Richard Pryor: Omit The Logic (2013)
His upbringing decided what he would become but his art established how we remember him. He admitted his shortcomings, paid a penance and allowed us to think past the laughter. 28-Sep-2018
Love Liza (2002)
The movie never lets up its depressive state. Hoffman digs so deep and personal that its hard to withstand the character he ascribes. He has a mental illness beyond depression and his unwillingness to move forward after tragedy hints that what he mourns was not deserved. Anything eventually would have rendered him dependent and his wife knew that. 20-Jul-2018
Prick Up Your Ears (1987)
Alfred Molina suffocates in gay insecurity and Gary Oldman glides into indulgeness. The film celebrates gay life as much as it warns us about knuckling to its darkest tendencies. 23-Jun-2018
Casualties of War (1989)
The director's presence and personality emblazons an already perplexed account of inhumanity in the midst of war. The shots are as unnerving as they are beautiful. The accents and the oneupmanship are overexerted but when the camera follows Fox and its victim (Thuy Thu Lee,) it allows them to speak hushedly, flatteringly and compassionately. 10-Jun-2018
I tuned in to watch a victorious woman who exceeded tragedy by virtue of loving powerful men and survived them until obtaining power of her own. The film loses its case when the person watching can't digest any of it. The direction spins from comedic parody to morose. I was going to pounce on Portman's Nicole Kidman crossed with Anna Farris accent but the first lady did sound like that. I must commend her on her hard work. 18-Mar-2018
It emphasizes how gullible and unprotected we are when we halt truth until late in life. The trip isn't easy or comfortable and Robin's lingering sadness only intensifies it. Kathy Baker assists beautifully when allowed. 16-Jan-2018
To regard it, you need to evade the details. The accents reverberate inharmoniously, the shade becomes platitude and Blige's sunglasses are a luxury and an unnecessary distraction. Mary is saddled with careful wording and spacing which is the antithesis of what she relays in song. If she would have sung her part she might have let go of her elegance to extract a soul from her character. No player inhabits the complexities of the dimensional but somehow the makers' message punches through. 28-Dec-2017
Madame X (1966)
A woman of leisure receives a lifetime of punishment over one indiscretion. Don't fret over the suds, Lana is intent on frothing the act, the drama and the regret. She is a woman's movement and a mother superior. 28-Dec-2017
Good Neighbor, The (2016)
Scared sweet. 21-Dec-2017
Beautiful discarded youth. The film is neither perky or pretty. Its purpose is to supply oxygen to an ugly truth. You can look away to establish your purpose or look back so you can help fix it. 11-Dec-2017
We party like children, we fuck like it’s historically relevant and we crash in tragedy.
The titillation dissipates as soon as these diverse and brave men lament in a society hellbent on cementing themselves to a merry-go-round that hasn't gotten us anywhere.
They grabbed me. 10-Dec-2017
Birth of a Nation (2015)
The prejudgement was swatted as soon as the harsh reality of what the birth entailed was. The only reason to relive this grave stain in history is to account for a particular untapped event. The film was annihilated by an unproven crime from politically correct assassins but the importance of the film resonates truth.
White man deluded a benevolent slave to learn the bible, adapt their baptist religion (within privileged limitations) and to spread it to his brethren to cause guilt within the black community and to quell the savage soul. The power of the word exalted the white man and placed the black community at their mercy for fear of going to hell. Black preacher gains insight as his community continues to suffer barbarities and sexual perversions from God respecting owners and forms a revolution.
It's a group effort where nothing necessarily stands out except the facts, the inhumanity and the confusion that black people have adopted white man's religion when it was His word that enabled enslavement. 07-Nov-2017
Tuck Everlasting (2002)
It's an intriguing fairy tale whose plot holes unlace some of the magic. 104 year old teenager travels the world but can't achieve maturation or sexual experience and the elders are no wiser living in a childlike bubble.
Alexis Bledel's "forever princess" and Jonathan Jackson's "teenage dream machine" can almost erase the fragmented mythology in assist of quantifiable fairy dust. 13-Oct-2017
Logan ages, is battered and humorless. The actors are aware this is a swan song and they arise and emote beautifully. The fun manifests from mature action and glorious wonderment that only an "R" rating can grant you. The realism in western doesn't allow for the super powered or for a fascinating foe. You'll remain because of fidelity to character and to tip your hat but its pretty depressing. 07-Aug-2017
A Life of Her Own (1950)
Lana's star is on full and uninhibited. The career ascension exceeded the love triangle but Cuckor made "handicap guilt trip" persuasive. The lady chooses her end befittingly. 12-Jul-2017
