Graduate, The (1967)
The film ponders thoughts of a future that exists against a romantic and sexual adventure. Besides the latin porn movies my parents took me to, this was my second time in a legit movie theatre. My lesbian aunt thought I should be exposed to art. I was embarrassed, though. The film rated higher than my intelligence. I did discover the secrets the adults were hiding and it was fascinating. Dustin Hoffman delivered cool vibes and technical practice. Anne Bancroft's controversial stamp is unmistakable. She was every straight boy's dream and every gay's nightmare. She established the cougar. She was to play Joan in Mommie Dearest but didn't. "What ifs" kept pouncing in my head. If Katherine Ross is nothing like her characters, I will cry. Talks are grown-up, defensive and obligatory. Direction is artistic and historic. 17-Jul-2024
Night Must Fall (1937)
2 ladies living alone in an Oz cottage, on Disney land, invite a Tim Burton forest to bloom in their garden. They are served by two maids. The young maid is bungling, the old maid's had it and the matriarch wants her fired. Her problem is that her boyfriend wont marry her. He can't afford it. Matriarch agrees to talk to him but he charms the diaper out of her, instead. She offers him a job as an invalid's aide and he becomes an inhabitant and protector of bored ladies." Niece is the family loser that never got over her shyness enough, to attract a decent man or a job. She didn't know how to say, "no." Niece and philanderer were hate/love throughout but it didn't deter him from lighting her bulb. Proximity and attraction make sense (unless you're related.) Robert Montgomery was cornfed to pretend and prance like a force. May Whitty was a cranky matriarch that got her life gift a little too late. Power without youth creates hate. She was great. Rosalind Russell glowed as a dork and splintered glass when everything got darker. A murderer has hit the neighborhood and everyone is on high alert. The niece and the scoundrel play a great tennis match. She becomes a Karen that profiles him as a minority suspect and he's making sure that how he insults her, is within his rights. Did he or didn't he is not the question. Montgomery explains to Rosalind that the reason she needs him to be a criminal is because catching him is the last orgasm she's going to have. 02-Jan-2024
Big Sleep, The (1946)
As soon as Humphrey Bogart admitted that he was short he set the design for his character. He was also aware that his magnetism made up for any shortcomings and that he made women swoon. The women he encountered were self-sufficient and magnificent. Hair was at its loveliest, the fashion was fit, make-up was transformative and the ladies acted their asses off. It was a fast paced script that had actors spilling words over each other. The wit was non-stop and I laughed throughout. A private investigator is hired to find out whose blackmailing a man's daughter. Private investigates, flirts with the victim, flirts with her older sister, investigates, had sexy banter with many women, becomes overwhelmed by the mystery and never turns down the character's sadistic rizz. What they didn't do is not as important as what they did. Bogart was masterclass, Bacall made cigarettes sexy, the mystery intrigued and it's cool as fuck. 31-Dec-2023
Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956)
Rocky was a criminal with a violent streak that learned to harness his rage and become a boxing champion. A boxer fights until he is bested and the beast subsides. The story is decisive and instructive. Newman found the soul the tribute demanded. The supporting cast shook like broadway during an earthquake. The show must go on. The fighting was desperate and raw. The soul was accurately apparent and the film strived for perfection. 17-Jul-2023
All Quiet On The Western Front (2022)
The details identified were gratifyingly fresh. The movie is relentless from beginning to end, setting up the dreams of boys as they're woked into becoming men in a war that could have been avoided. The significance that war is not a boys game runs throughout. War creates toxic men and brave soldiers with hell in their dreams. The politics were presented with the right amount of exposure and clarity. I understood it. A great musical score minimizes itself so the story can sing. It sang with an orchestra. Deft hands aplenty and cheers. 21-Jan-2023
Banshees Of Inisherin, The (2022)
A man enters a midlife crises when his bff dumps him for being boring. Since the dumper never explains what's at the heart of the matter we must presume that he is exhausted with his life and is pissing his bff off because he needs someone to pump some protein into it. Colin Farrell is the hopeful dope who has nothing going on except for animals, his sister's company and a daily bar visit with friends. He expresses his disappointment by unraveling himself and the town. It starts as a cute quirk and grows darker and deeper. Friends want reasons why their friends no longer like them. They don't want to hear that they're boring. They want a lie that softens the gut punch. Eyes are focused on Farrell for expressing so many beautiful things. Expansive vistas, smart thinking and continuous motion-causing frustration. The director panned twice away from Colin crying and I was so disappointed. Colin is an adorable cryer. You want to hug him. He's so puppyish. Brendan Gleason can teach his own class. Kerry Condon matched. Barry Keoghan should get a new acting coach. I thought he was making up the accent. I looked it up, its real. That doesn't explain the false glow. 13-Dec-2022
A Doll's House (1973)
A woman moving in with a man must turn the home into a dollhouse in order to make her feel like she owns it. She owns him as much as he thinks he owns her, but a toy is the only home she will ever get to own. The cast played it without pity, the story excelled as it moved, even though status has changed, emotions remain the same and Jane Fonda flexed some beautiful muscles. Freedom comes after you stop lying to yourself. A real Christmas story. 17-Oct-2022
Throne Of Blood (1957)
Kurosawa's imagining of Macbeth was intoxicating. He lingered until we felt the character's desperation. The background was still and intimidating. The actors wore silent film faces with impassioned speak. Toshiro Mifune was a beast royale as MacBeth. Isuzu Yamada was fabulously haunting as his Lady. The rustle of her dress, the scary predictions, the make-up and bouts of violent madness. She was a favorite thing. Deaths were choreographed with coherent math and geography. Inspiration is achieved. Masterpiece recreation is impossible because the best things in it happened by accident. 28-Mar-2022
Humoresque (1946)
Like Batman I focused on a minor detail that should have gotten someone fired and the picture burnt. Ms. Crawford's leg looks beat up. Is it make-up? Is it black nail polish? Did she fall down a flight of stairs? Are those surgery scars? Is that why she's sitting? Was she secretly dirty? It looks awful. 14-Mar-2022
Should you expect payback for endorsing a genius? The film ponders it and applies solutions. John Garfield was born to play broke hot daddies with genius and obsessive compulsions. Joan Crawford always "manned up" to cure them. Ms. Crawford was almost comical until she put on a pair of glasses and blossomed into a bona fide artist. It was classic thespian. The parents' interjection seemed appropriate to the traditions of a hard working family. The family worked to establish a genius and survive. Mama and papa were the mama and papa that lucky children got. Papa looked out while mama cared a lot. Flashbacks were insightful. Ms. Crawford was fashionably tailored to her specifications. The story happens. Oscar Levant was the wisecracking loser that coasted from genius because he failed on his own. He spoke the uncomfortable words the "damned" never listened to because he wasn't "hot." Funny. 04-Mar-2022
Father, The (2020)
We become childlike again with machinations in our heads, dependent on and annoying the people we once cared for and inheriting a worn brain that keeps timing out of a complicated existence. The director assimilates what the disease feels like and with good writing, affords it various scenarios. The actors are masterclass. 28-Jun-2021
Primrose Path (1940)
Tomboy receives her first kiss from a Tractor Daddy and it compels her to dress like a lady (tramp) and stalk him. He doesn't want a woman in his life he wants the shy saucy mouthed little girl he met. They marry, manage a cafe and are adorably happy until a family dinner with her family wrecks it. Tomboy's father is of honored intelligence with no job, lots of drink and no hope for a future. The mother is the ex famous beauty on the hill who gave up her dreams to feed her mother, two daughters, lousy husband and herself. Men with money escort them upstairs while the ladies snatch it. Grandma is a tacky invasion and the youngest is a brat spoiled by presents and groceries only an expert mother can bring. Ginger Rogers is swell proving she can do things herself, Joel McCrea is a giant worth looking up for and every character played to our sympathies. Fuck you, parents! 01-May-2021
Fallen Idol, The (1948)
Ambassador's kid has the run of the mansion and the staff whilst the parents are away. The butler is a hero to the kid because he regales him with stories of how he murdered people in self-defense, allows him treats and spends quality time. Mrs. Butler is a stern enforcer, a mother sub slapper who fries animals and is scary film fun. Butler is having an affair that the child is privy to. The lady is introduced to the boy as the butler's "niece." The three go on outings together. Boy likes niece. Boy is having fun. The boy's slip of the tongue tips Mrs. Butler. She plots. Someone dies. The boy doesn't understand when to lie or tell the truth. The boy's isolation and loneliness happens in big spaces where the adults fuss over him but don't listen to a word he says. Grand camera work boosts everything. It's a trial of a little boy who was fed a pack of lies and whose wrong perception of adult things fucked them all up. 18-Apr-2021
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Mel Brooks' enunciation play is brilliant art. The cast shred with equal parts hilarity and 100% talent. It carouses like a very funny sequel. 10-Mar-2021
Squid And The Whale, The (2005)
Parents with two boys inject a marital separation into their situations. Jeff Daniels is the bitter dad that can't forgive marital indiscretions and uses the separation to win favors with the boys by turning them against their mother. Jeff slices exasperation, vulgarity, intellectual banality and the boredom of an unloved family man into a soul. Laura Linney is the studied wife who will discuss very intimate things with her children without realizing the added pressure she's pushing on them. She wants to live the liberated life that comes from besting her competition (husband) in his writing career and shoving it in his face whilst searching anywhere else for an orgasm. Linney is at her organic best. Jesse Eisenberg is the teen who is not yet a dork, kinda cute but is still creepy. He's on a sexual plight that has been curbed because of his parents' public history. He is the reason for the title and even though he's a dick, his heart sells it. Owen Kline is chilly as the kid masturbating and smearing his cum all over school, calling his dad "assman," telling mom she's ugly, cursing, laying out panties and becoming an alcoholic. Everyone is so busy competing for the other's love that love never comes. A child wants to make a parent proud as much as they want to best them. Anna Paquin is daddy's student who awakens men's desires by being a pixie and writing explicit stories about her vagina. May the best dad or son win. It's frankness felt liberating, the script was witty and smart, it went by too fast and Billy Baldwin whipped his hair back and forth. 25-Oct-2020
Miracle Worker, The (1962)
Wild child with disabilities gets reformed by teacher whose demons compel her to impart self reliance. The film's effectiveness relies on protagonist nerve and muscle. Duke and Bancroft, not only slap it, punch it and break it they receive it, just as well. The psychology was that a child that inflicts pain must undergo it to better understand their crime. All the parental rules we dethroned, helped erect the special intelligence of an unidentified child. At end of story, the combatants celebrate the characters and, I hope, each other for a job well-done.
