Business owners threaten to stop paying taxes until leaders address crime
In San Fransisco, one of the metros hardest hit by the recent crime wave, staff and customers are sick and tired of crime — burglaries, vandalism and even assaults.
In the historic Castro district in San Francisco, business owners say they plan to stop paying taxes unless city leaders address the crime crisis, saying city leaders are neglecting their duty to curb crime and they are the ones paying the price.

Bachelorette parties are destroying LGBTQ safe spaces
White women in queer spaces, often seek a drunken night out without the worry of harassment and assault from heterosexual men.
These parties can generate lots of money for queer venues and drag queens. However, after conducting research in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the researchers found that these parties can also destroy queer safe spaces that LGBTQ communities have long sought to establish. The researchers call this process “hetrification.”

The New York Public Library will keep six controversial Dr. Seuss books on the shelves despite this week’s decision to cease their publication due to racist imagery.
The library, which serves Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island, said it does not censor books and will keep the controversial titles in circulation until they are no longer in suitable shape to lend out, a spokeswoman said.

Celebrity quarantine posts are inflaming tensions between the haves and have-nots
In recent weeks, Anatasia Army, 33, has kept tabs on celebrity social media exploits from the safety of her Brooklyn apartment. She saw when billionaire David Geffen shared his hope that “everyone is staying safe” in an Instagram post uploaded from his $590 million superyacht. And when comedian Ellen DeGeneres compared quarantine to “being in jail.” Most recently, she watched House Speaker Nancy Pelosi inadvertently reveal in a TV segment that she owns two industrial refrigerators, each reportedly worth $12,000.
“As soon as I saw that number, I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, I could live on that,’” Army, a babysitter, says. While public displays of wealth have often elicited backlash, the coronavirus pandemic has changed the context almost overnight. A luxury kitchen appliance, Army says, “takes on a new tenor” when lines for food banks stretch for half a mile and the nonprofit hunger relief organization Feeding America estimates that an additional 17.1 million Americans may soon be struggling to eat.
The internet has provided many of us with a much-needed tether to other people and places in the midst of the pandemic, but social media is also playing another role: It has become a catalyst for anger as it exposes the growing chasm between the haves and have-nots. For every video call with a loved one, there’s accumulating evidence of unfairness as people in quarantine reveal their starkly different isolation experiences.

We speak to the gay men who pretended to be girls online to flirt with boys
Growing up in the closet can be an isolating experience. So, in the early days of social media, it’s little surprise that some gay men resorted to unorthodox methods to explore their attraction to other boys.
Thomas* is one of them. As a closeted teenager, he used to “catfish” boys by pretending to be a girl online. “I was really desperate and lonely,” he says, telling me that early social media sites such as Bebo were where he started this behaviour. “I’d add them over MSN Messenger and flirt. It was a thrill at the time, I guess, though I’m really ashamed of it now.”
Thomas says he was mostly interested in talking, but the boys he catfished would usually turn the conversation sexual. “It wouldn’t take long for the horny straight boys to ask for nude photos,” he says. “But I initially just wanted an outlet to talk to cute boys because I couldn’t. While all my friends were getting off with each other and going out, I just wanted someone to talk to me in the same way.”
