Invaders From Mars (1953)
To watch this film you have to tap into your child and understand the limitations of its time. It gets to business almost immediately, all is accepted at face value and good and evil hold to their lanes. It has a great start and there are enough influences to accommodate its art but the martians are silly. 10-Oct-2019
What if Alexa/Siri manipulated you into killing? A laugh shower, a mind splitter and amusement park bunk. When cell phones battle at end, it's ridiculous but it's also an idea. 06-Oct-2019
Paddington 2 (2018)
The more disbelief you suspend the higher the flight when it takes off. Hugh's broadness is wide, Paddington's reasoning wears thin but the artful care keeps it vivid. 06-Oct-2019
Green Book (2018)
I was predetermined to quit and I almost did at the beginning of Philadelphia but the film had an insistence on allocating an interracial message of unity. Ali rendered a painfully stoic sexual conundrum with too much high and no might. His fingers were the only part of his body trying to throb his character to life. He needed to fill the holes inherited by a lack of backstory. Mortensen breaks through the wrappings to inhabit but the tonal enthusiasm and scrunched up faces spawn 2D animation. It was funny, I drifted with the conversations, history was respected but I never once felt any of it happened. A slow seduction would have blown everything out of the park.
PS: If it makes everyone feel equal to be unpretty then we should stop saying "the magic of Hollywood." 29-Sep-2019
Don't Knock Twice (2016)
Katee Sackhoff distributed guilt, anger and appeasement to a character that didn't need it and it's appreciated. The director clangs the scares and the mythology works but the whole doesn't satisfy like the details. 26-Sep-2019
I don't understand why turning from a kid to an adult makes you goofy, especially if the youngster displays no sign of it. The corn and rah almost dismisses its significance but its ease and audacity of violence clinches it. 22-Sep-2019
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
The presentation is a pristine and elegant throwback to the great traditions that made us and the new ones that maintain us. Actor likability is high, writing vibrates and its style is effervescent. 14-Sep-2019
Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse (2018)
The soundtrack doesn't bother to incorporate itself, Peter Parker sounds froggy but the art reaches magnificence. 11-Jul-2019
There are tidbits I didn't know. Child genius, warped sensibilities and family hypocrisy. The catalog is immense as is the concept of each song. Many odes to so many things only we can remember. The razzle dazzle is there, the actor siphons the legend's anger and the music remains inspired. A life worth celebrating. 05-Jul-2019
Calamity Jane (1953)
The tunes are zippy, the production is cartoony and energized but the whole is detached from reality. It's overcompensating for a loss. 18-Jun-2019
Matrix Reloaded, The (2003)
Amped up but incomplete. 12-Jun-2019
Matrix, The (1999)
It maintains its relevance because it sounds like truth. It ripped the adventure sport apart, it stamped itself fresh repeatedly and we were overtook with joy and appreciation for the artistry of clean work. From kool to kickass is the process. 11-Jun-2019
Lilo & Stitch (2002)
A little off-kilter, one of a kind and a charming diversion. 07-Jun-2019
New York is golden and all else is diamond. It allows you to believe that love always happens.
(Dude, Cher's in it.) 06-Jun-2019
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Cavalcade of superheroism, delineation and valediction of character, celebratory milestones and sentimental affection. CGI triumphs achieving Hulk fuckability and Thor squishiness. A rousing crowd pleaser. 04-May-2019
