How Do We Tell Our Friends to Leave Their Jerky Kid at Home?

Dear Care and Feeding,

My husband and I are friends with a lovely couple. We have many things in common and enjoy hanging out with them. The problem is their kid. They have a son the same age as our younger son and the boys like hanging out with each other. At first that seemed like a great bonus to this friendship. But the longer we’ve been friends, the clearer it has become that their kid is a horrible person—rude, spoiled, insolent, a liar, and frequently downright mean to our kid (although our kid doesn’t seem to care and still wants to hang out with him). The parents do nothing to address his bad behavior. In fact, they coddle him. I know we need to mind our own business and not make comments on their objectively garbage parenting style, but can we distance our kid from theirs? Is it too weird to hang out with the parents and just never bring our own kid along? As a side note, we could leave our son with his older brother; they don’t have any other kids so we don’t really have an “adults only” option.

NJ woman attacked in Staples after telling customer to mask up or back off

A New Jersey Staples shopper with her nose poking out of her mask pushed another woman to the ground, breaking her leg, after being told to keep her uncovered schnoz six feet away.

The social-distancing encounter unfolded just after 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday at a Hackensack location, where the unknown assailant improperly wearing a mask walked up a 54-year-old woman using a copy machine, police said.

Beaches reach capacity, coronavirus testing sites are shut down for safety and millions of Americans are told to stay inside as a scorching heat wave sweeps the US - and forecasters warn dozens of cities will hit 100F tomorrow

Scores of Americans flocked to beaches on Sunday as a heat wave caused COVID-19 testing sites to close Washington D.C., left New Yorkers to face air quality advisories and at least 10 states recorded heat index temperatures in the triple digits.

A heat wave that hit the United States on Friday and continued into the weekend prompted dozens of quarantine-fatigued citizens to catch some sun - despite several excessive heat and regular heat advisories in place.

The National Weather Service listed dozens of areas under the heat advisories and advised more than 100 million to stay indoors.

In fact, 14 states had feel like temperatures that surpassed 100F, as other places recorded well into the upper 90s.

7-Eleven Day is canceled this year, meaning no free Slurpees

It's a sad day for Slurpee lovers everywhere.

The convenience retailer has celebrated July 11 (7/11) every summer since 2002 as 7-Eleven Day, with free Slurpees for all who visited one of the stores. But it's been canceled this year. And, yes, you can blame it on the pandemic.

Instead, 7-Eleven said it would celebrate its birthday by donating one million meals to Feeding America, a national nonprofit.

Texas Pastor Apologizes For Allowing Hugging At Church After Dozens Contract COVID-1

A Texas pastor has apologized for failing to keep people socially distanced at his evangelical church, after he and dozens of congregants reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

Calvary Chapel of San Antonio has held multiple indoor, in-person services since it reopened in early May, right after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) let the state’s stay-at-home order expire. As hospitalizations and positivity rates surged in Texas over the past few weeks, members of the church began testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

The church has at least 50 cases of the novel coronavirus, lead pastor Ron Arbaugh told ?NBC-affiliate WOAI-TV on Saturday. Most of the positive cases are staff members ? including Arbaugh, his wife, at least one other main pastor, and children’s ministry staff. The majority of impacted individuals have reported mild symptoms, the pastor said.

High-Risk Florida Teen Dies of Coronavirus After Going to 100-Person Church Party

The Fort Myers, Florida community mourned after a local teen died of complications from the new coronavirus, COVID-19, at the end of June. Carsyn Leigh Davis, 17, had already battled several illnesses in her short life, including cancer and an autoimmune disorder, but it was COVID-19 that led to her death on June 23.

But a newly-released report from the medical examiner, shows a different side of her death. According to the report, Davis contracted COVID-19 after attending a 100-person party at First Youth Church, where attendees were not required to social distance, and she did not wear a mask.

And after Davis developed COVID-19 symptoms, her parents treated her at home, waiting nearly a week before taking her to a hospital. Her mother, a nurse, and a man identified as her father in the report, a physician assistant, gave Davis azithromycin and hydroxychloroquine, the malaria drug touted by President Donald Trump as a COVID-19 treatment despite warnings from the Food and Drug Administration that it caused virus patients to die more rapidly.

Couple Married for 53 Years Hold Hands as They Die of Coronavirus on the Same Day

A couple who were married for more than half a century reportedly succumbed to coronavirus complications on the same day in Texas.

According to CNN, Betty and Curtis Tarpley, 80 and 79, died within an hour of each other on June 18 and held hands during their final minutes together.

The couple's son, Tim Tarpley, told the network that Betty showed symptoms of the deadly disease just before she was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth on June 9. Curtis was admitted to the same hospital just two days later.

Tarpley said Betty phoned both him and his sister, telling them she was at peace with dying as her condition continued to decline.

"I just screamed, 'No!' I was like, 'I've got too much, too many other things to do in this life that I want to show you, and I'm not ready,'" he recalled to CNN.

Why People Are Still Cruising for Sex During the Pandemic

Alan stopped cruising for sex at public parks in Southern California for a month after the COVID-19 lockdowns began on March 19th, but has since been twice. As social distancing recommendations continue, he believes it’s naïve to think that guys will just stop having sex in parks altogether. “We have animal instincts, and we have a right to indulge in our desires,” Alan, whose name has been changed for privacy reasons, explained to VICE through Squirt, a website known for its cruising listings. "Sex is the main reason why I live life right now. If I didn’t have this outlet, I don’t think I’d be around much longer,” he continued.

CDC tracks cluster of coronavirus cases in rural Arkansas to church, raising alarm on religious gatherings

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tracked a cluster of coronavirus cases in rural Arkansas back to a church pastor and his wife, indicating that faith-based organizations and events could be sources of Covid-19 transmission, according to a new study published Tuesday.

“This outbreak highlights the potential for widespread transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, both at group gatherings during church events and within the broader community,” the researchers wrote. “Faith-based organizations that are operating or planning to resume in-person operations, including regular services, funerals, or other events, should be aware of the potential for high rates of transmission of SARS-CoV-2.”

Black people in UK four times more likely to die of COVID-19: ONS

Black people in the United Kingdom are more than four times as likely to die from coronavirus than white people, the UK's statistics office said on Thursday.

Those of Bangladeshi and Pakistani ethnicity also have a significantly higher chance of dying from COVID-19 than white people, even when adjusting for deprivation, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

An Ohio woman was placed under arrest after reportedly calling 911 to ask for help extinguishing a fire in her crotch.

Katrina Morgan, 50, called the cops in Port Clinton at about 10 p.m. Saturday, to allegedly falsely report her “pussy” ablaze, the Port Clinton News-Herald reported.

NYC police union warns the 'city will fall apart' if cops are made to enforce social distancing

A New York City police union has had enough of the coronavirus social distancing enforcement, and warned city leaders that continued efforts to enforce social distancing could cause the city to "fall apart."

The statement from Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch issued Monday accused Mayor Bill de Blasio of putting officers in a bad position with policies that are unreasonable to enforce.

"The situation is untenable: the NYPD needs to get cops out of the social distancing enforcement business altogether," the statement read. "The cowards who run this city have given us nothing but vague guidelines and mixed messages, leaving the cops on the street corners to fend for ourselves. Nobody has a right to interfere with a police action. But now that the inevitable backlash has arrived, they are once again throwing us under the bus."

Futuristic 'Micrashell' Suit Aims to Make Concerts Safe During a Pandemic

Thanks to COVID-19, and—more specifically—a delayed mitigation push here in the U.S., the live concert element of the music industry has remained on an effective pause. While many artists and managers were previously holding out hope that postponed dates could be pushed into late 2020, an increasing number of tours originally slated for this year are being canceled outright or being retooled with 2021 in mind.

The multidisciplinary design team at Production.Club out of Los Angeles, meanwhile, has taken up the task of imagining what a protective concert suit might look like.

Parents 'Cannot Cope with This Insanity' While Homeschooling Kids During Pandemic

It’s been nearly two months since schools in the United States closed their doors and sent students home to carry on their lessons through a screen.

Due to the coronavirus, American pupils from kindergarten to senior year were forced to swap blackboards for Zoom — much to the dismay of the parents now forced to step in as surrogate teachers.

A viral tweet from archeologist and University of Alabama at Birmingham professor Sarah Parcak summed up many frustrated parents’ emotions after she said homeschooling after completing other household chores was a “fucking joke” that made her “want to barf.”

“We just wrote a hard email. I told our son’s (lovely, kind, caring) teacher that, no, we will not be participating in her 'virtual classroom,' and that he was done with the 1st grade,” she wrote on April 8. “We cannot cope with this insanity. Survival and protecting his well being come first.”
