Kids' mental health at risk of becoming America's next culture war

The pandemic has created a greater sense of urgency around children's mental health, but statistics have been trending in the wrong direction for years, with sometimes tragic consequences for families and communities.

School-based efforts that have been shown to support kids' mental, social and emotional health are getting pulled into a broader debate about what happens in public school classrooms and guidance counselors' offices.

High-profile state legislation, like Texas' law equating transgender care with child abuse and Florida's law prohibiting "classroom discussions about sexual orientation or gender identity" before fourth grade have sparked outrage among mental health professionals concerned about their impact on children and families.

Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors resigns amid controversy

The embattled co-founder of Black Lives Matter announced on Thursday that she’s resigning as executive director amid criticism over her lavish lifestyle.

But her resignation comes amid controversy over the group’s finances and Cullors’ personal wealth — including an alleged real-estate buying spree in which she snagged four high-end homes for $3.2 million in the US, according to property records reported last month.

The foundation said it ended 2020 with a balance of more than $60 million, after spending nearly a quarter of its assets on operating expenses, grants to Black-led organizations and other charitable giving.

Critics of the foundation contend more of that money should have gone to the families of Black victims of police brutality who have been unable to access the resources needed to deal with their trauma and loss.

More Americans are telling their boss to shove it. Is the workplace undergoing a revolution—or just a post-pandemic spasm?

Quitting your job is hot this summer. More Americans quit in May than any other month on record going back to the beginning of the century, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For every 100 workers in hotels, restaurants, bars, and retailers, about five of them quit last month.

Low-wage workers aren’t the only ones eyeing the door. In May, more than 700,000 workers in the bureau’s mostly white-collar category of “professional and business services” left their job—the highest monthly number ever. Across all sectors and occupations, four in 10 employees now say they’ve considered peacing out of their current place of work.

Up and down the income ladder, workers have new reasons to tell their boss to shove it.

Publix Heiress Spent $150K on GOP Attorneys General Org to Promote Jan. 6 March

A conservative donor who is the heiress to the Publix Super Market empire appears to have spent more money to support the Jan. 6 rally that preceded the Capitol riots than was previously known. Julie Jenkins Fancelli gave $150,000 to the non-profit arm of the Republican Attorneys General Association, according to records reviewed by The Washington Post, a donation that may have paid for a robocall urging people to march on the U.S. Capitol to force Congress to “stop the steal.” That’s in addition to a $300,000 donation Fancelli made to the event’s organizers.
