Showtime fires Paulie Malignaggi over controversial remarks on racism, racial oppression

Showtime Boxing returns tonight (August 1st) from Uncasville, CT with a vacant WBO bantamweight title between Tramaine Williams and Angelo Leo as the main event, but the broadcast will not feature Paulie Malignaggi’s analysis. In fact, Showtime has axed Malignaggi altogether.

Boxing Scene first reported that the retired former world champion was removed from Showtime Boxing broadcasts for comments he made back in April in an IFL TV interview that he apparently refused to apologize for. When the apology wasn’t issued, Showtime gave Malignaggi the boot. Abner Mares will take his place at least for tonight’s broadcast.

Now we get to Paulie. He directly addressed Haney’s comments by saying that through boxing history, the sport has been dominated by different racial/ethnic groups, and he claims that African-American fighters are no longer the dominant force in boxing like they were in the 30-50 years ago.

There’s a Divide in Even the Closest Interracial Friendships Including ours.

It was one of those perfect California nights, not too cold or too hot. Ann’s backyard was strung with lights and punctuated with the cheerful buzz of conversation as people milled around with glasses of rosé in hand. She had offered up her patio as the venue for a friend’s birthday party. And—even better—Aminatou happened to be in town. She was in Los Angeles for a work trip and had been looking forward to attending the backyard soiree because she knew and liked the birthday girl and many of the other guests.

When she showed up, the party was already in full swing. Aminatou found that the snacks were delicious and the mood lovely. But what should have been a fun night celebrating and catching up with friends turned sour when Aminatou noticed that she was the only Black person milling around Ann’s back patio.

Two Texas police officers fatally shot while responding to a domestic disturbance

Two police officers in McAllen, Texas, were killed while answering a domestic disturbance call Saturday afternoon, according to the police chief.

The officers were shot by a suspect as they approached the door of a home, McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said during a press conference Saturday evening.

"The officers never had a chance to suspect a deadly assault on them, much less death, at that moment in time," a very emotional Rodriguez told reporters.

HGTV’s Erin Napier Is ‘Turning Off’ Instagram Comments Until 2021 After Calling Out Trolls

Erin Napier knows social media can be a dark place — and now she’s taking matters into her own hands and changing the way people can interact with her posts.

The Home Town star, 34, previously opened up about Instagram bullies having taken an emotional toll on her, and on Thursday morning she announced on that platform that she’s taking significant steps towards taming those trolls by turning off comments on her posts until 2021.

“Turning off comments till 2021 feels like a good move,” she captioned a photo of her and her husband (and HGTV co-star), Ben, 37. “It’s getting harder to shoulder every opinion from every direction at all times about everything when everyone is freaking out constantly. There’s too much noise.”

She used an analogy to explain how social media can be deceiving, and explained that commenters often react without seeing the full picture.

Keke Palmer Responds to August Alsina: 'I Feel Attacked, But It's Not About Me' (UPDATE)

Keke Palmer appears to have responded to August Alsina's scathing tweets via Instagram, writing "I want to post screenshots, but I won’t."

Seems like Keke's taking the high road on this one, adding that she'd spare the singer by recognizing that he's probably going through it right now given this whole Red Table Talk situation.

"Yes girl. August was never my man lol," she wrote. "That’s why you’re still reaching to this day to figure out nothing."

"U absolutely right.I was NEVER ur man," he responded. "You could possibly never shortie. It seems u mad u got curved,

260,000 sign petition to block film starring Paris Jackson as Jesus

A forthcoming film starring Paris Jackson as Jesus has been denounced as “Christianophobic garbage” in an online petition to prevent its release, which has attracted more than 260,000 signatures.

The casting of Jackson, a model and actor who is the daughter of the late pop star Michael Jackson, opposite Bella Thorne and musician Gavin Rossdale in the film Habit was announced in April. The plot synopsis suggests that Thorne plays a “street smart party girl with a Jesus fetish [who] gets mixed up in a violent drug deal and finds a possible way out by masquerading as a nun”. Jackson’s “gender-bending take on the religious figure” was reported to include “a nose ring, tousled waves and a traditional robe”.

The petition, which names Warner Bros and Lionsgate as its targets, claims that Jackson will play Jesus as a “lesbian”, though there is no mention of this in any publicly available reports of the film. The petition also claims the film is “blasphemous” and that it is “Christianophobic garbage that is spread nowadays, but is somehow accepted and praised by society”.

Mother Denied Service Because Of Her Son’s ‘Athletic’ Clothes Hires Civil Rights Attorney

Following the apology by a Baltimore restaurant, after the manager refused service to a Black woman, Marcia Grant, and her son, Dallas, because of his “athletic” clothes, the mother has retained a civil rights attorney.

Grant and her spokesperson, Michelle Watts, told TMZ that the apology was not sufficient given the longstanding practices of discrimination at other restaraunt’s owned by Atlas Restaraunt Group.

Restaurant Group Apologizes and Changes Policy After Black Woman and Her Son Were Denied Service

Atlas Restaurant Group has issued an apology after one of their Baltimore restaurants denied service to a Black woman and her 9-year-old son because of how he was dressed.

On Monday, a video posted on social media showed the woman, Marcia Grant, being turned away at Ouzo Bay in Baltimore’s Harbor East after an unidentified manager tells Grant that her son’s outfit violates the restaurant’s dress code, despite a white boy at the restaurant wearing a similar outfit to her son.

Nonreligious LGBTQ People Face Discrimination, Stigma

A new report from American Atheists titled Reality Check: Being Nonreligious in America reveals high levels of discrimination and stigma for nonreligious people in general and notes that those who are LGBTQ have a disproportionate lack of family support.

“LGBTQ young people face significant family rejection that results in a greater rate of negative psychological outcomes,” states the report, released Monday and based on the U.S. Secular Survey. “Similarly, nonreligious LGBTQ survey participants were more likely to have unsupportive parents. Among families that are aware of the participant’s nonreligious identity, LGBTQ participants were significantly more likely to have had 'very' or 'somewhat' unsupportive parents (43.0%) compared to non-LGBTQ participants (34.9%).”

These numbers are cause for concern, the report notes, because “participants with unsupportive parents had a 71.2% higher rate of likely depression than those with very supportive parents.”

It doesn’t get any better for nonreligious LGBTQ people outside the home, either, with 22 percent of those surveyed reporting negative experiences at work.

Poland may start sending teachers to jail for turning kids gay

Poland is considering a bill that would throw teachers in jail for teaching sex education. The bill links pedophilia and homosexuality.

The Parliament of Poland is set to vote on the “Stop Pedophilia bill” today. It does not address sex with minors, but instead focuses on sex education in schools.

Poland doesn’t currently have a required sex education curriculum for public schools, but the current law would go much further than simply not having a curriculum and impose a penalty of up to three years in prison for teachers who provide sex education to children.

The bill’s explanation of why sex education is bad brings up homosexuality multiple times, including a statement that says sex ed teachers “groom and familiarize children with homosexuality.”

Renters Are Being Forced From Their Homes Despite Eviction Moratoriums Meant to Protect Them

Millions of people in America are under shelter-in-place orders requiring them to stay home whenever possible, but a growing number don’t have that luxury. Their landlords are kicking them out for not paying the rent, despite moratoriums on evictions in more than 30 states and dozens of cities.

Some landlords change the locks when tenants are out. Others cut off power or utilities, or let themselves into tenants’ apartments and throw their stuff onto the street. Landlords also take the doors off the hinges if tenants won’t leave, says George Donnelly, an attorney at The Public Interest Law Center in Philadelphia. In most cases, experts say, the evictions are illegal, since landlords are required to go through the courts to evict tenants, and most courts are not currently processing eviction orders. In addition, sheriffs or marshals, not landlords, are supposed to enforce eviction orders, including supervising removal companies to carry away a tenant’s belongings if the renter refuses to leave.

Doctors Come Under Attack in India as Coronavirus Stigma Grows

Katdare’s experience is one of the more dramatic in a phenomenon that has become common in India lately: health-care workers being subjected to violence and abuse as they try to contain the virus. Assaults have been reported across the country as people panic about catching the disease from medical workers or being stigmatized for having contracted it themselves.

Charity compares homosexuality to drug addiction to justify rejecting LGBTQ coronavirus volunteers

An organization has been refusing to allow LGBTQ people – including medical professionals – to volunteer at its New York City tent hospital set up to help people afflicted with coronavirus.

The group’s president is defending the policy by comparing homosexuality to alcoholism, drug addiction, and people who volunteer just “to pick up girls.”

“God instituted monogamous marriage between male and female as the foundation of the family and the basic structure of human society,” the statement says. “For this reason, we believe that marriage is exclusively the union of one genetic male and one genetic female.”

At least one person who tried to volunteer without signing the Statement of Faith was turned away, with a staffer at the organization saying it “is a Christian organization.”

Parents Say School Expelled Elementary Students After Raising Coronavirus Concerns

As the second full week of school closures comes to an end, many Bay Area parents are anxiously waiting to hear that it’s safe for their kids to return to class. But for a group of parents in the South Bay, their kids still won’t be allowed back on campus when classrooms reopen after administrators decided to withdraw their children from school in a move that left parents stunned.

The school’s decision comes after a series of critical Facebook comments from parents questioning the school’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I was devastated,” a parent told NBC Bay Area when she learned her child is no longer enrolled. “I feel the school is just retaliating against us.”

Gay Guys With Small Penises Share Their Hookup Horror Stories

“Are you hung/XL”?

If you’re a queer guy, chances are that question has shaped a good chunk of your Grindr experience. Sure, it’s a casually posed enquiry. But the question reinforces the stigma surrounding penis size – particularly in male-male hook-up culture – that drives many men to feel ashamed, embarrassed or undesirable.

When it comes to penis size in male-male hook up culture, individuals can end up afraid of dating, put off sexual activity and in some cases abstain from sex altogether to remove themselves from the risk of being shamed, or feeling shamed. Yet, penis size-shaming continues to be broadly presented as a joke in popular culture, as this recent Guardian article surmised so well.

So in the interest of smashing the stigma and humanising the situation, here are four men with smaller penises who have told VICE the reality of their experience, and how it feels to be discriminated against.

“I asked if everything was OK, and my hookup said: ‘Only men with big cocks can fuck me’”
