'Mistress Day' Is The Most Infamous Day...

If you have plans for Valentine's Day, you might want to double-check your dinner reservation. Is your table for two on February 13 instead of February 14? You could find yourself out on what is known in the restaurant industry as "Mistress Day." Also called "Mistress Night" or "Paramour Night," it apparently occurs on the day before Valentine's Day. Yes, that couple seated next to you at Carbone or Olive Garden on February 13 might just not be all that they seem.

A server I interviewed remembered seeing serial cheaters taking multiple partners out during the week of Valentine's Day—all at the same restaurant. "I definitely knew him at the time, so he was semi regular and a SERIAL Valentine's offender," said the server, who worked at a popular steakhouse chain in Canada where fellow servers called February 13 "Mistresses Valentine's."

Man accosts Asians In-N-Out Burger and asks one of them if he's having GAY SEX with Kim Jong-un

The unidentified man responded by threatening to spit in their faces.

The two friends tried to move on and mind their business, but the man reappeared later, calling himself a 'slave master' and describing Elliot as 'Filipino s***' before challenging him to step outside.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot: I'm only granting one-on-one interviews to journalists of color

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Wednesday that she will grant one-on-one interviews to mark the two-year anniversary of her inauguration solely to journalists of color, saying she has been struck by the “overwhelmingly” white press corps in Chicago.

“I ran to break up the status quo that was failing so many,” Lightfoot, who is Black, tweeted, also issuing a detailed letter to City Hall reporters on her decision. “That isn’t just in City Hall. It’s a shame that in 2021, the City Hall press corps is overwhelmingly White in a city where more than half of the city identifies as Black, Latino, AAPI or Native American.”

While the move isn’t unprecedented in recent years, it drew fierce scrutiny among the city’s press corps and beyond with members of the media quickly taking Lightfoot to task for her decision.

I’m a Straight Woman Who Married a Gay Man

I met my husband 13 years ago, and we’ve been together ever since. We fell deeply, madly in love with each other and have been married for nine wonderful years now. He’s patient, kind, gentle-hearted. He’s also always been honest about being gay and has never hidden it from me. Only one of our mutual friends knows this about my husband. Our son also knows, since we thought it would be best to remain open with him about it, so he never “found out” by surprise or from our mutual friend. Our son took the news very well and doesn’t care that his father was gay.

I’ve never told my family, or really any of my friends, as I think they’d all be judgmental. My siblings don’t like my husband, but that’s a different letter in itself. So I’ve always kept it bottled up inside. He’s been married before, and divorced, to a straight woman, with whom he has a grown daughter. I’m a straight woman too. I’ve asked my husband about it, and he confirms that he’s gay, not bisexual. He left his first wife because of a lot of problems (and her infidelity), then he was in a few different relationships with other men, before he met his ex-boyfriend. They were still living together when we met. I’m confused by it all, and it has, at times, caused problems in our marriage, because of my lack of self-confidence. I have doubts that he might leave me someday for a gay relationship like he did his ex-wife. We’ve both been faithful to each other, and he loves me, and I love him. But is that good enough for him? Would you consider him bisexual or gay?

Sorry, I'm Not Going to Congratulate You On Your Engagement

Let it be known that I am thrilled for all of the newly-engaged. In most cases, I know (and like!) my friends' new fiancés, I've been expecting the news, and I'm pumped to party at their wedding. But I absolutely hate wishing people congratulations on their engagement, and I won't do it anymore.

By definition, "congratulations" means an expression of praise for an achievement. Congrats on your new job! Congrats on buying that house! Congrats on watching the entire backlog of Gilmore Girls in one weekend so that you can be culturally relevant this fall! Congratulations, to me, implies that you've achieved something others haven't, something you've worked hard for and earned.

Engagements aren't an achievement. Engagements are a grown-up decision made between two people who have discussed their relationship and decided that, hey, they're clearly better together than not, so why not make it official? That's a wonderful moment that deserves celebrating, but calling it an achievement implies that you've succeeded at something (i.e. landing a husband) you otherwise may not have had the drive to go forth and accomplish. Then not being engaged must mean you haven't achieved something, and, for the sake of this argument, that you're the marital equivalent of someone sleeping in their parents' basement at 30. It implies failure on the part of the un-engaged, and that's uncool.

Allegations Of Abuse Within The Convent Walls

Religious orders are supposed to provide spiritual guidance to those who join. But some of the women who entered Sisters Minor of Mary Immaculate (SMMI) say they faced physical and emotional abuse.

Patricia Budd, one of the former nuns of SMMI, first entered in 1995 in hopes of connecting with her Catholicism. It was at her first retreat where she met the order’s U.S. delegate, Sister Theresa Kovacs.

“It was a lot of hugs. There was a lot of encouragement,” Budd told HuffPost. “They would listen to you, and you felt really important, and you felt like you’re valued.” But soon after she joined, Budd and the other nuns realized things were not as they seemed.

“I witnessed other girls just being yelled at on a constant basis by Theresa Kovacs,” said Rose, who joined SMMI in 1995. (Three interviewees asked to only be identified by their first names.) According to Rose, a sister named Georgiana often got the brunt of Kovacs’ anger.

“It would be a torrent of the nastiest stuff you could ever say to a human being, she would say to me,” said Georgiana. “It was meant to keep people in line.”

The nuns faced strict rules. They weren’t allowed to speak to each other. They weren’t allowed to go for walks outside the convent doors.

“Basically your food is pretty much less and less,” she said. “And so, that’s pretty much like what a cult is — and break you down. That’s the whole thing. Always to break you down.”

Men Find Bromances 'Emotionally Rival' Romantic Relationships, Study Reveals

Men find that platonic friendships with other men 'emotionally rival' their romantic relationships with women, according to a study in Men and Masculinities.

Those surveyed said 'the lack of boundaries and judgment' in their friendships with other men resulted in 'elevated emotional stability, enhanced emotional disclosure, social fulfilment, and better conflict resolution, compared to the emotional lives they shared with girlfriends'.

Most of the participants answers to the survey also made reference to the fact they felt more like they could be their real self with their bros.

As one respondent said: "Tim knows I love listening to Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, but I keep that quiet [around my girlfriend] because she would judge me. I feel like I have to be more manly around her."

Nurses in Orange County protest staffing conditions at local hospitals

The support for nurses demonstrating outside South Coast Global Medical Center is clear. It was one of four protests at Orange County hospitals.
Nurses say that their safety and patient lives are at risk after the state allowed their hospital, part of KPC Health, to increase the patient to nurse ratio in the middle of a pandemic.

"So instead of giving us more nurses we got more work. Patients are going to die, nurses are gonna break, nurses are exhausted," says Karen Rodriguez, a registered nurse.

Nurses say that they are overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients, shifts go as long as 16 hours, four to five days a week, code after code, leaving them exhausted, waking up anxious in the middle of the night.

"It might be surge after surge and who knows, and they're not preparing for the worst," says Irene Brown, South Coast Global Medical Center ICU nurse

"I don't have any more to give when I get home, and that's really unfair to my family and myself because I just want to rest," says Vanessa Aguilar

She says it's also unfair to patients. Aguilar had this heartbreaking admission: Some may have made it if we had more resources.

Fort Lauderdale ranked least safe city in America

The Sunshine State is a bit dimmer this morning.

Fort Lauderdale, one of Florida’s biggest cities, has been declared the most unsafe in America according to a new survey from WalletHub.

The credit and consumer reports website said the preponderance of negative weather events plus rising COVID-19 cases were responsible for the city’s poor ranking, the local Sun Sentinel reported.

“Aside from the types of hazards that can cause bodily injury or other physical harm, taking out an unaffordable second mortgage, forgoing health insurance or even visiting unsecured websites are also ways people run into danger,” said WalletHub. “Some cities are simply better at protecting their residents from harm.”

Jeff Bezos: Blue Origin space company will take first woman to the moon

Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin will take the first woman to the moon, the billionaire said as Nasa nears a decision over who will supply its first privately built lunar landers, meant to be capable of sending astronauts to the moon by 2024.

“This is the engine that will take the first woman to the surface of the moon,” Bezos said in a post on Instagram with a video of a BE-7 engine test this week at Nasa Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Twelve men have walked on the Moon, but no women. Nasa aims to change that, administrator Jim Bridenstine saying last year the first woman to complete a lunar landing will be drawn from the current astronaut corps.

“In the 1960s, young ladies didn’t have the opportunity to see themselves in that role,” Bridenstine said. “Today they do, and I think this is a very exciting opportunity.”

Woman Clashes With Her Husband After They Agree To Take In Her Deceased Best Friend's Children

My best friend passed away unexpectedly nine months ago. It was not something that I ever thought would happen.

"She left behind 3 children, 8[Male], 4[Female] and 1[Female]. My husband and I were written to be her children's godparents."

We have never wanted children of our own and do not have any, but we accepted the role of being godparents because we figured that it's just a formality. Plus my best friend did not have many other people she could rely on."

"I want the children. My husband does not. He said he's willing to take care of them on weekends or something but not be their permanent guardian."

"He said keeping the children would violate a pretty big part of our marriage, considering he has never wanted children and has even got a vasectomy to prevent them."

THE LGBTQ MOVEMENT FALTERED

LGBTQ acceptance is eroding even among young people. What are we going to do about it?

There is some very bad news that not nearly enough people are talking about. Acceptance of the LGBTQ community is significantly declining in the United States and has been for several years now. Almost two years ago, a national annual survey by GLAAD found that, since 2016, Americans have become much more uncomfortable with LGBTQ folks. Though the report has since become slightly dated, little research has been done on the issue since. Other statistics, such as consistent increases in anti-LGBTQ hate crimes, suggest that the problem has not abated and may even be getting worse.

Despite the seriousness of this issue, there appears to be little awareness within the LGBTQ community that its public support is eroding. This ignorance within the wider community is mirrored by a lack of serious analysis by queer leaders and researchers. That needs to change.

And let’s not fool ourselves that this is a US-only problem. While it’s unclear how much this backlash is mirrored in Canada and Western Europe (which share similar historical trajectories on LGBTQ rights), both of these regions have also seen notable increases in anti-LGBTQ hate crimes – so there is good reason to be pessimistic. However, only real research focused on social attitudes will give us clarity. For whatever reason, this research isn’t being done in earnest.

Study Shows People Prefer Robot Over Their Boss: 6 Ways To Be A Leader People Prefer

These are stressful times—among the most stressful in history—and people need help. Often, they turn to their employers and specifically their leaders. But they don’t always get what they need. A new global study reports people actually prefer robots to humans for help with mental health issues. So what’s going on, and how can leaders be more empathetic, supportive and preferable to robots?

It’s important to know the issues plaguing employees are significant. In a just-released global study involving more than 12,000 people across 11 countries by Oracle and Workplace Intelligence, 78% of people reported their mental health had been negatively affected during the pandemic. In addition, people said stress, anxiety and depression were reducing their productivity (42%) and increasing poor decision making (40%).

And interestingly, 68% say when they have stress or anxiety at work, if given a choice between a robot or their boss, they would rather talk to a robot than their own manager. While the results may not indicate our future managers will all be robots, they do illustrate important ways leaders can improve and support their employees.

Masturbating Can Help You Cope With Anxiety — Seriously

Rita M., a 20-year-old social work student living in Seattle, Washington, used to masturbate three to five times a week. But as with everything else, during a global pandemic, self-pleasure has been hard to come by. She's not alone in finding it more difficult to engage in this form of self-care. And yet, the benefits of masturbation may actually come in more handy than ever. Tending to ourselves is one step in navigating a new normal.

“It has been more difficult to be ‘in the mood’ because, in my head, I ask myself, ‘Why is masturbation something I’m thinking about when there’s a pandemic happening in my backyard?’’ Rita tells InStyle. Witnessing enormous struggles and injustices by vulnerable populations dominates my mind. Masturbation gets brushed aside and distress consumes me.”

There's no doubt that coronavirus and it’s ripple-out effects — the obvious fear and worry, the restricted human interaction — have had negative impacts on people’s mental health. Back in March, 45% of Americans reported the virus had taken a toll on their emotional wellbeing, and according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll, the number of people who are experiencing anxiety and depression has spiked as a result of the pandemic.
