Why are we catching more diseases from animals?

The world is grappling with the new coronavirus, which has spread from China to at least 15 other countries.

Outbreaks of new infectious diseases are typically seen as a "one off".

But the new virus - thought to have stemmed from wildlife - highlights our risk from animal-borne disease. This is likely to be more of a problem in future as climate change and globalisation alter the way animals and humans interact.

How can animals make people ill?
In the past 50 years, a host of infectious diseases have spread rapidly after making the evolutionary jump from animals to humans.

The HIV/Aids crisis of the 1980s originated from great apes, the 2004-07 avian flu pandemic came from birds, and pigs gave us the swine flu pandemic in 2009. More recently, it was discovered severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) came from bats, via civets, while bats also gave us Ebola.

Humans have always caught diseases from animals. In fact, most new infectious diseases come from wildlife.

Man Praised for Telling Grieving Parents They 'Made' Him Get Vasectomy

For a while, life was good. He got married, had a couple of dogs and lived in a modest house. But the sudden death of his brother on his honeymoon left his parents "devastated" for more reasons than one.

"My mom said that when we had kids I should name one after my brother," the man said. "I wasn't really thinking straight so I told the unvarnished truth. I had to choose between kids and paying off my student loans."

If Palm Springs isn't going to ban short-term rentals, it needs more limits

While desert cities like Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City, La Quinta and Palm Desert have chosen to limit or ban STRs, Palm Springs' approach is the opposite: We essentially rubber stamp new vacation rental permit applications without any regard to how overly saturated our neighborhoods are with these mini-motels.

The result is we're now up to 2,254 short term rentals in Palm Springs, an increase of 26% over the past three years, according to a Palm Springs Post report. But citywide numbers don't tell the story, because some neighborhoods are more impacted than others.

Japanese mayor says men should grocery shop during pandemic as women 'take a longer time'

The mayor of Japan's third-largest city is facing a public backlash after he suggested men are better suited to grocery shopping during the coronavirus pandemic, because women take too long and contribute to overcrowding at supermarkets.

The number of confirmed cases of the virus in Japan has spiked in recent weeks -- dashing hopes that the government's initial virus response had succeeded in controlling its spread. As of Thursday, Japan had 11,950 confirmed cases, including 299 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University. On March 1, the country had 243 cases.

That spike has seen a raft of new restrictions put in place nationwide. On Thursday, Osaka mayor Ichiro Matsui implied male grocery shoppers would reduce the potential spread of the virus as they would spend less time in stores.

"Women take a longer time grocery shopping because they browse through different products and weigh out which option is best," Matsui told reporters at a coronavirus press conference in Osaka on Thursday.

Teenager goes ‘mental’ on mom over birthday present:

The Redditor started his story by explaining that he loves baking, a passion that led him to ask for a stand mixer for his birthday. He ultimately got the appliance — a white model that cost around £80 ($100) — from his uncle and immediately began using it often.

Months later, the teen went to make croissants with his mixer only to find the device was missing.

“I looked everywhere for it and couldn’t find it,” he wrote. “I asked my mom where it was and she said she gave it away to charity. I WENT MENTAL.”

The 15-year-old wrote that he then confronted his mom with “a few hateful words.” His mother said that the mixer didn’t match the color scheme in the house and, as part of her kitchen, was hers to do what she wanted with.
