Of Course Hobby Lobby Thinks It’s Above the Law

Hobby Lobby, the national chain of craft stores, has been performing a kind of solo act of defiance of law by refusing to close stores around the country because its owners would like to stay open during a pandemic. This follows three weeks of insistence that it wouldn’t close, a summary firing (by email) of staff, and then a grand reopening in select states in violation of shelter-in-place orders. Is any part of you somehow surprised that Hobby Lobby believes itself to be above the law?

After all, just a few years ago no lesser an institution than the U.S. Supreme Court announced that the company could simply ignore federal law when it wanted to deny contraceptive care to its employees. Having been blessed with the right to skirt the law as it sees fit, regardless of the harms it rains down on everyone else, Hobby Lobby strides into this pandemic self-certain, anti-science, and at war with the country—just as Samuel Alito invited it to be.

‘Shoot them dead,’ Philippine’s Duterte warns coronavirus lockdown violators

In a televised address, Duterte said it was vital everyone cooperates and follows home quarantine measures, as authorities try to slow the coronavirus contagion and spare the country's fragile health system from being overwhelmed.

The Philippines has recorded 96 coronavirus deaths and 2,311 confirmed cases, all but three in the past three weeks, with infections now being reported in the hundreds every day.

"It is getting worse. So once again I'm telling you the seriousness of the problem and that you must listen," Duterte said late on Wednesday.

"My orders to the police and military ... if there is trouble and there's an occasion that they fight back and your lives are in danger, shoot them dead."

"Is that understood? Dead. Instead of causing trouble, I will bury you."

Hate crimes against perceived coronavirus carriers spike in NYC

The city has coronavirus hate-crime fever, NYPD data shows.

Crime stats released Thursday show a spike in attacks against perceived carriers of the COVID-19 bug.

The data shows there have been 23 hate crimes against victim’s whose protected category is classified as “other” so far this year — a 475-percent increase from the 4 reported over the same period last year.

The crimes are categorized that way even though a majority of victims are Asian, officials said.

“Recent Coronavirus-related incidents fall under the anti-other category as there are two motivating factors behind these crimes,” the accompanying statement said. “The victim’s race (anti-Asian) and the perception that they have the Coronavirus (anti-disability).”

Worshippers Pack Louisiana Church Where Pastor is Defying Coronavirus Ban: ‘We Have a Mandate from God’ — WATCH

Life Tabernacle Church was packed for services on Tuesday night after its pastor, Mark Anthony (Tony) Spell, was charged with six misdemeanor counts of disobeying the powers of the governor for defying the state’s ban on public gatherings amid the coronavirus crisis.

“We have a mandate from the word of God. … We have a mandate from God to praise God in his sanctuary. This is the sanctuary,” said Spell.

Porch piracy: Here's what we learned after watching hours of YouTube videos showing packages being pilfered from homes

Deliveries of groceries and packages are soaring as physical retailers close their doors and tens of millions of Americans “shelter in place.” Moreover, the need for social distancing may encourage more delivery workers to leave packages unattended on porches rather than risk an interaction with someone who has the coronavirus.

These conditions may be perfect for thieves, who prior to the pandemic were increasingly pilfering packages from homes across the country.

About 11 million homeowners reported having a package stolen in 2017 – and a separate 2018 survey found that almost a fifth of Americans said they had been a victim. Three-quarters of the 2017 thefts occurred during the day, and the average cost of the stolen items was close to US$200.

I led a recent study of “porch piracy” to better understand how it happens. I enlisted the help of two graduate students, Melody Hicks and Zachary Hutchinson, to help me review the videos, and my wife Amy Stickle, a math lecturer, performed a statistical analysis to ensure accuracy of the data collected.

MAN CHARGED AFTER ALLEGEDLY COUGHING ON PACKETS OF NOODLES REFUSED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS PURCHASE LIMITS

Police in Australia have charged a man accused of intentionally coughing on packets of noodles after being told by staff there was a limit on how many he could buy.

The suspect, a 34-year-old man from the suburb of Kooringal, tried to ignore the restrictions put in place as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak by purchasing four packets of noodles, police said. The incident took place at a Woolworths in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, last Thursday.

After being approached by staff, the man allegedly coughed on the two packets he was refused and said "well they're now contaminated anyway," 9News reported.

His attempted rule-breaking noodle purchase was initially flagged by a self-serve register, Riverina Police District's Acting Detective Inspector, Steve Probst, told the news outlet.

Church that thinks homosexuality is ‘destructive’ stays open during coronavirus because it’s a ‘divine institution’

The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland has announced that it is “not of the view” that services need to stop to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

This statement was issued two days ago, in the wake of UK prime minister Boris Johnson’s March 16 briefing that said everyone must avoid both “mass gatherings” and “pubs, clubs, theatres and other such social venues”.

The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland said: “Although many have interpreted UK government advice and remarks [about coronavirus] as meaning that all services in church buildings should cease, and have stopped meeting, the Church Interests Committee is not of that view.”

Yes, really.

IS IT SAFE TO GET MY MAIL DURING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC?

The virus, SARS-CoV-2, is known to primarily spread through respiratory droplets, so reducing close contact between people is a way to reduce the chances of being exposed. It's also possible that people could touch an infected object, transfer the virus to their hand and then touch their face and become infected.

However, it's unclear how long the virus can live on surfaces. Studies show it could remain on a surface for a few hours or several days, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This time frame could also vary based on the type of surface and the temperature or humidity of the environment that it's in.

Beachside towns in the Hamptons start filling up months before summer with rental properties now scarce as New Yorkers flee the city amid the coronavirus pandemic

Beaches in the Hamptons are starting to fill up earlier than normal and rental properties are now scarce with New Yorkers fleeing the city as the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread.

The beachside communities in Long Island have seen a surge in population ever since New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a stay-at-home order to help stop the spread of the virus.

The unusual surge so early in the year has prompted local leaders in the Hamptons to urge Gov Cuomo to ban non-locals from the area during the outbreak.

Locals in the Hamptons, which is usually a summer hotspot for New Yorkers getting out of the city, have reported larger than normal crowds at beaches and busier beachside parking lots.

A group of young adults (covidiots) held a coronavirus party in Kentucky to defy orders to socially distance. Now one of them has coronavirus

At least one person in Kentucky is infected after taking part at a "coronavirus party" with a group of young adults, Gov. Andy Beshear said Tuesday.

The partygoers intentionally got together "thinking they were invincible" and purposely defying state guidance to practice social distancing, Bashear said.
"This is one that makes me mad," the governor said. "We have to be much better than that."

While Covid-19 has been more deadly and severe for people older than 60 and those with underlying health issues in data from China, health officials and leaders around the country have been imploring millennials and other young people to practice social distancing, because even people who are infected but without symptoms can transmit it to other people.

In fact, recent modeling based on Chinese data shows that asymptomatic carriers of the virus may have been responsible for its initial rapid spread there.
