes from Iowa, and pork producers will face higher costs to regain a key market.

Subway's Tuna Sandwiches Were Tested Again. No Tuna DNA Was Found

Earlier this year, two women filed a lawsuit against Subway, alleging that the Connecticut-based sandwich chain's tuna sandwiches and wraps didn't contain any actual tuna. The Washington Post reported that their attorney purchased tuna sandwiches from multiple Subway locations in California, and then submitted the fish in question to an independent lab for testing.

Although the attorney declined to discuss the exact findings with the Post, she did say that the tests revealed that the sandwich filler was "not tuna" and "not fish." The resulting lawsuit alleged that Subway's tuna was "a mixture of various concoctions that do not constitute tuna, yet have been blended together by defendants to imitate the appearance of tuna."

Multi-state salad dressing recall issued because of a bizarre contaminant

Food recalls can happen for any number of reasons, but many times they are issued due to undeclared allergens. It can be something as simple as not having milk or nuts listed on the label, leaving people with allergies to those products unaware that they may be harmed if they consume it. That’s the case with a new recall for Brite Harbor Caesar Dressing & Dip.

Your Cat Is Making Your Kids Stupid, Says Science

For years, scientific studies have warned pregnant women about the possible effects of toxoplasmosis (a disease found in kitty litter) on their unborn child.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that toxoplasmosis can lead to serious illnesses such as blindness, hearing loss, mental disabilities, and psychosis.

Most children do not show symptoms of toxoplasmosis. If they show any symptoms, they usually include swollen lymph glands, fatigue, and muscle aches.

In teens, it can cause chorioretinitis, which is a rare symptom that consists of blurred vision and dark spots floating in front of your child's eyes.

Peach recall expanding over possible salmonella contamination after 78 sickened in 12 states

A peach recall has expanded to include loose peaches and peach products after 78 people were sickened in 12 states by salmonella poisoning linked to the fruit, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

Of the 78 reported cases of illness traced back to the potentially tainted fruit between June 29 and Aug. 3, 23 victims were hospitalized, the CDC reported. No deaths have been reported. Victims ranged in age from one to 92 years old.

The agency is warning that more salmonella poisonings are possible. "Illnesses might not yet be reported due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported. This takes an average of 2 to 4 weeks," the CDC said.

"Epidemiologic evidence indicates that peaches are the likely source of this outbreak."

FDA Announces Recall of Frozen Shrimp Sold in Major U.S. Grocery Chains

First onions, now shrimp: Making ceviche this summer is turning out to be a total nightmare. (Along with everything else.) The FDA has announced a major recall of frozen shrimp sold to large grocery chains including Costco and Kirkland. The questionable crustaceans are said to be potentially infected with salmonella—an organism that can cause fever, nausea, upset stomach, and even fatality in some rare cases.

The recall went into effect last Wednesday and includes various sizes of frozen cooked, peeled, and deveined shrimp sold in 1-, 1.5-, and 2-pound retail bags that originated from Kader Exports. The shrimp is said to have been distributed starting in late February through the middle of May and then sold by major grocery chains nationwide. A full list of the recalled products containing Kader Exports frozen shrimp can be found here.
