Outcry over racial data grows as virus slams black Americans

As the coronavirus tightens its grip across the country, it is cutting a particularly devastating swath through an already vulnerable population — black Americans.

Democratic lawmakers and community leaders in cities hard-hit by the pandemic have been sounding the alarm over what they see as a disturbing trend of the virus killing African Americans at a higher rate, along with a lack of overall information about the race of victims as the nation’s death toll mounts.

Among the cities where black residents have been hard-hit: New York, Detroit, New Orleans, Chicago and Milwaukee.

“Everywhere we look, the coronavirus is devastating our communities,” said Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP.

Coronavirus hits poor, minority communities harder

The coronavirus doesn't discriminate, but minorities and low-income families are bearing the brunt.

Why it matters: The impact of the coronavirus is reflecting the racial and socioeconomic disparities of the cities where it’s spreading and the health care system that’s struggling to contain it.

The big picture: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week called the virus “the great equalizer,” because anyone can get it. And while it’s true everyone’s at risk, New York itself is a stark illustration of just how unequal the virus’ toll really is.

The highest concentration of cases in New York City are in neighborhoods in Queens with large immigrant populations and low average incomes, according to city data analyzed by the Wall Street Journal.

And New York is not alone.

By the numbers: Nationwide demographic data aren’t available, and the quality of state and local recordkeeping varies widely. But the clear trend in preliminary data from multiple metro areas is hard to ignore.

The county that contains Charlotte, N.C. is about 33% black, but black residents make up roughly 44% of its coronavirus cases, according to the Charlotte Observer.

States declare churches “essential” to exempt them from coronavirus prevention measures

As more states order people to stay home as much as possible and close down commerce to prevent the spread of coronavirus, some states are making sure there’s an exemption for church services.

Countries all over the world have been grappling with temporarily suspending church services, which bring hundreds, even thousands, of people together in small spaces, often touching many of the same objects.

But the desire to slow the spread of the disease is butting up against reticence to ask religious people to make sacrifices in a time of crisis.

In Florida, a stay-at-home order set to go in effect tomorrow will allow people to leave their homes to exercise, take care of pets, and attend “religious services conducted in churches, synagogues, and houses of worship.”

Group Behind NYC Central Park Tent Hospital Makes Workers Adhere to ‘Statement of Faith’ That Says Gays Will Burn in Hell

Samaritan’s Purse, the group funding and erecting the makeshift coronavirus tent hospital in New York City’s Central Park, makes all workers, including health care providers, “read and adhere” to a statement of faith that says gay people will burn in Hell. Samaritan’s Purse is run by “Christian” homophobe Franklin Graham.

Gothamist reports: “Graham, the son of prominent minister Billy Graham, has specifically sought to recruit Christian medical staff to the Central Park facility. According to the group’s website, all volunteers, including health care workers, should read and adhere to a statement of faith, in which marriage is defined as ‘exclusively the union of one genetic male and one genetic female’ and the unrighteous are sentenced to ‘everlasting punishment in hell.'”

Ed Asner Urges Trump Not to Kill Betty White

Ed Asner would very much like Betty White to live. Also Carl Reiner, William Shatner, Mel Brooks, and Cloris Leachman. Oh, and himself.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Emmy-winning TV legend (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Lou Grant) directed a tweet at Donald Trump in response to the president’s comments which insinuated that he plans to reopen the country in weeks. Doing so would defy the pleas of public health experts and put vulnerable populations of the country, including the elderly, at higher risk of deadly battles with the novel coronavirus.

How to be queer and celibate

Queer people -- and particularly trans people -- are often introduced to sex in a way that can skew their relationship with it later down the line. For trans people that can manifest in the form of relationships with “chasers”: cis men who see trans bodies as a purely carnal, rather than emotional thing to engage with. Heteronormative and cis-Eurocentric ideals of dating often make it feel like if you’re not in a relationship, you’re not worthy of one. As a result, you end up reaching out to whoever is willing to give intimacy as a way to feel like you are, too, part of the expected normality.

At this point in my life, my relationship with sex is skewed. Fucked, if you will. As I lay on my back looking into the mirrored ceiling, wondering whether or not dinner is going to be fish and chips or the leftover stir-fry from the night before, I forget that there’s a person in between my legs. Another late night turned into a hook-up that means nothing. Another person to avoid when trotting around the supermarket next week. It makes me ponder whether or not celibacy could be the answer to my problems. Like many people who have negative or harmful relationships with sex, I’ve been asking myself: is going cold-turkey the best way to sort it out?

A lot of young queer people are switching up the way we see casual sex. Research in the US of LGBTQ+ students at college saw that they were more likely to ensure their 'hook-ups' were the antithesis of heteronormative: focusing more on communication and discussion and sometimes not even including sex at all. Celibacy is often confused with asexuality, an orientation in which someone may experience romantic feelings -- but not physical, sexual attraction. Voluntary celibacy, however, is something that queer people actively choose to partake in, as a reaction to their complex sexual history.

Legalise sex toys and pornography to cut rape, says Thai MP

A Thai MP has proposed legalising sex toys and pornography as a way to cut rape offences and other sexual assaults.

Treerat Sirichantaropas, a spokesman for a committee tasked with combating rape, said in a Facebook post on Monday he believed legalising pornography and sex toys would help to cut the number of sexual assault cases reported in the country.

Treerat, who is also secretary of the Pheu Thai Plus think tank, said about 30,000 rape cases were reported every year, the majority of them filed by victims aged between 15 and 19 years.

The Amish Keep to Themselves. And They’re Hiding a Horrifying Secret

The memories come to her in fragments. The bed creaking late at night after one of her brothers snuck into her room and pulled her to the edge of her mattress. Her underwear shoved to the side as his body hovered over hers, one of his feet still on the floor.

Her ripped dresses, the clothespins that bent apart on her apron as another brother grabbed her at dusk by the hogpen after they finished feeding the pigs. Sometimes she’d pry herself free and sprint toward the house, but “they were bigger and stronger,” she says. They usually got what they wanted.

As a child, Sadie* was carefully shielded from outside influences, never allowed to watch TV or listen to pop music or get her learner’s permit. Instead, she attended a one-room Amish schoolhouse and rode a horse and buggy to church—a life designed to be humble and disciplined and godly.

MILEY CYRUS WON’T HAVE CHILDREN BECAUSE ‘THE EARTH IS ANGRY’

The "Mother’s Daughter" singer said the planet has been depleted and that she will not have children “until I feel like my kid would live on an earth with fish in the water”.

“We’ve been doing the same thing to the earth that we do to women. We just take and take and expect it to keep producing. And it’s exhausted. It can’t produce,” the 26-year-old said. “We’re getting handed a piece-of-shit planet, and I refuse to hand that down to my child.

America’s Got Talent finalist Brian Justin Crum has a very special message for US President Donald Trump.

‘Fuck you Donald Trump,’ he exclusively told Gay Star News. ‘You will not erase us and you will not silence us.’

Crum then added: ‘My goals as a cisgender white male is to dive into my community and learn how I can be of better service to the queer people of color and trans community.

‘My heart is being pulled to activism and I just want to learn how I can be more of service,’ he said.

The Right-Wing Is Weaponizing Gender Panic

The Trump Administration’s leaked gender memo, the recent transgender military ban, and the expansion of the global gag rule aren’t coincidences. They are part of a well-coordinated, funded global movement designed to control our communities by restricting the rights and bodily autonomy of women, LGBTQI communities, and people of color — eerily reminiscent of Reagan era oppressive tactics.

For LGBTQI communities, this kind of backlash is not new. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, the Reagan administration demonized our communities, as did right-wing forces around the world, spreading the false notion of the "gay plague" and blaming men who have sex with men for the transmission of the HIV virus. LGBT people were denied equal access to healthcare, faced intense violence, were stigmatized, stripped of basic rights, and often forced into the shadows. But we fought back.

Today, we know the far-right are sewing those same seeds of paranoia, creating gender panic with the use of an intentionally ambiguous organizing framework termed "gender ideology"by some and "anti-gender ideology" by others. Originating in the 1990s, gender ideology is a construct that depicts efforts to expand rights for women, LGBTQI people, and people of color, as radical, dangerous, and elitist, arguing that we are a threat to traditional family values.

You don’t have to march at Pride to show your pride

I remember being squashed between a mass of people on one side and the glass window of a sushi restaurant on the other.

I remember grabbing a handful of rainbow flags and raising them above my head.

Then, I remember hearing the names of the fallen recited and repeated by a mournful crowd. I remember the London vigil for the Pulse shooting as if it was yesterday.

The events of that weekend shook me to the core and pushed me to make a commitment I’d been putting off for a while. I pledged to become a queer activist.

23% of young black women in the US now identify as bisexual

According to the latest General Social Survey, 23% of black women between 18 and 34 in the US now identify as bisexual.

The scientists who conducted the study said the figure in the recent survey was three times higher than previously.

The survey, which is carried out every couple years, asks respondents about everything from race relations to drug use.

In 2008, the survey started including a question on sexual identity, according to African American news site, The Grio.

‘As sociologists who study sexuality, we’ve noticed how more and more women are reporting that they’re bisexual’, The Grio reported the scientists as saying.

LGBTQ patients reveal their exhausting, infuriating, and surprisingly common struggles at the doctor's office

As a group, LGBTQ people often face worse health outcomes than their straight and cisgender peers.

They also struggle to find doctors who are knowledgeable about these issues.

In some cases, they struggle to find providers who treat them with respect — or even treat them at all.

INSIDER spoke with members of the LGBTQ community to learn about their experiences in doctor's offices.
