SF outlaws reusable bags, which the city once championed

San Francisco, which once championed reusable shopping bags to reduce plastic waste, has banned the environmentally friendly totes in an effort to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

An amendment to the city’s Department of Health’s social-distancing protocols requires that stores restrict customers from bringing their own bags, mugs or other reusable items from home.

How the ban affects city's prohibition on plastic bags is not clear — the ordinance did not address that regulation. In 2007, San Francisco became the first major city in the nation to outlaw single-use plastic bags.

Most Americans will stay home this month even if lockdown lifted: poll

A majority of Americans are hunkering down and say they will continue to social distance or stay at home even if lockdown orders are lifted, according to a new poll.

While 87% of the American public is staying home — regardless of whether or not it’s mandated by state or local municipalities — most plan on continuing to do so for all of April, according to the poll taken by the Huffington Post/YouGov survey.

If you truly believe that God will grant you immunity from this pandemic, you shouldn't waste that superpower in church... use it to save people. Last I checked, God doesn't live in a church. He's in the heart you must've misplaced. 04-Apr-2020

‘Shoot them dead,’ Philippine’s Duterte warns coronavirus lockdown violators

In a televised address, Duterte said it was vital everyone cooperates and follows home quarantine measures, as authorities try to slow the coronavirus contagion and spare the country's fragile health system from being overwhelmed.

The Philippines has recorded 96 coronavirus deaths and 2,311 confirmed cases, all but three in the past three weeks, with infections now being reported in the hundreds every day.

"It is getting worse. So once again I'm telling you the seriousness of the problem and that you must listen," Duterte said late on Wednesday.

"My orders to the police and military ... if there is trouble and there's an occasion that they fight back and your lives are in danger, shoot them dead."

"Is that understood? Dead. Instead of causing trouble, I will bury you."

Michael Rapaport Drops 24 F-Bombs In Angry Rant Against Coronavirus Revelers

Public health officials are urging people to remain inside as much as possible to prevent the spread of coronavirus, yet news footage shows crowded parks and beaches in some places.

And actor Michael Rapaport is pretty angry about the whole thing.

Readers be warned: Rapaport’s language is salty.

“Get your little, dirty, fucking grubby, selfish, YOLO fucking dumb tattooed faces in the fucking house,” he said, addressing younger people.

And parents? You’re not off the hook, either.

“Parents, get your fucking kids,” Rapaport said. “This nice guy shit? It’s done. Get your fucking kids in the fucking house.”

"We Can't Be Silent": Asian Americans in Hollywood Denounce "Chinese Virus" and Racist Incidents

"I want us all to understand there is no 'Chinese Virus.' A virus knows no nationality, and wherever and however it started, it does us no good to point fingers, ostracize, attack or demonize Asian people."

Shannon Lee, daughter of martial arts film star Bruce Lee, recently wrote this message on her late father's Instagram, offering a not-so-subtle criticism of President Donald Trump and senior members of his administration who have continually referred to the novel coronavirus — which has caused a global pandemic comprising almost half a million confirmed cases of the disease COVID-19 and over 20,000 deaths — as a "Chinese virus," despite the World Health Organization's warning against using geographic locations when naming illnesses.

The phrase is now linked to a wave of racist attacks against Asians and Asian Americans, from hate-filled messages on social media platforms to physical assaults in public.

The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur tweeted about his children being bullied by classmates. Weijia Jiang, CBS News' White House correspondent, revealed that a White House official had referred to the coronavirus as the "Kung Flu" "to my face." Actor Daniel Dae Kim, who recently tested positive for the novel coronavirus, wrote that it had been "too heartbreaking" to initially comment on the "blatant acts of racism against Asian people during this outbreak."

Wilson Chandler neighbor defends building manager after Twitter tirade

Wilson Chandler’s neighbors are rushing to the defense of his condo building’s manager after the Nets star bashed her in a furious tweet.

A day after four of his teammates tested positive for the coronavirus, a staffer at his One Brooklyn Bridge Park building allegedly called Chandler in his apartment. He later tweeted, “Building manager called me saying ‘Oh, I seen Nets players had the virus. We would like to know your status. And if you could possibly stay out of the lobby etc. We can’t afford to lose our staff.’”

But one condo owner in the building — which is also reportedly home to Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis, and formerly housed then-Nets, now-Bulls star Thaddeus Young — said of the staffer, “She is always professional and courteous and only wants to protect everybody who lives in our building.”

Police Launch Investigation Into Video of Teenagers Coughing on Produce at Grocery Store

Following reports of teenagers coughing on produce at a local grocery store for a video, one Virginia police department has launched an investigation. On Thursday, Purcellville PD released a statement to say it had learned the incident took place at an undisclosed store on Wednesday. Employees at the store removed the items immediately, and now officials have asked parents to monitor their children's activities and social media accounts in order to "avoid the increase of any further such incidents."

"We have learned that this appears to be a disturbing trend on social media across the country, and we ask for help from parents to discourage this behavior immediately," Purcellville police wrote in a Facebook post. "Please talk with your children and explain to them why such behavior is wrong, especially given the current situation regarding the spread of Coronavirus."

Coronavirus outbreak revives dangerous race myths and pseudoscience

The news last week that NBA player Rudy Gobert, a Frenchman of Caribbean heritage, had tested positive for the coronavirus shattered a myth that some of the world's more conspiracy-minded had circulated online through jokes, news stories and social media posts.

Black people are not, in fact, immune to the coronavirus.

On Tuesday, the Afro-British actor Idris Elba, who lives part time in the United States and tested positive for COVID-19 this week, posted on social media about his early lack of symptoms and subsequent changes, how he managed to be tested, the dangers of the disease — and the myth of black immunity.

Variations on the immunity myth — claims that black worshipers can't be infected at church where a pastor refused to cancel in-person services and false assertions that there are zero COVID-19 infections in Africa to name a few — remain on the internet along with other fantastical ideas. The myth of group immunity may, public health, disease control and bioethicists say, provide some people with a bit of levity or sense of control in a seemingly dire time. But the risk of false information circulating in any form far outweighs the value of a few chuckles or nerve-calming denial.

Baltimore mayor to residents: Please stop shooting each other — we need hospital beds for coronavirus patients

In a news conference Wednesday, Baltimore Mayor Jack Young pleaded with residents to stop shooting each other so that the city's limited number of hospital beds could be used to treat those suffering from COVID-19.

His plea came alongside a declaration of emergency in Baltimore as the city reported its fifth confirmed coronavirus case and is experiencing evidence of a growing community spread.

"I want to reiterate how completely unacceptable the level of violence is that we have seen recently," Young said, according to WJZ-TV. "We will not stand for mass shootings and an increase in crime."

Baltimore has seen an uptick in violence since Friday, according to city Commissioner Michael Harrison. The violence included a mass shooting Tuesday night that resulted in seven victims needing to be transported to hospitals and are in serious but stable condition.

"For those of you who want to continue to shoot and kill people of this city, we're not going to tolerate it," Young said. "We're going to come after you and we're going to get you."

Using tote bags instead of plastic could help spread the coronavirus

The COVID-19 outbreak is giving new meaning to those “sustainable” shopping bags that politicians and environmentalists have been so eager to impose on the public. These reusable tote bags can sustain the COVID-19 and flu viruses — and spread the viruses throughout the store.

Researchers have been warning for years about the risks of these bags spreading deadly viral and bacterial diseases, but public officials have ignored their concerns, determined to eliminate single-use bags and other plastic products despite their obvious advantages in reducing the spread of pathogens. In New York state, a new law took effect this month banning single-use plastic bags in most retail businesses, and this week Democratic state legislators advanced a bill that would force coffee shops to accept consumers’ reusable cups — a practice that Starbucks and other chains have wisely suspended to avoid spreading the COVID-19 virus.

John Flanagan, the Republican leader of the New York state Senate, has criticized the new legislation and called for a suspension of the law banning plastic bags. “Senate Democrats’ desperate need to be green is unclean during the coronavirus outbreak,” he said Tuesday, but so far he’s been a lonely voice among public officials.

What Exactly Is a Vasectomy? Here's What You Need to Know

March is in full swing, and while you're probably noticing warmer days, longer nights, and all the hoopla around college basketball playoffs, there's something else going on this time of year you might not be aware of: vasectomies. According to a 2018 study, March is one of the most popular times of the year for men to get a vasectomy.

So what is it about March Madness that makes men think about birth control, and what does it involve?

For starters, the urologists we spoke to who perform vasectomies say they've never noticed the March uptick. “While some men may have used March Madness as an excuse to get their vasectomy and use the recovery time to watch collegiate basketball, the vast majority will undergo the procedure when convenient,” S. Adam Ramin, MD, urologic surgeon and medical director of Urology Cancer Specialists in Los Angeles, tells Health.
