LA Mayor Eric Garcetti signs order criminalizing homelessness, with violators facing possible fines of up to $1,000

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti recently signed into law an ordinance that criminalizes homelessness in most parts of the city, a motion that has drawn just as much fierce support by some as it has opposition by others.

The law specifies certain times and locations where it will be 'unlawful for a person to sit, lie, or sleep, or to store, use, maintain, or place personal property in the public right-of-way'.

What Quitters Understand About the Job Market

More Americans are telling their boss to shove it. Is the workplace undergoing a revolution—or just a post-pandemic spasm?

Quitting your job is hot this summer. More Americans quit in May than any other month on record going back to the beginning of the century, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For every 100 workers in hotels, restaurants, bars, and retailers, about five of them quit last month.

Low-wage workers aren’t the only ones eyeing the door. In May, more than 700,000 workers in the bureau’s mostly white-collar category of “professional and business services” left their job—the highest monthly number ever. Across all sectors and occupations, four in 10 employees now say they’ve considered peacing out of their current place of work.

Up and down the income ladder, workers have new reasons to tell their boss to shove it.

Almost 100 Customers Are Sick After Eating at This Popular Fast-Food Chain

Since our first report on Feb. 28 about 40 cases of foodborne illness linked to an Arby's location in Springfield, Ill., dozens of more customers have fallen ill, forcing the fast-food restaurant to close for the second time in less than a month.

According to Food Safety News, almost 100 cases of illness have now been reported from the specific Arby's location, and while the source of the contamination is still unknown, health officials have stated the pathogen in question is norovirus. The virus is highly contagious and spreads easily, making it difficult to eradicate.

‘I felt like I was being experimented on’: 1 in 4 teachers are considering quitting after this past year

The Facebook group “Teaching During COVID-19” has over 134,500 members. The page was created on March 14th, 2020 “to serve as a resource for teachers to share lesson ideas, student connection ideas and to support each other as we face something in education we’ve never experienced before.”

One of those members is Henry Rivera Leal, 32. Rivera Leal began teaching English at Chalmette High School in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana in August 2015. He says he loves teaching and prides himself on trying to be “a positive male role model of color” for students. “I wanted to help. I wanted to be a part of the solution,” he says.

In Sept. 2020, he resigned.

4 million Americans quit their jobs in April — a 20-year record.

Job vacancies rose to a 20-year high in April, the Labor Department said on Tuesday.

The department also said 4 million workers had quit their jobs in April, another 20-year record. Job quits rose the most in the retail sector and in professional and business services.

Companies were advertising 9.3 job million openings at the end of April, up 12% from the previous month, the department said. The number of vacancies grew most in the accommodation and food-service sectors, which are opening up after more than a year of COVID-19 restrictions.

Vacancies fell in educational services and mining and logging.
