I’m gay, not “queer” and Pride has gone too far

I personally started to see the switch in 2016 when I was informed I didn’t deserve a seat at the Pride table for fighting back against the Toronto Pride parade’s efforts to deny the shooter in the Orlando nightclub mass killing was a self-loathing Muslim extremist. (Funny how things come full circle.)

But that was just the start.

Desperate to find a cause to replace the fight for gay rights, the radical activists turned to gender identity and trans rights.

Suddenly all those who fancied themselves woke started using preferred pronouns in their correspondence. It was absurd.

As a Gay Man, I’ll Never Be Normal

I have pride. I no longer crave the comforts of normalcy because so much joy and insight has come on the other side of fear and being an outlier, even an outcast. I have divorced my comforts from those of people around me. I know now that our culture’s fringe is also its framework. That is the power of queerness. Normalization is, frankly, anti-queer. No amount of respectability politics can change that. Being normal is a lie people tell themselves to cover up the reality that they are merely common.

On Friday, the Detroit rapper hit up Instagram to share a video of himself aboard an airplane with his 3-year-old son. The clip showed the artist kissing and licking the child’s neck, prompting the boy to pull away from his dad as he let out a chuckle. The video immediately went viral and ignited a wave of criticism as well as accusations of child abuse. Some social media users described Dugg’s actions as “sick” and “inappropriate,” while others threatened to call Child Protective Services on the “Maybach” artist.
