Spencer (2021)
Depressing portrait of a princess devoured by gilt-edged politics. Kristen Stewart captures the legend's facade but her inner Diana is caged, whispers a lot, distinguishes her esses and is prone to accelerating her lines so we can't understand what she's saying. CC helped. The film doesn't explore past "she's nuts," "she's sick," "they're all out to get her," and she's getting a bucket of blood dumped on her head. It's haunting to think that we apply greatness to a being with no personal significance. 10-Feb-2022
Being The Ricardos (2021)
I exited before any more of my brain cells died. Not all geniuses are meant to portray geniuses. Nicole doesn't squeak enough or husk enough. She couldn't pick an accent from Lucy's bountiful history to make us believe she was Lucille Ball. Nicole is an Australian model failing as a moll bride. Lucy cracked and she bellowed. Ridiculousness was her class and experience was her wisdom. Nicole understood neither. Javier may be a fuckable specimen on his own accord but Desi wasn't that heavily accented or pitiable. Daddy needed some voodoo guidance. Aaron Sorkin placed the blame on Lucy. Fuck you! 22-Dec-2021
Father, The (2020)
We become childlike again with machinations in our heads, dependent on and annoying the people we once cared for and inheriting a worn brain that keeps timing out of a complicated existence. The director assimilates what the disease feels like and with good writing, affords it various scenarios. The actors are masterclass. 28-Jun-2021
Nomadland (2020)
How to minimize your carbon footprint by living like a dot. Though well portrayed and explored the film only pulled sadness from me. 19-Feb-2021
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)
Ma Rainey was the mother of the blues and a proud lady licker. Talent can overcome oppression and the power to give back to the community. Only a goddess can give credence to a legend. Viola is that piece of art that keeps moving and you chase her because you don't want to miss a thing which makes you see the rips. There were inflections and teeth caps that interrupted but the lady was full-on. Chad Boseman's character needed some vulnerability and a lot less JJ Walker. Colman Domingo was the man. The support beautifully did so. It's a music session in a fabulous woman's life. The theme of the session is to complain about every aspect of black tired life and to take it out on the white man. The conversations were heavy, the atmosphere was confined and there was no lingering happiness. I wanted to see the story of Ma Rainey with Viola smacking pussy and bringing the house down. I don't really know what to feel about this. 22-Dec-2020
Life Ahead, The (2020)
A noble effort that only fortifies its purpose at end. If they had formulated a way to keep the boy's character rebellious with a seeping heart I would have been better invested. The film makes you work for it. Sophia's legend is tasked with being grouchy, tired and sad, just like the film. 16-Nov-2020
Halloween (2018)
Devoid of purpose, study and reverence. The psychology of Laurie Strode was as an empowered victim that elicited strength from catastrophic violence. She's not Sarah Connor and she wouldn't burden a child with her horrid mythology. The holiday wasn't nostalgic and the nods to Hitchcock (who's that?) were extinct. Hallmark movies concoct bigger frights. 08-Feb-2019
Richard Pryor: Omit The Logic (2013)
His upbringing decided what he would become but his art established how we remember him. He admitted his shortcomings, paid a penance and allowed us to think past the laughter. 28-Sep-2018
Love Liza (2002)
The movie never lets up its depressive state. Hoffman digs so deep and personal that its hard to withstand the character he ascribes. He has a mental illness beyond depression and his unwillingness to move forward after tragedy hints that what he mourns was not deserved. Anything eventually would have rendered him dependent and his wife knew that. 20-Jul-2018
Prick Up Your Ears (1987)
Alfred Molina suffocates in gay insecurity and Gary Oldman glides into indulgeness. The film celebrates gay life as much as it warns us about knuckling to its darkest tendencies. 23-Jun-2018
Casualties of War (1989)
The director's presence and personality emblazons an already perplexed account of inhumanity in the midst of war. The shots are as unnerving as they are beautiful. The accents and the oneupmanship are overexerted but when the camera follows Fox and its victim (Thuy Thu Lee,) it allows them to speak hushedly, flatteringly and compassionately. 10-Jun-2018
Jackie (2016)
I tuned in to watch a victorious woman who exceeded tragedy by virtue of loving powerful men and survived them until obtaining power of her own. The film loses its case when the person watching can't digest any of it. The direction spins from comedic parody to morose. I was going to pounce on Portman's Nicole Kidman crossed with Anna Farris accent but the first lady did sound like that. I must commend her on her hard work. 18-Mar-2018
Boulevard (2014)
It emphasizes how gullible and unprotected we are when we halt truth until late in life. The trip isn't easy or comfortable and Robin's lingering sadness only intensifies it. Kathy Baker assists beautifully when allowed. 16-Jan-2018
Mudbound (2017)
To regard it, you need to evade the details. The accents reverberate inharmoniously, the shade becomes platitude and Blige's sunglasses are a luxury and an unnecessary distraction. Mary is saddled with careful wording and spacing which is the antithesis of what she relays in song. If she would have sung her part she might have let go of her elegance to extract a soul from her character. No player inhabits the complexities of the dimensional but somehow the makers' message punches through. 28-Dec-2017
Madame X (1966)
A woman of leisure receives a lifetime of punishment over one indiscretion. Don't fret over the suds, Lana is intent on frothing the act, the drama and the regret. She is a woman's movement and a mother superior. 28-Dec-2017
